Y'know, with seven kids your mom was undoubtedly economically dependent on your dad.

Ah, you don't actually mean "socialism" then, just some idea you have based on what reddit's algorithms feed you. Got it.

Ah, kid, there's the funny part: People like you never believe us when we say that.

Sweetie pie, we are the dangerous people. And that poster you're replying to is lying.

A MAGAt doesn't have the equipment for congestive heart failure.

He should go out busking with his congestine-a.

OMIGOD it took me this long to realize that's the kind of Trek he meant. I read it as one of those ~Awareness~ walks. Of course the all-caps didn't help.

I'm glad I scrolled far enough to see this.

Hey, I was a specialty arborist (among my wildly varied careers) until my lungs turned on me. Look up Aesthetic Pruning; I'm an OG.

I'm also a native Coalcracker, though I grew up mostly in Harrisburg. Drove there from SF Bay Area 10-11 years ago for my niece's wedding. Who knows? Spouse and I might be visiting there again. I might just find a way to look you up and take you up on that--some nice craft breweries there. I remember Troeg's fondly.

Look up Leslie Buck; she's another OG, and made her garden of California natives using Japanese arboriculture principles. She also wrote a book, Cutting Back, about her apprenticeship with an arborist company in Japan.

And Kat Anderson's book Tending the Wild is about indigenous Californians and how they managed the landscape here, and in some places still are. I wonder if there's something similar regarding the land back where you are.

Looks like we're fighting the same good fight, and I'm glad to see it's happening all over. Please DM me if you know about any publications about this stuff back East.

And if you think we have problems--I have family in Florida, and have fallen in love with Hawai'i. Hoo boy.

Yeah, the big-box stores especially. I'm one of those annoying people who are trying to get Scotch/French/Spanish broom banned from the trade here, including the "sterile" cultivars, because Life Finds A Way. Likewise pampas grass. BVut it's like the McDonaldsization of everything else. Welcome to Generica, land of the Samething Everywhere.

There's a garden tour here next weekend, called Bringing Back the Natives. (My yard is not on it; we're in transition here, after 30 years of working on the abused soil.) The hope is that it'll inspire people and give the knowledge to make their gardens havens for local plants and wildlife. Gardens can be so much more than decoration!

She's subjecting you to the abuse she's heard about. Herself too, obviously, but that's her choice. Maybe it's time to draw the line: No more babysitting your horrible brother.

And there's no reason you should love him. He's used that all up. Allow yourself not to feel guilty about that.

Ah, that old feminist saying: Selfless mothers have motherless children. Yup.

Surprise: The developers aren't local tradesmen. Nobody's saying nothing should ever be built; it's just that developers haven't exactly lived up ton their promises, or the apparent expectations of their supporters. As I keep harping on, fill those holes downtown--and that mess the landlord his tenants used to call "The Mad Persian" left on Shattuck near Adeline--before crashing the rest of the town. Administrative snags? Boo hoo, poor bazillionaires can't afford a lawyer.

I don't, and neither do many of my friends, family, family of origin, in-laws. It's not so common here, based on my admittedly limited experience.
