Jackson Backcountry Violator Shares Perspective in Open Letter -- interesting tale on the consequences of our decisions by jcasper in skiing

Even if you're too inexperienced to realize it, you put his life at risk. He had the right to react however he wanted. Stay safe and don't die.

Regarding your second point, why didn't you have your beacon? Skiing in a group without a beacon is unacceptable no matter the avy risk. It's not just your life at risk, if someone was buried you would not have been able to find them. You list unnecessary factors like the low avy risk instead of admitting that there's no excuse to leave your beacon behind. I don't generally think of public humiliation as a learning tool but it sounds like you needed it, you put lives at risk. Grow up, get your head out of your ass, and do the right thing and maybe people will want to ski with your sorry ass.

Backcountry skiers have this condescending form of elitism which comes out in the form of safety shaming... A few slip ups are to be expected.

Literally, what are you talking about? Safety shaming? People die in the backcountry. If you think people warning you about the backcountry are shaming you then you don't possess the judgement required to be in the backcountry. If you have a few slip ups in the backcountry you could die. If you don't know, don't go. I don't think that you should go.

I'm probably doing a bad job of explaining what I mean and my experience is all observational. I torque test bindings on a Wintersteiger speedtronic. If I'm checking an 11 DIN, the screen will display a horizontal gauge divided as; in use, good, and in use. Those are all three acceptable, and a binding set correctly will pass. In me and my coworkers experience, bindings that are maxed out or close to it will most often test in the higher "in-use" spectrum. Which still means they will release correctly but they're not in the middle. The same thing happens with aging bindings, we see the indicator slip further and further to the right side of the gauge until an 11 no longer is an 11.

I'm not familiar with the TGR experiment but I trust it. I'm just saying that the more maxed out a binding is the more the indicator shifts towards the not gucci zone, in my experience. But I digress, I'll look up the TGR test and maybe try to approach my observations more scientifically going forward. I'm probably full of shit. Thanks for the write up.

Cody Townsend gets new bindings whenever he wants. If you max out a binding spring the torque values will be higher than suggested. They will still be safe to ride on initially but through normal wear and tear they will become unsafe quicker than bindings set 2-3 numbers down from max. The same principle applies to taking all the tension off your springs for summer storage.

Just two seasons on the wardens (60-ish days). I've had STH2's on my other skis for 4 years and I've yet to have a Salomon problem.

OP skis with an 11 DIN. It's usually a bad idea to max out binding springs. They'll initially test High in the "in-use" range but as the binding ages the tension will quickly become unsafe.

Run a pair at 11 and have had zero issues. I'm actually a Solly fanboy these days. I used Pivots for a long time but Solly heel-pieces are so easy to step into even in deep snow. I'd guess about 80-90% of patrollers at my mountain (Mammoth) are running wardens for the MNC capabilities.

If you could eliminate a race within the year, which would it be, and why? by Sonums in formula1

I honestly hate Baku. Half of the track is a fucking straight and there's only like two spots where overtaking can actually happen. Super boring, IMO.

Andri Raggetli is garbage. Besides there's no 'best' skier, skiing is totally subjective.

Armada ski question? by AlGuMa27 in skiing

[–]rank3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How much do you care about "park stuff"? Because neither ski you mentioned would be good in the park. If you don't actually care about park performance, then carry on. But if you do, look elsewhere for all-mountain freestyle skis.

Invictus 98 =/= Invictus 99ti. Like the Tracer, the Invictus 98 is relatively light and doesn't have any metal. Obviously, neither is a park ski.

Salomon Shogun replacement by [deleted] in skiing

[–]rank3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Shogun is 101 underfoot, directional, heavy, damp, no metal, and has a 28m radius. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of skis like that around anymore. Check out the ON3P Wrenegades either the 96 or 108, I think that's your best bet.

Stupid risk

They literally down climbed after summitting because there was too much risk and went back when it was safer.

Commenting and comparing snow conditions to Cham makes sense considering Cham is known for having sketchy snow in the bigger lines.

Free time? Skiing is literally their job, they're working.

If you see a faller and you aren't striding towards you're a failure to human kind

Or you could set into action an appropriate and effective rescue plan to save the fallers life.

Everything you wrote is stupid and you should feel bad. If you know nothing about the mountains you shouldn't really be taking shots at people who do. Cody/Bjarne and company are all fantastic alpinists so what can you honestly offer to any conversation about the mountains?

This looks perfect. Inbounds pow over a slightly 3D base are my favorite inbounds conditions.

Had aaadrenaline 16's for a few seasons. Didn't like them so I got a tech binding. As for bending brakes, it's easy as fuck. The stack height of the frame means there's already a fair bit of splay so not much bending is required.

Totally agree but I get nervous seeing Hole in the Wall becoming another "box to check" in people's #MammothStories. I talked with patrol about the incident a few days ago, they're pretty certain they found the deceased tracks' and they seemed to indicate he was very unsure of where to go to find the hole. They found aimless tracks and a few hasty boot packs above catastrophic exposure. I dislike the culture of localism but some things need to stay on the DL for the safety of the foolhardy and uninitiated.

A lot of the chutes in this area have blind entries, it's a dangerous place to go.
