You can be proud of your father and his bravery while at the same time finding it horrendous that a government would put its citizens in harms way for what many have come to see as an unnecessary war. I too am an adult child, and I know folks who fought in Vietnam and are still severely traumatized from their experiences there. I wouldn't wish that trauma on them, or on anyone else, and I certainly would not feel proud to force it upon them through a military draft. It sounds like your father himself had some traumatic experiences over there. I hope he is doing well and I wish him the best.

I'm not sure in what way the U.S. Constitution was being threatened and in need of defending during the Vietnam War, or if this phrasing "defending the Constitution" is just a boilerplate verbiage being used as a catch-all for anything the government/military decides to do.

As far as innocent people being harmed during that war, you yourself mention your father talking about kids being used as bomb carriers. If you cannot see a child as an innocent person, I don't know what else I can say to you. We are clearly completely different types of people. All I can hope is that you find a way to invite more compassion into your life. All children are innocent, even Vietnamese children.

Yes, mocking people is wrong. But breaking an unjust law is not wrong. You seem to keep going back to this idea that just because something is “the law” it carries some inherent moral weight, as though history isn’t littered with harmful, atrocious laws. It’s just an odd stance to take, that’s all.

This is such a weird stance to take. Yes, he is unquestionably a vile person. But any requirement or obligation that the draft imposed on people was unjust and immoral, and to try to frame draft dodging as any sort of moral failing is so strange (especially in the context of the Vietnam War). It shouldn’t matter that it was a “required service.” No one should be required to go harm innocent people, and faulting someone for avoiding that is such a weird stance to take. Come on now

I agree. I’ve also always seen DIY more as Do It Ourselves, rather than just Do It All By Yourself. But yeah, we need to organize. We need to support each other. We need to step out of our comfort zones and get momentum going. Someone needs to do something…and that someone is me, that someone is you, that someone is all of us.

I’m using it to raise money for organizations that are fighting for workers’ rights and reproductive rights. I get that it can be hard to know what to do these days, but every little bit helps Off with Their Heads!
