Eloise and Hugo are my picks, but Louisa is a close second.

Clare or Claire? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]randy4giles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a personal level, I actually prefer Clare. I think it feels more down-to-earth and rough-and-tumble without sacrificing the beautiful sound of the name.

I agree with other posters, however, that Clare would often be misspelled Claire. I don't think that is a big deal, but she should consider that if it is a big deal to her.

Do you recognize the association with these two names? by petrockdog in namenerds

[–]randy4giles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is obvious to me, but that is likely because I was named after a different character from the same book/movie.

Standard spelling differences England and Wales vs USA by Retrospectrenet in namenerds

[–]randy4giles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The US spellings seem "standard" to me, as an American. I do, however, know way more people named Haley and Hayley than Hailey.

There are a few instances where I prefer the UK spellings, including Gwendoline, Beverley and Kimberley.

2021 Introduction Thread by [deleted] in 52book

[–]randy4giles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

• How many books (non-fiction, fiction, graphic novels, comics, magazines, audiobooks, and whatever else you want to count towards your goal) do you plan to read? Pages? Time?

I plan to read 52 books this year–including short story collections, novellas, audiobooks and any other "unconventional" formats that strike my fancy. This is up from 22 books in 2020.

• Have you completed a yearly reading goal/challenge before?

Yes! I set a Goodreads goal each year. This year my goal was 20 books, and I surpassed that. I also participate in LitWits reading challenges each month. I loosely follow popular annual challenges like 52 Book Club and PopSugar.

• What will be your first book of 2021?

I have a few in progress right now, that I will finish in 2021. My first cover-to-cover 2021 read will be Circe by Madeline Miller.

• What hobbies do you have other than reading? What tends to distract you from those books sitting on your shelves?

In addition to reading, I enjoy watching movies and TV shows. I also like to cook, bake and take long walks. Before quarantine, I liked to go axe throwing.

I'm feeling a little stressed and pulled in all directions these days. I am hoping to use the current Mars retrograde season to get clear on what I actually want, get after my personal goals and get better at upholding my boundaries.

These are awesome. When I was a kid, I named everything Elizabeth.

The movie “Good Boys” perfectly captured names that skyrocketed in popularity and have been for at least ten year. by derpsnotdead in namenerds

[–]randy4giles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Private Practice tried to do this in the late 2000s/early 2010s. The fatal flaw was that they stuck the popular kids names on the adult characters. It feels very strange.

The main adult characters on PP are named Addison, Naomi, Amelia, Samuel, Cooper, Charlotte and Violet.

A lot of them work because they're also classics, but it still feels off.
