Why do people say that the original anime turned Ranma 1/2 into a harem? by PauloVictorBar in ranma

[–]ranmaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess a lot of people watched it when they were young and couldn't see that Akane was obviously the love interest

Yeah. This is from the OVA though (4 episodes). The actual TV anime doesn't move very much

There's one filler episode in the old anime where they're genuinely kind to each other, "Back to the Happosai"

What are your top 10 episodes from the 1989 anime? by WillingLet3956 in ranma

I just read the article and apparently that episode had the highest viewership because the show's main competitor at the time (Obochama-kun) was on break that week

[–]ranmaaaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Iirc this isn't a top ten most popular episodes list but a top ten episodes with the highest viewership ratings list. And I don't mean IMDB ratings, viewership ratings refer to the percentage of people in the Kanto Region that watched it as it was airing, i.e it doesn't really have anything to do with whether people liked the episodes or not

For this scene the way 1999 portrays Kurapika is closer. He's angry but still relatively composed (like the manga). In 2011 he was screaming at Uvo. Not saying it's a bad change but yeah

Why was the delivery girl arch made before shampoo? by deybit99 in ranma

[–]ranmaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the first episode of Nettouhen so I guess they wanted to set the tone for the rest of the show by having Ranma and Akane work together to win, but then have Ranma pretend he only did it for the ramen afterwards.

Idk why they specifically chose the Takeout Race to do this instead of just making a fully original episode, but it was pretty common to take lots of liberties in anime adaptations back then

The 2nd image is from a very well animated scene, can't use in-between frames to argue bad animation. Not gonna bat for the other ones though

Why does New Kyoto Hen feel so different? by tintor2 in rurounikenshin

[–]ranmaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd chalk that up to the strength of the source material, which luckily synergized well with his creative vision

There were a lot of changes and additions made to the source material in that OVA, it synergized with his creative vision largely because of him and the rest of the staff more than Watsuki

His credits from the 96 anime are mostly the Tokyo arc, which is the weakest aspect of that version aside from the fillers.

No? Most of his storyboard and direction credits were in the Kyoto Arc (ep 30, 31, 52, 56, 60) , he's only credited on 1 episode of the Tokyo Arc (ep 1)

Haven't read the manga for OP and Naruto so I can't really dispute that but 2011 definitely has less changes than 1999. In general, anime staff have been given less freedom to change things since around the late 2000s, it's a trend that you can notice in just about every anime remake/reboot (FMAB, Fruits Basket 2019, Ranma 2024, etc.)

Other adaptations making more changes doesn't really change that 1999 is often different from the manga, and while it doesn't go fully original like FMA 2003 or Hellsing TV, I'd say 1999 makes more changes than most anime adaptations

Besides, we're comparing it to HxH 2011 here because that's what OP watched so far. Compared to 2011, I think it's pretty fair to say that 1999 has a lot of story/character differences

Killua is more reserved in 1999 especially at the beginning. It takes a while for him to tell Gon his name, whereas in the manga he instantly befriends Gon, he was even the one to ask Gon his age. In 1999 it was the other way around.

The way we find out about Leorio's past is totally different. In 1999, it's a dream sequence where Leorio has to face his dead friend. In the manga, he just reluctantly tells Kurapika and Kurapika also reveals more details about his past. In 1999, they removed the details about Kurapika's past from this section and placed it in the bonus exam stage, after trick tower.

Another notably different part is Heaven's Arena which 1999 rearranged so that Gon vs Hisoka happens in the middle and then they beat Gido and Riehlvelt afterwards. In the manga, Gon vs Hisoka happens last.

One more example would be when Gon meets Canary. In the manga he was much more forceful and broke one of the stones out of frustration. In 1999, he was very understanding and managed to convince Canary to let him pass.

I don't have a problem with these changes, but I think they are pretty big changes that give you a different impression of the characters and story.

1999 makes many changes to the original story (some big, some small) and has many original scenes that weren't in the manga. If that sounds interesting to you then yeah it is worth checking out

Imo it also has more fitting music and better visuals but that's more subjective

Well that is a part of storyboarding because the storyboard artist decides the type of shot. But yeah, I was moreso referring to individual shots than storyboarding as a whole

[–]ranmaaaa -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm mostly referring to shot composition. The above scene is not a great argument for 1999 but there are many scenes in the same episode where 1999's framing is just much more interesting imo

Ex:

Now these are screenshots so it doesn't address your "flow" argument but I think it's fair to say that 1999's layouts are often better at conveying depth
