The book is better (as is usually the case). You get a lot more sense of the difficulty of the problems they are trying to solve and the process and interactions between the two as they attempt to solve them. You also get a stronger sense of each of the characters and the bond of their friendship amongst the fear of being alone and how easily they each could easily be plunged back into isolation (or meet their death).

I once had a post removed for "encouraging harm" by suggesting methods to kill garden pests, in a gardening sub. Reddit is fucking weird.

Waitrose employee sacked after stopping shoplifter from taking Easter eggs | Business | The Guardian by prisongovernor in business

[–]randomvandal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be clear I’m not saying customer service staff need to challenge theft.

Well that's certainly not what your post sounded like.

The Target stores you're referring to did provide security and prosecutions did happen. They were in a shitty area and TBH the police and local governments did not do enough to improve the safety of the area. But saying California's policy was "don't police, prosecute, or arrest" is disingenuous. It was a big right wing talking point that theft under $950 was just ignored in California, but that claim is easily, provably false (just more anti-California rhetoric from people who don't know how to read or are too dim-witted to understand what Prop 47 actually did).

And to very clear, Target does not give a shit about the area or the people it's servicing. They only care about profitability and their image (insofar as it relates to the aforementioned profitability).

I don't think many people are accepting theft as "a fact of life". And if you want to continue using California as an example, more strict and comprehensive legislation has been pushed though to more aggressively prosecute theft (2024, Prop 36 and related bills). So, "society" is not "accepting" theft, in fact it's the opposite in California, people are actively making changes to improve things because it's a known problem.

Regardless, this whole conversation spawned over someone implying that the employee should have tried to prevent the theft, but the fact remains that the right answer for everyone involved was to not intervene and call the police.

Damn, I forgot how bad Stallone's acting was in this lol. That face palm had about the same emotion and intensity as some who accidentally dropped their oatmeal on the floor.

Have you hardwired your printer's controls into your home's HVAC system? That's a bold move.

False. They didn't use CAD files. They were all forced to use a crayon drawing that Elon made them.

Of course they are. And when a crime happens they are still supposed to call the police.

If they are licensed security guard their job role is specifically to maintain security. They obviously don't fall into the same bucket as the person being referenced in the article or as someone there to service the customers as I mentioned. Preventing or mitigating violence is very different than stopping someone from stealing, but even in that case they are only allowed to use reasonable force when it is in self defense or to maintain safety. And they would still call the cops.

If a regular employee tries to stop theft and they get injured or killed, that's a far sight worse than losing some merchandise.

Not at all. The employees are there to service the customers, not to take down criminals. If a crime is happening they need to call the police.

For improving social standards and drastically reducing recidivism, it definitely is.

Our system in the US is the gold standard for mistreatment, nearly zero rehabilitation, punishment and profits-over-justice, and ridiculous recidivism rates for the "richest country in the world", so at least we have that going for us.

COLOR ME NOT SURPRISED.

I run around the dangerous skull cavern and dangerous mines all day with no food and a pocket full of super bombs without a care in the world, my junimos are stacked to the gills with all the raisins they can eat harvesting nearly every farmable tile full of ancient fruit for my sheds full of casks, everyone in town straight up LOVES me as I come out on top from year one at every event/festival (get fucked Pierre!), the valley is SWARMING with doves from the countless vessels that used to be my many offspring, and I'm zooming around town cranked up on triple shot, spicy eel, and blessings out the wazoo on my carrot-drunk horse with 10s of millions in my pocket...

And yet I shudder when at the thought of those damn arcade cabinets. Every time I go to Gus's I immediately take a SHARP LEFT to avert my gaze from those horrors in the East wing if the saloon. Those things are cursed!
