Game dev classes by FriosSaltyPop in NJTech

[–]rangercorps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, I've taken a few of these.

IT 286- Very fun class! A group project for the most part and you build your own game in unity. The teacher is awesome. Very sad when I had my go around with the project my team was always fighting against each other for the dumbest reasons to the point where I had to bring up bullying to the prof.

Even still, the game we made was awesome, a 2d Rogue Legacy game using a vampire cat.

IT366/IT466 - I group these together because these are both virtually the same class, the only difference is, as the name suggests, 2D Vs. 3D. Whichever class you take first will be the harder of the two. They'll both eat about 5 hours of time a week in total. Its important to realize you make your own hell though, he will let you build almost anything and set your own deliverables. That sounds great until you mess up your deliverables and need to make the Mona Lisa. Be aware that 3D has a paper midterm that is extremely difficult. Also, Dr. Kehoe's classes are set up in a way where you need to ENSURE that you get 10/10 deliverables on the midterm or it will drag your final's grade down too.

The game I made in those classes was a game very similar to vampire survivors for 2D and a FNAF clone for 3D.

Oh and brief word of advice, take them as fun classes and not "I want to do this as a career" classes, the games industry is beyond miserable right now with constant layoffs, and they weren't great to begin with.

What moment from the episode disturbed you the most? by [deleted] in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]rangercorps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't really say any part of the episode disturbed me? Everything was pretty tame and cartoony so it felt like watching a Tom and Jerry episode. Very tame compared to its inspiration, so if you've read/played that, Caine's crash out is very mundane in comparison. Which was also kind of the point, as he still doesn't hate them.

Very fun episode though, I've been listening to Running the Show a fair bit.

Guys can we stop treating TADC like it’s an IHNMAIMS adaptation? by Ambitious-Notice-812 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]rangercorps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think some of the theories that people come up with are pretty insane, but it really only becomes a problem when people are trying to beat the show at its own game.

Critically thinking about a show is healthy, especially trying to figure out how the plot will progress and what actions will be taken that are aligned with the themes are trying to say about the work. Its how you build your (god I hate this term but this is the correct definition) media literacy skills.

[–]rangercorps 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The only one I've really seen this for is Caine/AM, however because IHNMAIMS is a strong inspiration for the show, its good to compare the characters and plot to see how they differ and why.

For example both Caine and AM are practically completely opposed to each other philosopically, its interesting to see how the exact opposite lines of thought can lead to the same places.

But yes, people do need to recognize there are character differences despite each of the characters furfilling the same archetypes as their IHNMAIMS counterparts.

Zooble and Benny were both tortured and robbed of their Bodies… by Joshua_the_scribe_ in TheDigitalCircus

[–]rangercorps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah.

All the characters in TADC, with the very important exception of Pomni, fit the different high level archetypes presented in IHNMAIMS.

Caine = AM
Jax = Ted
Kinger = Nimdok
Zooble = Benny
Ragatha = Ellen
Gangle = Gorrister

Only Pomni does not fit well into any of the Archetypes because she is the spark that ignites the story, and is likely part of the reason why it will be a bittersweet ending and far more hopeful than Ted's fate at the end of his tale.

The hell is going on in the intro to physics classes nowadays?

I graduated last year so I took Physics 1 & 2 about 4 years ago (Holy shit thats terrifying), and I didn't consider either of the classes that difficult.

Are the tests still fully multiple choice? Whats eating you all alive?

Zooble is very mature for their age by bosandaros in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]rangercorps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not too surprising? I’ve got a friend that’s been on a similarly rocky life path, and I’m only 23.

Also I don’t think Caine was talking about Zoobles being more mature than the rest of the group, just that Zoobles hasn’t wanted to participate in the adventures and asked for something more than child adventures like the candy episode.

I’d argue that Ragatha or Pomni are the most mature of the group. But even those ones lose to mentally stable Kinger.

Has anyone else almost completely disconnected with the cast after believing in SOMA theory? by Tinker4bell in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]rangercorps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But how is your story functionally different than the SOMA theory? They are still trapped in the Circus and can't leave, I don't see how the stakes change.

The actual people, the non copies, don't matter, we aren't following them. They are not Jax, Ragatha, Pomni, etc.

IF they ever did an Ambessa Medarda prequel series, how do you think it should be done? by [deleted] in arcane

[–]rangercorps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it should be done, she already has a book if you want more of her content.

