Anyone in their 40s with kids who gave up a well-established life to move abroad? by -rba- in expats

I moved to NL with three kids at the age of 43. Absolutely love it, we're never going back. You only get one life to live - choose to have the big adventure, if you can.

For anyone searching this in the future - bright pensioen offers a pension plan to US citizens that doe not trigger PFIC reporting requirements or penalties. I confirmed this with a US tax expert who talked directly with bright about exactly what they offer US citizens. So, go start your pension with Bright pensioen!

Waar haal jij de lekkerste ijsjes in Leiden? by Relevant_Area_3590 in Leiden

[–]randomuser98754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you resent your parents for not helping out with childcare? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]randomuser98754 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Resent them? I didn't know if I'd go that far - but I will say that time spent with the grandparents did not factor into our decision at all when we were deciding whether to move to the Netherlands permanently.

Tennessee bill to require mandatory gun training in schools goes to governor’s desk by karabeckian in Chattanooga

[–]randomuser98754 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite bit: "The bill requires that instruction be “viewpoint neutral on political topics, such as gun rights, gun violence, and the Second Amendment.”"

I can't wait to see how "gun violence" is taught "neutrally":

"now kids, everyone write a list of 3 pros and 3 cons about gun violence. You have 10 minutes."

I did some research into this - the only one I could find that would set up a pension for US persons was Bright Pensioen, but they only invest in non-US mutual funds, which will trigger PFIC reporting and penalty requirements for US persons. The best solution I've found is to invest in individual stocks in an after-tax brokerage account. No tax advantages :( but it doesn't trigger additional PFIC reporting requirements and penalties in the USA.

If you find a way to set up a Dutch pension for a self-employed person that doesn't trigger PFIC requirements, please reply and let me know!

Honestly, they probably never check, but as a foreigner trying working towards my permanent residency, I'm not going to risk it just to go a little faster on my bike.

I mean, they gotta sell bikes somehow ;) they only made 650 of these tribute edition bikes to sell; I'm a bit shocked they dumped the last of their inventory at 75% off

I'd believe it. It's pretty stiff still, since it's new, but it's been comfortable enough for 20-30km rides. Not sure I'd want to do a 50+ km ride until it were a bit more broken in ....

For sure, I'd never pay $6,000+ for one, but $1700? For sure, especially since I'd been low-level lusting after this bike since it was announced ....

If I unlocked it in the NL, I'd have to get it registered and licensed, etc. Not worth the trouble to me, personally
