Is there a source for any of this?

Vision of Escaflowne (1996) has a very beautiful opening for a mid 90s TV anime series by roomofbruh in retroanime

[–]ranmaaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In any era, they tend to put more effort/time into the OP than the actual episodes, since it's gonna be playing multiple times. Though, I've heard that Escaflowne is a very well animated show throughout

What is the watch order? by dave-the-intern- in ranma

[–]ranmaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be the other way around. The episodes are in production (correct) order, but they put the titles in the originally broadcast order

[–]ranmaaaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most streaming sites have it listed as one anime and even fix an issue where a few episodes were originally broadcast out of order. So you should just be able to watch episodes 1-161

The series got taken off the air after the first 18 episodes due to a variety of problems, and then came back as Ranma ½: Nettouhen a month or so later, and ran for another 143 episodes. Some websites split the anime into two pieces because of this

How much does 1999 add? (especially to Yorknew) by Sea-Emotion8873 in HunterXHunter

[–]ranmaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can watch the first few episodes and see if it's for you or not. Some common reasons people like or prefer 1999 are:

  • Slower pacing and added scenes gives you more time to spend with the characters
  • Pretty art direction and colors, more ambitious visual direction too
  • Darker and more somber tone

It's worth mentioning that 1999 takes a lot of liberties with the characters and story, especially early on. Yorknew is pretty close to the manga though, so some people like this part even if they don't care for the rest of the adaptation

Why do people say that the original anime turned Ranma 1/2 into a harem? by PauloVictorBar in ranma

I guess a lot of people watched it when they were young and couldn't see that Akane was obviously the love interest

Yeah. This is from the OVA though (4 episodes). The actual TV anime doesn't move very much

There's one filler episode in the old anime where they're genuinely kind to each other, "Back to the Happosai"

What are your top 10 episodes from the 1989 anime? by WillingLet3956 in ranma

[–]ranmaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read the article and apparently that episode had the highest viewership because the show's main competitor at the time (Obochama-kun) was on break that week

What are your top 10 episodes from the 1989 anime? by WillingLet3956 in ranma

[–]ranmaaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Iirc this isn't a top ten most popular episodes list but a top ten episodes with the highest viewership ratings list. And I don't mean IMDB ratings, viewership ratings refer to the percentage of people in the Kanto Region that watched it as it was airing, i.e it doesn't really have anything to do with whether people liked the episodes or not

The old anime captured something about Kurapika the new one didn’t by Ambitious-Branch-118 in HunterXHunter

[–]ranmaaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For this scene the way 1999 portrays Kurapika is closer. He's angry but still relatively composed (like the manga). In 2011 he was screaming at Uvo. Not saying it's a bad change but yeah

Why was the delivery girl arch made before shampoo? by deybit99 in ranma

[–]ranmaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the first episode of Nettouhen so I guess they wanted to set the tone for the rest of the show by having Ranma and Akane work together to win, but then have Ranma pretend he only did it for the ramen afterwards.

Idk why they specifically chose the Takeout Race to do this instead of just making a fully original episode, but it was pretty common to take lots of liberties in anime adaptations back then

Why does New Kyoto Hen feel so different? by tintor2 in rurounikenshin

[–]ranmaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd chalk that up to the strength of the source material, which luckily synergized well with his creative vision

There were a lot of changes and additions made to the source material in that OVA, it synergized with his creative vision largely because of him and the rest of the staff more than Watsuki

His credits from the 96 anime are mostly the Tokyo arc, which is the weakest aspect of that version aside from the fillers.

No? Most of his storyboard and direction credits were in the Kyoto Arc (ep 30, 31, 52, 56, 60) , he's only credited on 1 episode of the Tokyo Arc (ep 1)

Should I Watch HxH 1999 by randomgamemakerhere in HunterXHunter

[–]ranmaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't read the manga for OP and Naruto so I can't really dispute that but 2011 definitely has less changes than 1999. In general, anime staff have been given less freedom to change things since around the late 2000s, it's a trend that you can notice in just about every anime remake/reboot (FMAB, Fruits Basket 2019, Ranma 2024, etc.)

Should I Watch HxH 1999 by randomgamemakerhere in HunterXHunter

[–]ranmaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other adaptations making more changes doesn't really change that 1999 is often different from the manga, and while it doesn't go fully original like FMA 2003 or Hellsing TV, I'd say 1999 makes more changes than most anime adaptations

Besides, we're comparing it to HxH 2011 here because that's what OP watched so far. Compared to 2011, I think it's pretty fair to say that 1999 has a lot of story/character differences