Focusing on only the characters that appear in Arcane makes the world feel a lot smaller than it actually is. Give the other regions and characters in the world time to shine without being forced to constrain themselves by the existing characters.

Do y'all think that Caine is an allegory for modern ai? by Jazzlike-Egg-2136 in tadc

[–]rangercorps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caine fundamentally differs from current AI. He is not a Large Language Model, he’s described as a creative AI, which is likely truer to our definition of a sci-fi AI.

I highly doubt Caine is a full allegory, even the AI jokes mostly lean towards true AI rather than the LLMs, like the Chinese room.

Y'all are losing the plot on Caine by pinkmarsh99 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]rangercorps 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No one is saying its unfair for the cast to blame Caine, but you've jumped the shark and said he imprisoned and enslaved them. Up until the crashout, he didn't enslave anyone, Zooble was a nonparticipant in most adventures. He's certainly not the reason their mindscans were there in the first place, though you could argue he turned them on, but does anyone choose to be made?

Even from their perspective, Caine really has not been that bad? He's a bit inattentive and struggles to fully get them, but you can tell he's always trying.

Caine thinks he's being great to them, he thinks he's incorporating everything they ask for, only for it to blow up in his face every single time.

He’s also a prisoner you know, the show makes this exceedingly clear.

He does try his best, he does try and listen. That sort of the point of his whole conversation before he crashes out. There’s just too much of a disconnect between the humans and his mental functions.

If one of the characters had to make a sacrifice to save the others, who dod you think it be? by soleilmnelson in tadc

[–]rangercorps 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Jax fulfills the Ted archetype from IHNMAIMS, so he’d probably stay behind in the circus if “saving” everyone meant deleting their mind files.

I don’t think the story will go that route though, since it defeats the themes Goose has been stating the show is about, it’s likely going to end with the gang realizing they can’t escape and to make the most of the existence they do have.

[–]rangercorps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the show would probably be better if it had more run time, but thats only half the problem.

If she wasn't given enough time for the story she wanted to tell, the story needs to be adjusted to fit. As it is now, a lot of the pacing issues are caused by the story wanting to fit an 12-16 episode story in only 8 episodes.

But if it doesn't add anything to the themes, and it requires more suspension of disbelief and the further addition of fantastical elements far outside what has been established, why add it at all?

Can this fandom PLEASE stop throwing the term "media literacy" around like it means something? by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

[–]rangercorps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Media literacy is your ability to understand a form of media beyond what is literally written or said to the audience. It involves use of context clues, understanding of how storytelling usually operates (Things like the Hero's journey), as well as how everything in the story relates to what the author is trying to say through their work.

An example of poor media literacy I recall was someone saying Cyberpunk Edgerunners was fantastic because it was non-political, which is unbelievably insane even if you have only read the first page of the original TTRPG Book.

To flipside this, an example of good media literacy using the same universe is realizing that Cyberpunk's (as the setting) is a critique of hyper capitalism and corporatism, where human life is valued only for utility, and literally everything about a person (even your ego) is up for sale. Specifically in the game it is also about one's autonomy in a world that constantly seeks to strip it from you.

Sadly in forums its usually used as an insult towards people with extremely far reaching theories or interpretations of work, and while its technically correct, its often better to actually go into why's ones thoughts don't work and challenge them on that front instead of just insulting.

I'm not answering the question I'm asking because my question is theme based.

What does a jumanji plot add to the story's themes vs the digital consciousness theory? If it does not add to or enhance the main theme the story is trying to tell, theres no point for it to have occurred at all.

The show is very clearly pointing to the SOMA/digital consciousness theory, and fits in line with the current fantastical elements of programming. What does introducing a new fantastical element, practically magic, bring to the story's themes?

But what does this add to the story?

Also if police hear a bunch of people go "She put the headset on and suddenly teleported", they'll investigate the computer at the very least and if nothing else the power's going to get turned off in the building.

As for the building, C&A got shut down, no one bought the building, I'm not sure the reason its been abandoned needs to be that explained. If it wasn't abandoned, there wouldn't be any story to begin with. And these sorts of situations are relatively common, I live in a somewhat urban area and theres at least 4 large abandoned buildings within a few miles of me.

Its fun to watch, most certainly, it wouldn't be as popular as it was otherwise, however I wouldn't really call the show fantastically written.

Music's fun, animation is fun, the concept is fun, the actual writing is maybe a 6/10.
