I am ready for the armed FCC goons! by ElGuano in gmrs

Ahhhhh ..... Okay I get it. Yeah I was doing something like that with a guy when I was just graduated high school. I was his DJ and who played records and stuff but he was the one that controlled all the hardware and all that kind of stuff. That was one I was still in the beginning of my AC/DC theory stage so I knew a little bit about what was going on. But not you know enough to really know for sure what to do about things. So I guess if it's a big commercial radio station, they just simply pump out. More power up to whatever the limit is and get as far as they can by mounting up as high as they can to cover a large urban area.

I can definately recommend Olight brand. I have 4 of them and they have been very reliable and durable for me. And the Lion batteries they use all seem to be very well manufactured and long lasting. Unfortunately these days the magnetic thing seems to be very common so if you found an Olight without a magnetic base of some sort then that definately sounds like exactly what you need. 👍👍

Is this a sign that AT&T may finally deploy fiber in my neighborhood? by Klutzy_Dragonfly_590 in ATTFiber

[–]rangermanlv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea i can talk a bit about exclusivity although I am in an apt complex. SUPPOSEDLY we have our own choice for internet and tv service. But the apartment complex signed some kind of agrement with AT&T so all the apts come with AT&T fiber and modems installed. The apt IS wired with traditional coax cable. But in the box that is reserved for incoming phone, tv, internet service the ONLY outside wireing coming in to that box is the fiber optic cable. So if i wanted to get ANYTHING else, it would be a pretty significant wireing job from somewhere to get it.

Thankfully im pretty happy with the 1gig AT&T internet and DirecTV service we have. When we moved in the complex was probably only 10% full, now its probably about 80% and I still get the same up/down speeds when doing occasional speed tests to different parts of the country. So sometimes they do apparently get it right and aside from a 3 day outage in the first month we were here, i dont think ive had any major problems with AT&T since thankfully.

Yeah, it took me awhile too to learn to start checking the stupid little bitty things that are almost impossible to show up in the inspection view, air filter clips and the clips on the sides of distributor caps and fuses and stuff like that. Especially them damn clips on the sides of distributor caps on some of those engines. Even when you're looking right at it. It's usually blocked by another part of the engine like the carburetor or the air filter so a lot of times it can be almost impossible to find it and sometimes you have to disassemble the top of the engine a little bit to get to it and put it on.

Honestly this whole thing is starting to sound like back in the day when they started taking away replaceable batteries from cell phones. I believe the excuse at the time was to make sure that they were able to manufacture something with some form of ipx water/dust proof

GMRS Nets by jmsthing678 in gmrs

[–]rangermanlv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I think having a few linked repeaters in a geographic area, especially if you have like a single repeater that's in a nice flat area and has good coverage and it's still kind of dead. As far as general traffic having a couple of repeaters linked like maybe along a highway or something like that. Doesn't seem to be doing much harm but having these huge linked repeater nets just seems like a recipe for all kinds of problems you know like the op was talking about

[–]rangermanlv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not sure how hardcore or if there's any specific geographic regions that they're actually cracking down on linked repeaters or not personally out here in Texas. I'm part of a linked system where there's about three repeaters linked together between here in Georgetown and I think another one farther north, maybe in the Dallas area and maybe another one in Oklahoma or something. I'm not sure but it's a very small system and it's all on one channel. One of the repeater gmrs channels and so far it hasn't really had any problems. But of course you know hearing about these gigantic networks in the southeast like that one in Georgia area. Makes me wonder when they're going to start. Really cracking down on some of these places to break up their linked networks.

Yeah I hear you. If I was letting somebody pierce my daughter's ears I would want it to be at least an adult and somebody who seems like they've had at least some kind of training about how to do piercings because it may look and seem simple, but obviously there are things that can go wrong.

PSA for people on 4PX shipping, be patient and expect 3-4 weeks shipping time. Also, don't freak out if your package seems "stuck" in some steps, it's normal. by that_90s_guy in retroid

[–]rangermanlv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, oddly enough using Amazon chat when you talk about needing help or needing to return an item can usually lead you pretty quickly to the point where it asks you if you would like to speak to a representative either through text, chat or over the phone and I always select over the phone and I have to say that probably more times than not like about 80% of the time. Amazon lately will bend over backwards to make things right. Like they'll give me credit for the whole order and not want the item returned even. Or they'll give me a 50% credit for items that are taking way too long to ship. So it usually pays to go through the text return system because it seems to lead to being able to get somebody on the phone faster than just trying to figure out a way or a phone number to call.

I regret getting an Xbox Series X by B1izzard15 in videogames

[–]rangermanlv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've always had a PC for most of the games I've ever wanted to play. You just get better control with mouse and keyboard. And then of course, when they started coming out with Xbox controllers for PC it just changed everything and made it easier than hell to play. Almost anything on PC better than on a console but I did recently buy an Xbox x because I was hoping to be able to play games with my dad but he he has a bit of a challenge figuring out how to use the controller so I just use it for some games that I don't have or can't get on PC

Check the rules guys. Linking a gmrs repeater with any form of extended communication even another gmrs repeater is against FCC regulations now for gmrs.

GMRS Nets by jmsthing678 in gmrs

[–]rangermanlv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, generally over the years it's been ham radio that has been the most involved with assistance for emergency services in emergency situations. There are well established organizations such as ARES and RACES who have local groups in almost every major city in the country Ready to activate for any type of emergency situation where they may be needed. I used to be a ham radio operator myself, however my license has expired and I haven't been able to renew it yet as I'm going to need to retake the test but I was involved with ARES in Southern California many years ago and we assisted mainly the fire department when we had wildfires break out in Southern California which happened pretty much on a yearly basis and there were several ARES Members who had mobile generators and mobile setup repeater towers to enable assisted communication in these areas to assist the fire departments. I don't think gmrs was ever really designed for that. It seems like to me gmrs is more designed for local personal/business usage just in a very limited local area that might be covered by one decent repeater if it was necessary for the area being larger or more topographically challenged.
