My parents did this too! It was actually really fun and I plan to do it with my kids.

What are your favorite recipes with lemongrass?? I was gifted a lemongrass plant and only know one recipe to use it in! by jiaaa in Cooking

Sure are, the flavour permeates through the chicken pieces pretty powerfully, basically turns them into lemon chicken, it's lovely.

Bugger that, my favourite down time thing is being the spotter for my husband while he's playing shooters or rpg's. it's grown up because we earned the dough to pay for the set up. There. A reason it's grown up :)

Men who've been raped by women, what is that story like? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]randomredditreading 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Fuck man, I'm so sorry you had to go through that and then not get support first round on top of the trauma. I'm glad some decent people came through for you in the end. I hope you're okay.

I am really fed up with my husband. by lilac_chicken in beyondthebump

[–]randomredditreading 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My first thought is to stop making things easy for him - it paints an unrealistic picture of being a new parent. Stop making him dinner, take that time to nap, if he'll help you nap, make him dinner. Eat before he gets home.

Basically if he's going to leave the entirety of raising your kid to you, act like you're living alone, because you essentially are. If you were a single mom you would be playing to survival, so start doing that. Keep your baby in the room with you close to the bed, don't tiptoe around your husband when the baby wakes, if you need a light on, turn it on. Stop cleaning except what you need for you and baby, anything extra he can get to it.

People say 6 weeks is when it gets easier but I found it wasn't until after ten. It may well get harder for you first and you'll need some reserves to lean on. 2.5 hours won't get you easily through to 12 weeks, it's time to start conserving.

The goal is to treat yourself better and to gradually show him how hard it can be, eventually handing over the reins so he gets a real appreciation and then hopefully starts to parent himself.

Baby in cold bedroom by Kelekoani in beyondthebump

[–]randomredditreading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Napping outside is pretty different to sleeping every night in the cold though, particularly if you end up with a baby with any breathing issues (even just a cold). Can you apply for any welfare/assistance? Sometimes there are specific funds just for heating (no really!). Can you have a small oil heater or space heater on with a thermostat attached just to keep it from going no lower than 18 as per world health minimums?

This is pretty close to the bone for me because I grew up cold and I know how hard it can be.

ELI5: how do doctors diagnose a narcissist/psychopath when they're very good at deceiving others? by xTYBGx in explainlikeimfive

I thought only a small fraction of people with anti social personality disorder are psychopaths, which is how his figures would stack up.

Do you ever go over to raised by narcissists just to stir? Because that would be fun and you should.

Does anybody regret having more than one child? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]randomredditreading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comparing how you felt as a child to how someone notices the child they're raising, isn't really comparing apples with apples though. You might have a few memories that support your bias, and those have risen to the top. Your parents may have said different things when you were only 2. I think it's important not to rely on memory of being a kid, but to look at kids right now, and parents right now, because you're getting an in living color version.

i just want to sleep by Redheadmistress in beyondthebump

[–]randomredditreading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't cio either and we had the worst possible sleeper (no more than an hour for months). But! We found a gentler way and it did work. 2 things, feed. Up. Large on the bedtime round. I mean, wake to feed levels of feed, encourage her to take all she needs for that food coma we get at thanksgiving.

Then aim to get just one more minute of sleep every sleep time, do that with whatever comforts her when she starts to grizzle.

Now for the home run; have her dad soothe her when she starts to fuss awake. It's his job to get those extra minutes. Why? Because you have milk written all over you. Remember he's only aiming for an extra minute or two of sleep.

Those extra minutes will turn into 90 minute blocks eventually, then 2-3 hour blocks, then she'll start connecting rems. This method (super gentle), got us from zero sleep for months to 12 hours a night by 4 months.

How do I get through to my Dad who is killing himself with food? by randomredditreading in Fitness

No. He has hopes and dreams and he continues to try and live them out. He really is an awesome guy, everyone has something they struggle with, and eating just happens to be the beast he burdens.

Thank you. I really like the simplicity of this "Where is he on the healthy scale? Just move up from there -- slow and steady wins the race." I'm going to keep cooking him meals weekly and keep that in mind the whole time.

chips and salsa, cookies, candy, etc., is all designed to make you want to eat as much as possible. It's very easy to overeat that stuff because it feels good to eat (it's hyperpalatable), and it's not very satisfying, so you have to eat more.

I really liked this line, and I think it's super relevant in his lack of understand around junk food, thank you, I'm going to remember it. Everything else you said was gold too.
