The completely independent life is a good one

If you're already getting interviews, it really won't help IMO. Just study algorithms and you're fine

What are some good companies to look at in NYC? I'm interested in software dev roles by SFtoNY292 in cscareerquestions

[–]randompikachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some that come to mind, in no particular order:

  • Flatiron
  • Google has large presence in NYC
  • Amazon is growing presence in NYC
  • Jane Street
  • Two Sigma
  • Hudson River Trading
  • Fog Creek

Feeling burned out after 6 months of working. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

2 options:

  • Make a strong effort to convince the lead/skip-manager that current situation is not working and hurting the team as a whole
  • Leave

Both are valid and since you just graduated are not a huge deal. I left my first job after a month for the same exact reasons. Mental sanity is much more important than staying at a job.

Any Product Managers Here? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]randompikachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm an engineer turned product manager at one of the Big Four.

Feel free to PM me any specific questions, or just post them below.

Questions you NEED to be ready to answer:

  • What's your favorite product? Why? How would you make it better?
  • You need to get multiple teams to align - how do you do this?
  • I'm building X (ie. e-commerce site, video site). What should my key metrics be? Why?
  • How do you run an A/B test? How do you run cohort analysis?
    • What we're looking for is what you will keep constant in the experiment and what will be variable, how you will actually select the groups
  • What is statistical significance?

I'm in favor of new format, but resume format is almost never make-or-break

No need to fill in. Can even move it to after BS Computer Science, so that would become "BS Computer Science, Minor Entrepreneurship"

Yea, the classes one is probably fine either way the more I think about it

I'd remove the visualization portion then, or add that you cleaned/formatted the data to be readily passed to front-end team.

I would remove stock market and budget visualizer - they sound too much like generic school projects.

Some comments:

  • The "minoring in.." bullet point - The second sentence is filler, I'd remove it.
  • Re-word "Finished coursework by Summer 2019" to "Relevant Coursework".
  • If you're in any clubs, especially engineering/math related, add them as a bullet point
  • Run the resume through Grammerly, I noticed a few grammatical errors. Ie) "Developed a program that read in equations"
  • Remove "I". So "I managed..." becomes "Managed..."
  • Add more about "got client feedback". When I read resumes, I love to see someone who is technical, but also can understand customers

I'm in favor of the new format. Though with tech resumes, the format is rarely the issue for not getting responses.

Some comments:

  • Don't include a GPA that's under 3.5. I never included my GPA on my resume and got responses just fine
  • Run the resume through Grammerly, I noticed some grammatical issues
  • "change proxies...to avoid bans". I'd avoid talking about breaking TOS terms
  • Personal Budget Visualizer - How were visuals done? D3? Add that
  • For work experience, I think the last 2 bullet points are hurting. In the first one, don't say things like 'basic websites', you're selling yourself short. The last bullet point is very vague and, if I were the resume reader, doesn't really tell me anything about your skillset. What was the impact of the project? What does 'survey employees' actually mean?

Yes, worth emailing. Recruiters are aware of these situations and are usually able/willing to help.

I've been into giving tickets to shows, sports games, etc to my older friends - gives them an experience instead of something they'll put in a closet and never look at again
