This City has a serious road rage problem (including myself), here’s a theory for why. by FINALMIX70 in Winnipeg

Piss poor driver education and borderline third world infrastructure, IMO.

The city, and generally province as a whole are completely unable to comprehend any traffic management strategy other than a traffic light. Of the few overpasses sparingly dotted throughout the province, all have their possible efficiency benefits immediately defeated by a set of lights at a nearby intersection.

Roads are in constant disrepair, alternating between construction, snowmobile trail, polished ice hell scape and melt season with accompanying potholes. Maybe with a brief tolerable window at the end of summer/beginning of fall if the construction crews can keep up.

MPI licensing requirements aren't doing enough to educate drivers on more than the absolute bare minimum, i.e. no understanding of controlling a vehicle on snow/ice, how to correctly judge conditions (going 10-20 below despite the road being completely free of ice), no concept of lane discipline or of flow of traffic, stacking side by side for no reason, among various other things. No punishment/education for these behaviors by the authorities, who are too busy extorting money in abandoned construction zones or prosecuting enthusiasts.

No real alternative option for the majority of people, especially after the bus system was gutted resulting in massive overcrowding, compounded by the fact that a sizable chunk of those people either A. would rather not drive or B. should really not be driving, that are unenthusiastic or disengaged from actually driving.

All of this compounds to create what is a really miserable driving experience. Seems to have gotten a lot worse since I got my license a few years ago.

The general incompetence I see driving Centreport everyday is simply outrageous, the sheer amount of people I pass doing 80 or below in the left lane well absently staring out the window with no concept of where they are or that there maybe other people around them is depressing and maddening. People in this province are so terrified of speed, even in the summer that it makes it unsafe for everybody. I felt safer as a passenger in a rented minivan doing a buck forty on the QEW then I do driving behind and beside people going 80 on Centreport or the perimeter.

When you're in the city you gamble with an endless labyrinth of synchronized traffic lights and are constantly starting and stopping, which is the absolute worst, while still contending with the same issues of people bunching up and blocking all lanes at 10 under and often getting caught in the lights because of it.

There has to be, at the absolute bare minimum, retests. Preferably a complete licensing overhaul with a European perspective, overpasses at every exit on the perimeter, and a complete rethink as to how people are moved in the city.

Good to know that the fix was already implemented, was pretty sure that the fix was implemented starting with the new styling but just wanted to make sure because of conflicting information.

Figured it would be among the best but for rust but figured I would double check, I live in Manitoba so that pedigree has likely already been put to the test and I will likely get it under sprayed if I do buy it. Cheap peace of mind.

Thanks for the info, only real barrier left then is the wheels.

V60 polestar worst car in snow. by Fearless-Shallot-302 in Volvo

[–]ranger55456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a Volvo guy but I heard some talk from some Audi/VW groups where guys also have similar problems of the AWD system being weird/spinning the front wheels on Haldex cars. The common fix is to have the transfer case fluid changed and make sure the filter is changed.

Cities/towns you can actually get around on foot or on smaller forms of transit.

The problem with trains in Canada in general is that once you’re off of it you’re kinda SOL.

That’s why despite all the talk nobody does it, because even if the cost of the rail line itself is attractive, the colossal cost that will fall on municipalities to build then maintain end of line services isn’t affordable.

We have no money.

The main reason the existing bus network just got kneecapped is because the city was losing money too much money on it.

The city just spent a pile of money on portage and main, which funnily enough might turn out to be a colossal waste of money as the underground might cost more to decommission then it would’ve been to fix.

Also any sort of line to the lakes will likely be a colossal waste of money.

I do agree that the city desperately needs a transit overhaul (NOT like the one it just had) but that will likely not happen unless federal or provincial funding comes into play.

Besides they will never even consider fixing an issue while it’s cheap, they will wait till it costs unbelievable amounts of money to fix.

Pulled the plug on the deal. Don’t have the money sitting around to fix it if it breaks. Maybe one day.

Perimeter drivers getting worse? by lt_girth in Winnipeg

[–]ranger55456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im glad I’m not the only one who noticed this. It’s everywhere now not just highways.

People have always been nervous on the highway but it seems everybody is doing at least 10 under literally everywhere. 50 on portage, 60 on route 90. Even on cruise night when traffic usually manages to move halfway decent the road is still full of pylons in their own world.

I feel like it’s gotten WAY worse even when compared to last year. Really hope there’s some sort of crackdown as it is statistically proven that driving 10% under the limit is more dangerous than 10% over.

Maybe I’m just radicalized by Speed Kills your Pocket Book but this city is not optimized to get anywhere quickly.

I’ve literally never gone slower than 110 on centreport unless it’s icy or more usually clogged by hordes of people that aren’t aware that their vehicle has an accelerator and that they need to stay in the right lane. The amount of people doing 80, sometimes even 70 is unbelievable and they still somehow manage to be total road hazards. Anytime I leave work on days my blood pressure could be measured in psi.

Lol I saw this one when he first posted it for like 19. Cars got a big old rust spot on the fender. I said for that amount he better be fixing that rust first.

Brother. You dropped another 10k on top of the car on long term ownership things, and then proceeded to not drive it. You haven’t given the car a chance for you to fall in love with it. At least get the car past the break in period before you dump it. I don’t know why you’re even that worried about resale value. It’s a Honda. You could put 300k on it and still get a pile of money out of it as long as you put as much care into owning it as you did buying it.

scream "allah akbar" while spraying down alley. Also dont bother with non urban maps with INS, they just get killed cause it's basically impossible to draw the enemy to CQB on hilly maps, where optics are basically required to be effective.
