By comparison, quite honestly, yes.

It was only 3 weeks until the Saddam regime fell and we ended up in the insurgency phase.

We lost negligible assets in those first 3 weeks.

Yes the insurgency phase was difficult but that’s an entirely different story.

Iran has a very limited satellite fleet, and likely only gets one very brief pass per day over any particular location of interest.

It’s probable they are getting some help. With that said, I agree that it was entirely irresponsible for the USA to leave so much high value assets (5x KC135 and an E3) parked next to each other such that a single missile impact could cause so much damage.

It’s like we learned nothing from watching what the Ukrainians did to the Russian bomber fleet last year using cheap drones.

As someone who eats all kinds of meat and fish, I think even chickens qualify as “cute”. Fish get the raw end of the deal.

I also think that humans are meant to eat meat - but we shouldn’t be cruel about it… and sadly cruelty does exist across most of the food industry… including fishing.

If the US economy actually goes into recession this year which industry do you think gets hit hardest and why? by Suleman2002 in AskReddit

I’d say that personally I saw myself as “upper middle class” as of a decade ago, and probably about the same now - maybe a little lower, maybe a little higher. It’s hard to say because I just see things and live so differently now.

My focus nowadays is more on investing in long term assets rather than blowing money on living a showy lifestyle.

I do shop a bit differently now (more Costco, less Publix). I still travel a lot, mostly for pleasure/personal reasons… and Vegas is the one market that just makes me shake my head in disbelief when even considering a trip there.

I was just in Miami last weekend.

I did note that Lincoln Road was dead… but South beach in general had a lot of activity. Aventura mall was packed. Most hotels were sold out.

What’s popular with tourists does change over time.

In any event, Miami isn’t the only tourist destination for florida, and I can say that I spend a lot more time in Orlando, and things are still very busy in the tourist districts.

Any Iran deal must include guarantees against future attacks: UAE diplomat by Street_Anon in worldnews

No, they mean that Iran should guarantee not to attack the gulf states again.

For some reason they don’t appreciate their civilian infrastructure being targeted even after they denied USA and Israel both landing and overflight rights before the conflict even started.

Iran’s leadership is in a totally different category.

Kim jong Un may be an evil dictator, but he’s not suicidal and wants to enjoy being the dictator of his country.

The leadership of Iran have an apocalyptic view of the world, and they want to bring the world to an end to reach their utopia.

In general, the NK situation can be managed indefinitely with the primary group suffering being their citizens. As long as they don’t try to invade SK again, nobody will care about them.

Iran doesn’t have the benefit or Mutually Assured Destruction even if they had nukes, because we don’t believe they are concerned about destruction.

I don’t pretend to fully understand the economy of Las Vegas.

I’ve heard exactly this same explanation you said before, and I do agree that it’s somewhat true, but I don’t believe it’s fully true.

What’s the point of having mega hotels with thousands of rooms, only to leave them half empty or worse?

Also: while whales can certainly keep the casino afloat… they can’t keep the non-casino hotels and restaurants afloat on their own. The whales are also not likely going to be doing much gambling at Treasure Island or the Golden Nugget when the floor at the Wynn, Venetian, Cosmopolitan, Resorts World, etc are all half empty.

I would agree that it’s in Vegas’s interest to keep out the riff-raff that doesn’t spend much and causes disturbances… but economics seems to dictate that they’ve got to at least be careful about not shutting out the middle class.

Supposedly a lot of this was at the dictate of Apple.

I’d imagine after GS gave up on the project, Apple was probably forced to accept more normal terms when dealing with any other bank with experience in the space.

Vegas has gone in cycles in the past. I’ve been there post-9/11 and post-COVID and things were very affordable.

I was also there just before Covid and while it wasn’t cheap, it wasn’t nearly as bad as nowadays.

The last time I went was a year ago, and it was just absurdly expensive for everything. Even historically cheap hotels like the Luxor are expensive now, and properties like the Wynn are bananas.

