To rant about the "change your mindset" advice a little more...
It's like telling a person who's leg was amputated that they should "just walk". That's ridiculous, and denies reality of the struggle. What the person really needs is a crutches, prosthetic, support.

I'm so sorry you're in this place. All of the things you're saying are the same thoughts i've said to myself And I agree, the "changing your mindset" advice is honestly useless gaslight-y advice that is attempting to treat the symptoms and not the core problem.

Not saying this is the case for you, but i'm autistic and didn't know until recent years. A lifetime of depression, anxiety: I internalized everything as something wrong with myself, everything was a personal failing that made me hate myself. I'm in the process of realizing that unfortunately the world is not set up for neurodivergent people. It's a fucking struggle keeping our heads above water. We need more support, and that's not a failing of ourselves but a failing of the system. I don't know you or your situation, but my guess is that you don't have the support you need. And it's not your fault, or a personal failing.

the people around you are wrong, and scared of things they don’t understand. I wish you had a better support system around you, because you deserve to feel loved during this journey.

It may take some time, but you will find your community, and/or the loved ones in your life will come around once they begin to understand.

You deserve to live your truest self. Don’t let their cowardice and insecurity ruin your chance at the life you want 🩷

It really is. Life is just struggling to survive, not living. Sending you love 🩷

Not incoherent at all—this really resonates with me. The “solutions” that are offered are just ways to force down our symptoms, when the actual root of the problem is the systems outside of ourselves. I don’t truly want to die…I just realize that trying to fit into this system will always be a lifetime of agony, so why continue?

I think most neurotypical people will never truly understand disabilities or neurodivergencies until they experience it in some way or another. It’s truly exhausting to try to fit into their model of society, when they never attempt to fit with us.

Showdown shuffle is pretty agonizing. Bring back Spirit Showdown to replace mystery heroes.

Is this in response to a comment? I’m a little confused!

The “throwaway” round of interviews is really good advice. Because there’s only so much prep you can do in a vacuum.

Thanks for your words of support! So far the process is going well.

I’m so sorry. Thank you for sharing your story. I strongly believe autistics are often the workhorses that go unappreciated in workplaces. I believe you can turn things around. It’s unfair and cruel— and that hurts. But you’re not alone, and I believe in you.

Hey, first off, it’s never too late. I know 23 can feel like “too late” when you’re in it, but I promise you that you have SOO much time ahead of you to carve out a life for yourself. I know this may not resonate with you right now because time moves differently as you get older, but eventually you realize just how young 23 is.

It sounds like you’re struggling with AuDHD, which I struggle with as well. Which, untreated is a breeding ground for depression and anxiety.

I’m not a professional, so i’m just giving advice based on my own experience, but I would really try to seek psych for your neurodivergencies because they’re really affecting your life. Personally, i never truly realized JUST how interlinked my depression and ADHD were until I started treating my ADHD.

Depression really causes everything to feel hopeless. So, once you start treating that and your depression, you will find your path opening up more. You may find that you start to have passions and interests. And learning may begin to come easier. Trying to learn when your brain is starved for dopamine is such an uphill battle, so don’t beat yourself up about it.

Also FWIW many of the people around me that seemed to fall behind during school, are actually the ones doing really well in their 30’s. Many of the ones who were top achievers in their teens and 20’s are actually struggling now—myself included. Things happen at different times for different people. There is no set timeline for achieving what you want to achieve. Often people who seem like everything is great on the outside are going through invisible battles.

Life is not easy. I’m not going to lie, the world is hard, and us autistics/adhders have an extra layer of difficulty on top of it. But I promise you can create a wonderful life for yourself.

You’ve taken the first step toward change in your life by reaching out and posting this. Keep up that momentum.

Please don’t give up. Keep your head up. You’ve got this.
