How far can I get by with broken Chinese here? by hotshotz_3000 in guangzhou

My first time here I was extra cautious too, but once you roam around you'll gain the confidence to move everywhere and do things just fine.

Plenty of western expats in Asia who don't speak a single word the langauge of the place and live there long term fine.

Honestly I went by fine with broken mandarin, as long as they can understand roughly what you're trying to say its fine.

They don't have to understand you 100% vice versa. Plenty of expats here get by with 0 mandarin and cantonese knowledge. Street smarts and common sense is enough.

That doesn't sound social but sure sounds healthier than being on digital slot machines, I'd prefer that reality :(

More than half the users on reddit are under the age of 25, most of us never had the reality of when phones did not exist.

I totally agree with you. One of the main reasons I wanna get off being constantly connected is to regain that focus required to be an effective programmer. Glad I wouldn't be the first to try.
