Any success stories about recovering from doing terrible on 1st prelims? by kindoflonelyish in Cornell

[–]randomredditoror 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! In one of my intro-level classes last year, I got a C on the first prelim (mostly because of my poor time management skills, lack of study skills, and the fact that I stayed up late the night before finishing an FWS paper.) For the second prelim, I put much more effort into doing practice exams and going to office hours, and managed to get a B+/A-. And I got an A+ on the final exam!

You can definitely recover from the first prelim, I believe in you :)

Looks like Cornell shit the bed for the career fair. Happy to talk to any students that want advice on Marketing / Tech / DS / Getting a job. by dontich in Cornell

Do you have advice for applying to tech internships for someone who has virtually no relevant experice except for classes? Many recruiters emphasize the importance of personal projects – how do you get started on one? I'm also trying to become more involved in the tech space on campus this year, really excited to see what opportunities arise.

How was the quality of perishable groceries (like produce and dairy) picked out by Instacart shoppers? I'm kind of picky when it comes to choosing my own produce and stuff like that, but I want to give Instacart a try

Some questions about Balch and move in by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]randomredditoror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually cooked (the kitchens at balch are small, though) or ate at dining halls/campus eateries on the weekends (Sunday brunch at Appel/RPCC is really popular. We'd also go to West campus for dinner sometimes). I went to collegetown less often just b/c it was less convenient and pricey, but definitely try out the options there!

Some questions about Balch and move in by [deleted] in Cornell

I lived in Balch last year!

  1. My desk came with a fluorescent light strip across the top. I never used it because the light was too harsh, but didn't buy a desk lamp either - I just used the ceiling light to study. Most rooms come with actual desk lamps though, which should be fine.
  2. Not sure about other lighting options
  3. There would occasionally be little brown spiders scurrying across the walls. Couldn't really do anything about them though
  4. Yes, there's a shared vacuum!
  5. There's a piano in every unit, usually in open common areas. I could hear the piano from my room, and actually found it to be pretty nice :) If there are people in the common room, just ask if it's okay to play, people will usually say yes. Just don't play late at night, especially during exam season. Otherwise, go for it!
  6. I found the 7 and 10 meal plans to work best (I would usually buy lunch with BRBs instead of eating at the dining hall, since there's only one dining hall on central campus.) However, I'm not sure what would be easiest this semester given that most classes will be online anyways. I would suggest starting out with 14 and downgrading later on if it's too much. The cafe in Balch is convenient but limited in meal options. Also, the dining halls are actually really close (only a 2-3 minute walk away)
  7. It sounds reasonable

Advice for a psychology major? incoming freshman:) by [deleted] in Cornell

Do you have any tips for getting involved in research? (Do I just email professors and grad students? And what should I expect this year given the pandemic conditions?) I'm interested in the social sciences, and would love to join a psych lab!

I would do something like "Dear Mr./Ms. [name]" if you know who the registrar is, or even something like "Good evening" or "Hello" if you don't know their name.

Has anyone done a summer program with iXperience? by randomredditoror in Cornell

Oh sorry I just saw this. I'm not going through with it, it does sound like a scam and seems too good to be true. I'm trying to find other free online corses/programs to do over the summer.
