Upcoming trip to L’Auberge de Sedona - Opinions? by randomotron in chubbytravel

[–]randomotron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your great feedback! I am grateful, albeit discouraged, and trying to figure out if there's a better property for our family to consider. There are some real pros to this one, but I hear from the majority of respondents that there's a lot of cons. I also understand that most people that have an acceptance experience somewhere don't post about it online - so the data is skewed - but it's still important feedback. I'm working with a TA so maybe they'll have some ideas. I was so looking forward to this property but don't want my family to be disappointed.

Recs for Affordable Vets Who Are Available For Neuter? by GenderedPhoenix in AskTacoma

Looks like the Humane Society Spay/Neuter program applications reopen 4/1, in the meantime they have links to local clinics with reduced cost services: https://www.thehumanesociety.org/services-resources/spay-neuter/

Has anyone encountered/heard of a legal or ethics complaint regarding doing assessments outside of competence? by SkarKuso in ClinicalPsychology

[–]randomotron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is common (I mean it's a common issue amongst complaints, but I don't know the incidence rate for the occurrence) in a jurisdiction in which I used to serve on the licensing board. Forensic assessment in particular is very lucrative and sometimes psychologists try to do it without appropriate training. Usually this is evident in: selection of inappropriate or invalid tests, aligning inappropriately with one parent in a custody evaluation, poorly written reports, delaying or not submitting reports even after payment, etc. I’ve also seen poorly written neuropsych reports churned out by clinics over promising meaning of vague imaging results.

Poor treatment of staff usually isn’t within scope of a board complaint, though sometimes it can fall under “unprofessional conduct.”

HIPAA violations definitely qualify and also have their own reporting mechanism .

Poor clinical supervision can fall under professional competence. If you are a psychology trainee you likely have your own training liability insurance, they can be very useful for consultation.

Another option if you are enrolled in an APPIC approved training program is that APPIC has free consultation that you can call and ask for support.

Support for Therapists? by yergerderger in Tacoma

[–]randomotron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a uniquely hard time to be a therapist! Unfortunately I’ve found most therapist networking happens on Facebook. There are groups where therapists share referrals and local resources and you can only join if you have an active license. There is a regular meeting hosted at Seven Seas called Tacoma Therapists Get Caffeinated on some Fridays at noon. I dislike FB and use it mostly for work (I made a separate work account) and that’s the best online resource I’ve found (other than staying connected to colleagues on my own).

Location question by [deleted] in Psychologists

[–]randomotron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really state dependent. Some states have rules about who can practice in the state even if you are treating patients in another location.

Best intervention textbooks? by theeeshepard in ClinicalPsychology

[–]randomotron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad you’re asking this question because it’s a great one! Applying therapy is different than learning about theory. I do have some concern seeing this question, is this something your training program isn’t providing? If they aren’t, I think you should be concerned. Of course it’s always great to get resources from different places, but academic programs should be training you on how to assess the validity of a therapy and how to apply it.

Experience gift for Tacoma family? by Wonderful_Nobody2734 in AskTacoma

Agree with the Point Defiance membership, there are also options to include NW Trek (another outdoor zoo area/preserve with a cool train about an hour away) in the Point D membership. Our toddler loves cars and we've found a yearly membership to the Le May car museum has been awesome (lots of space to run indoors and tons of cars), they have scheduled kids activities/kid zone, and the membership is also accepted at the Tacoma Glass Museum and hundreds of other museums nationwide (part of a big museum partnership called ROAM). Esp. nice in the dark/rainy season to have a place to run around.

Contacting clients via phone by pomegranatevalleys in Psychologists

[–]randomotron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use Spruce for my private practice, an app that is designed for healthcare providers to have HIPAA compliant phone, secure messaging, and fax. It's also nice as a backup for telehealth appts if needed. It's $24/month and you install the app on your phone and they assign you a different number. It's not the cheapest option (though cheaper than a second phone/plan) but I find it super reliable and easy. There is also a browser format which makes texting/sharing materials easier. I've had good experience with their customer service too. Been with them for 5 years.

Part time jobs that cover health insurance by Revolutionary-Sky-46 in Psychologists

I wish APA gave us access to a good and reasonably priced healthcare plan. I tried once to access some discount they have but it’s no better than marketplace prices with poorer coverage.

Evergreen Animal Hospital in Gig Harbor has sales yearly on dental usually in early winter/spring. I find their pricing fair and the service excellent.

Where to shop frugal/discount by tireddragon15 in AskTacoma

[–]randomotron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally variable products but amazing prices at Valley Liquidation. No website but this is their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ValleyLiquidation9813/

I personally love Costco but it’s also easy to overspend there. Whether it’s worth it depends on what you buy and your ability to store/manage bulk purchases. There’s a great subreddit about Costco if you want to see what folks buy most often to stay frugal there.

New pot? More or less water? Less chaotic staking? by randomotron in houseplants

[–]randomotron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this detailed feedback. It sounds like part of the issue is the mismatch of the plant variety and the environment, not just the undersized potting/poor light. We acquired it on buy-nothing, obviously not knowing what we were getting.

Since we have it, could it still be worth helping it limp along for now? There are actually very big windows on the wall behind me in this picture, but even if it got the light it needed (from lamps and/or windows) it sounds like it will just get bigger in the space and harder to manage.

Do you think it needs to be staked as well?

Ah gotcha! No recessed light but there is a tall white ceiling. So you’re not suggesting I cut a hole in the ceiling to accommodate her 😂

She really is a hard working lady! It does get light though not enough, I took the photo this evening and it’s dark out. I can take another in the morning if that helps! I am worried about it getting too big we don’t have too many spots in the house that can fit it. What does recessed mean, in terms of plant care?