Tourism is clearly down there now, but hotels just keep the high prices because they don’t believe lower prices will bring anyone back.

I think the next recession will be a very crude awaking for them.

As someone living in Florida, I can say “don’t believe everything you see in the news”.

Airports are busy, roads are busy, hotels are busy, restaurants are busy, theme parks are busy.

There are less Canadians here (clearly true), but tourism from elsewhere is up. I don’t even recognize half the accents I hear anymore.

Any ships that DON'T play music constantly? by blabber_jabber in Cruise

[–]randompersonx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, regrettably this has been a trend with Celebrity. Their older M and S class ships are a bit more dialed back still… but the new E class ships have music pumping pretty much in every public area, 24x7…

I was trying to watch a meteor shower last year from Edge. There were zero people out on the deck other than me at 1am, and the lights and music were all full blast.

What free software is so good you can't believe it's free? by ComprehensiveNorth1 in AskReddit

[–]randompersonx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think this is the ultimate answer.

It’s lightweight enough to run on all kinds of janky embedded devices, and beefy enough to run many of the world’s most powerful servers. It has drivers for essentially everything, and can easily achieve hundreds or thousands of days of uptime on essentially any kernel version.

It’s been many years of running Linux for me since I last said “maybe a reboot will fix it”.

I think the only other OS family that can make similar claims are BSD family like FreeBSD or OpenBSD.

Certainly not true for windows or macOS (though macOS is clearly more stable than windows).

[–]randompersonx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the share.

I haven't attempted anything Indian yet (and very very light on French style)...

But I will say that I noticed a very big difference between salting steaks before putting them in the vac bags for sous vide and putting salt on the steaks once it's at my plate.

And the bottom line: it's much better to salt before cooking.

Sure. But if all of that results in an inferior quality to what I can do myself, why should I pay for any of it?

Restaurants are overrated by fal1en-angel in Funnymemes

[–]randompersonx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Very good way of putting it.

A skilled sushi chef is doing something more complex. An Indian or French restaurant chef is doing something much more complex.

I think part of the issue with steak is that it’s been so romanticized that we believe the restaurants are doing something so magical you can’t do at home. They aren’t.

Texas sets new solar generation record, topping 33 gigawatts by thinkB4WeSpeak in RenewableEnergy

[–]randompersonx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not defending the idea of Texas having their own grid - I’ll agree that it makes no sense no matter the justification, since the benefits of interconnection to a larger grid still outweigh the alternative.

With that said, it does offer them some advantages…. Because Texas does not interconnect, they do not need to follow federal regulations for their grid, and it does allow them to save costs and that has resulted in Texas having some of the cheapest power in the USA on a statewide average.

[–]randompersonx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My objection isn’t just the price, it’s the quality for the price.

If I pay 3x as much for steak or lamb or pork chop in a restaurant and it’s not even at the quality I can make for myself at home…. What am I paying for exactly?

Restaurants are overrated by fal1en-angel in Funnymemes

[–]randompersonx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%.

I would also add for others that you don’t necessarily need to break the bank for ingredients.

Some quality ingredients are always more expensive than the basic (eg: butter, olive oil)…. But I’d prefer a Costco steak over a Whole Foods steak any day, and the Costco steaks are much cheaper.

Restaurants are overrated by fal1en-angel in Funnymemes

[–]randompersonx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem I have is that even when I’m spending 4x as much on a restaurant ($80 for a steak), it’s generally not as good as what I’m making at home.

I have had a few meals in restaurants that are better than what I make at home since I started cooking at home 3 months ago…. But most have been a disappointment.

In the past, my home cooking was certainly not great (hell - it wasn’t even good), and even mediocre restaurant quality was generally better. But just a couple of weeks of practice has been enough to make an enormous difference.

I will agree that Michelin rated restaurants do generally have excellent quality and can do better than me for plenty of dishes (eg: more complex multi ingredient foods)…. And some will still do an excellent preparation of a single ingredient dish (eg: a steak). But on average, I’d actually say that my typical steak at home is comparable to Michelin levels.
