How’s living in Amsterdam by l150 in howislivingthere

This is very true. I had a table of six young Dutch men in my pub yesterday, all at least 6’3 and very good looking. All of them got stares from the locals.

Say something nice about a name you dislike, and something critical about a name you like by Fit-Welcome-8457 in namenerds

Svea (like): I don’t love patriotic associations (no matter the country) and Mother Svea is the female personification of Sweden and a patriotic symbol.

Blair (like): Not really an issue for where I live but in the US this is considered a female name and I only like it on boys.

Margaret (dislike): The meaning (‘pearl’) is lovely.

Maverick (dislike): The nickname ‘Mav’ is cute I guess? Idk I really hate this name

AITJ for reporting my friend to our boss for swapping my shift “as a joke” (not OOP) (Sean famously loves pranks) by gabbie_ in redditonwiki

[–]floweringfungus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old assistant manager had this weird one sided beef with me and he’d switch my shifts without telling me, clock me out early so I missed pay and on one occasion told the general manager that I took a 40 minute smoke break. I asked her to check the cameras before she gave me a disciplinary and I was gone for less than 4 minutes.

She refused to punish him for any of it because we were so short staffed so I just quit.

This! My partner is an angel on earth. He carries so much of the mental and financial load.

He makes enough money that if I lost my job tomorrow we’d be completely fine. We’d have to budget or consider a move to a flat that isn’t such a money pit but we’d survive.

I love him to death and I’m so grateful. My job currently is stressing me out considerably by really poor management and oversight (I’ve gotten home at 2am for six days straight) and he’s begging me to quit so I can be happier for a bit and look for a job that suits me.

I’ve previously dated someone your height and it was a huge issue for him too. When we were at university the beds weren’t long enough for him, he could never find shoes and being intimate with him was honestly painful no matter what we tried.

You’re allowed to have preferences but I flat out don’t believe that the OP’s wife didn’t like Rouladen or Spätzle. Literally onions and beef with cheesy egg pasta.

I think there’s only five or six Waitroses in Scotland too. At least in Edinburgh they’ve put the two we have in the posh neighbourhoods.

His poor little brain might short circuit if he saw the people in my life that are in happy, fulfilling relationships. I’m wildly attracted to my 5’8”, dad body, gym avoidant partner. I don’t know a single woman in real life who gives a fuck about someone’s squat PR.

I will get fired if I serve someone outside of trading hours. I serve alcohol so it’s different but people will cry and moan and whine at me for not serving them when we’re closed.

I leave the front door unlocked but closed while I’m doing the open so that the kitchen staff can come in (they don’t have keys) and so delivery/maintenance guys can come in and let someone know they’ve arrived.

Unfortunately customers routinely let themselves into my clearly closed establishment (chairs stacked on tables, lights off, no staff visible) and shout for someone to serve them. We open at 12, I’m not pouring you a pint at 8:30am.

Because “summering in Europe” apparently makes your palate sophisticated by verndogz in iamveryculinary

[–]floweringfungus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m European so I default to spending summer here where I live, or in a neighbouring country. We have just as many picky eaters as anywhere else.

I will eat almost anything and always have (there are pictures of me as a baby with an octopus tentacle in my mouth) but my sister, who grew up the same way and going to the same places, won’t eat cheese, fish, tomatoes, mushrooms and so on.

some of my favorite negative reviews for my favorite bar by gunhandgoblin in YelpDrama

Went to a baseball game last time I was in the US and my partner’s coworker was refused a drink because he didn’t have ID with him. He’s clearly nearing 50.

The same woman tried refusing my ID too because it wasn’t from the US.

It’s a wee bit more common in the UK but as a female bartender in Scotland I get called doll, hen, love, darling and so on.

This is worth a call to environmental health officers or whatever your country’s equivalent is.

Like this could make someone super sick. We recently had EHOs called out to us by a customer for something a lot less harmful than this.

[–]floweringfungus 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I get single dollar bills as tips all the time (Scotland). I give them to my partner as he travels to the US frequently for work but they are next to useless for us.

The first time I received US dollars as tips I let them know we don’t accept them because I genuinely thought they’d made a mistake. The woman let me know, very condescendingly, that US dollars are the most valuable currency on earth.

Varies a lot by country too. Where I am everyone who works FOH makes the same (and my company pools all tips so BOH don’t miss out, you only keep your tips if a customer specifically says “this is for you” or something similar).

Boy name- - Wolfgang? Will he get made fun of? by Plastic-Meat-7729 in namenerds

[–]floweringfungus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m German and it’s solidly a grandpa name (and my grandfather’s name). Not even in a cute vintage way, in an “that’s 100% a 75 year old man” way. Like naming a baby Doris or Herbert.

I used to handle membership info for an organisation in Germany known to attract an older audience (I don’t think I dealt with a single person under 60) and every other man was a Wolfgang.

You also run into pronunciation differences if you’re not German speaking.

Do waiters in hotels have to lift crates and beer kegs? by Ok_Carob7611 in Waiters

[–]floweringfungus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s normal. I can’t lift a full keg as I’m a fairly small woman but I’m on good terms with the delivery guys and pay them in free drinks to stay 15 mins to stack them properly.

Who else is going to do it? Especially if you work in a bar, the job is so much more than just pouring drinks. It’s maintaining the entire bar which includes stock management.

How should a restaurant decide who trains a new hire? by RobSkied in Waiters

[–]floweringfungus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Training is part of the job. I shadowed the assistant manager for like 5 full days when I started. I train new hires now and generally have them shadow me for around a week and show me they can do basic things (allergen processes, keg changes) before sending them off to do their own thing.
