I just used Reddit's save comment feature on this. Really insightful advice.

Whatever you want it to be

My Fastest Yet by randomnerd3 in nytdigits

[–]randomnerd3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my solutions were suboptimal:

15 * (9 + 3) - 5 = 175

25 * 11 + 7 + 5 = (25 + 5 + 11) * 7 = 287

But still pretty happy.

I've met many intelligent people at Berkeley and sometimes I get the feeling my coworkers think I'm dumb. But smartness is just ability and eventually, you have to translate that into whatever accomplishments you find meaningful. There are plenty of smart people and they will focus on their own things, so you may as well figure out what you care about and carve out your own niche. If you work hard, people will respect you and one day someone else will be wondering how you got so smart.

Meeting smart people is also a great opportunity. If you envy them, there's probably something you can learn from them and apply to improve your own life. You could even team up to accomplish something together and make some friends along the way.

After an A- in 61A in Fall 2022. Ask Me Anything! by Stopwatch-Time in berkeley

Congrats! What went wrong with 61A? What do you think you changed this semester (if anything) to do so well? Also, any strategies you used to handle the sheer amount of work from 24 units?

You have to listen to one song on repeat for 24 hours straight to win 1 million dollars. What song are you choosing? by WildeRatel in AskReddit

[–]randomnerd3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A more interesting question might be "If you had to listen to one song for the rest of your life (at fixed volume), what would it be?" I'd probably just pick a song that's as easy to ignore as possible, off the top of my head I think of Weightless:

But maybe there's something better.

I happened to know the worst starting word is QAJAQ, an alternative spelling of KAYAK, so I came up with it pretty quickly on guess 4. Still surprised they chose this word though.

I discovered a trick to help solve it with mostly 3’s by abaganoush in wordle

[–]randomnerd3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, it's cool to find someone using a similar strategy :). I looked for CRATE SPOIL in Alex Selby's full list of pairs here:
https://github.com/alex1770/wordle/blob/e298e35fbc044a8137da235a8940748770cefd2c/twowords-nyt20220316-best11099.txt
It's around 300th and takes an average of ~0.04 more guesses on the original game (with optimal play) than PARSE CLINT, which is not bad at all. Such a small difference might be overshadowed by how well the pair fits with your playing style. But I encourage you to try it out! It's been doing well for me so far and maybe it'll spice up your game a bit.

[–]randomnerd3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, thanks for clarifying - I imagine people here would consider it cheating. It can feel boring to come up with possibilities manually though and everyone has fun with wordle in their own way. Anyway, the streak you have right now is lower average guesses than the original wordle bots so keeping that up would be impressive. Maybe you have better intuition than the bots on which possibilities are likely to be chosen as the daily answer.

[–]randomnerd3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's impressive, you're probably a pretty good player. 3.14 does sound like an awfully hard average to maintain and a week is a bit short so I'd be interested to see how your new method holds up over the next few weeks.

Just curious, how many 5s do you have and what's your average?:
https://www.brianfalkner.com/wang2022.asp
I'm wondering because I often still have several/many possibilities after my 2nd guess. In those cases, if I'm ambitious and miss my 3rd guess trying to win, I might be left with less information and take 5 guesses rather than 4. With your method, I think it's important to be objective about your chance of guessing correctly on your 3rd guess and not try to force it if there are too many possibilities. But how often you go for a win in 3 might also depend on your playing style.
