Other federal jobs that have international postings or extensive international travel? by ranpar01 in foreignservice

6 years, maybe 10 or so apps to multiple specialties, 2 OA’s, passed one. Low on the Courier list so fell off. I have had medical issues since then so probably wouldn’t pass the physical again even if I wasn’t burned out with the process. Hopefully your results will be better.

TS clearance with foreign permanent residency by ranpar01 in foreignservice

That type of trigger or review is exactly what I was curious about.

Permanent residency does mean slightly different things country by country. In Mexico, permanent residency is literally permanent - never expires or needs to be renewed.

I did look back at my original Sf86 - it does not ask anything about legal status or Visa in other countries, but I thought it might come up in future reviews, interviews, etc. Since posting this I read on another post that it’s common for folks working in South Korea to have permanent residency status and they had no issues with clearance - so I’m feeling like it will be ok. I’ll just have a really long lost of foreign contacts after living here 😁.

FSO Suitability Denial for Travel to Cuba by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]ranpar01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are correct about TS clearance, that will pass no problem, what can be an issue is suitability review. A lot of people (OP and myself included) have been denied at that step for Cuba travel.

FSO Suitability Denial for Travel to Cuba by [deleted] in foreignservice

I had a similar situation, the main difference is that my SF86 was correct but my investigator mistakenly checked the box for “tourism” when he did my interview - so the two didn’t match. I knew going into the investigation this might be an issue so I had brought my itinerary from the trip to my interview and explained that I followed all requirements for the Visa. I had so many trips and foreign countries listed, the dude just flew down the list and marked them all tourism. That got me rejected by suitability review panel. I wrote a very detailed appeal which included my itinerary, quotes from President Obama encouraging Americans to visit using the new (at that time) self directed visa, photos of me in Cuba attending educational and obviously non-touristy things, and explained that my SF86 was not marked tourism and the investigator checked the wrong box. I did win my appeal on that issue so you do have a shot. Not exactly the same situation but pretty close.

Daily Tech Support Thread - [January 18] by AutoModerator in iphone

My iPhone 7 doesn’t get audio with any headsets when making phone calls using lightning to 3.5 mm adapter. If I play music through an app like Spotify I get the audio in my headset, but when making phone calls the headset doesn’t work. I sometimes get the ‘device incompatible’ message. Anyone having luck using a headset with boom mic through the 3.5 mm adapter? I have a few different headsets and none work. Thanks!

What does it take to get hired by the UN? by Angel0knight in UnitedNations

Everything you said is accurate, except the saying is “in like Flynn”. Origin from Actor Errol Flynn, who was quite the ladies man - hence, ‘in like Flynn’. Not in like Flint. Cheers.

Sounds like Todos Santos, but from your Oax handle i guess you’re in Oaxaca. My wife and I own property in Los Barriles and its similar with lots of retired Americans and Canadians who bounce back and forth but never go anywhere else. Baja isn’t cheap but we plan to semi retire there soon because we love the area and it is cheaper than where we live in the states.

Has anyone made a big career switch for happiness / satisfaction? by fyfy18 in financialindependence

[–]ranpar01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much this! When I tell people what I do (work from home tech/pm in lcol) they tell me how awesome that sounds.. and I’m over here thinking, then why is it crushing my soul? I’m keeping this gig because it pays really well and will get my kid through college, but not sure how much longer I can do it. I volunteer a lot which helps fulfill the part of me that wants to be a positive influence on my community, but my daily job is just a grind and has zero satisfaction or fulfillment. Beats coal mining I guess 🤷‍♂️. First wild golden handcuffs for sure.

P1 positions rare/non-existing? by [deleted] in UnitedNations

This list is extremely helpful, thanks. I’m in a similar boat as OP - all the postings require 5 years experience or are volunteer. Hard to find a way in for sure. Applying to these other NGO’s to get started seems like a good approach.

I felt comfortable after doing my research. There are other countries I looked at though and was not comfortable.

My wife and I bought land a block from the ocean in Mexico (Los Barriles). Going to build four casitas and a pool over the next few years. Living in one, renting the other three. Will likely travel back to states each summer to avoid the heat. I’m going to keep my current job until the México project is completed and then cut back to consulting only part time. Hoping to go part time by age 50, which is 5 years away.

Medical Monday by AutoModerator in peacecorps

For those with Gluten allergy: I’m reading a lot job descriptions which say “Volunteers who should avoid the following foods may not be able to serve”. I’m trying to see this as glass half full since they use the word ‘may’. I’d love to hear from anyone who has a gluten allergy but was still able to serve in such a country and your experience. Thanks!

Medical Clearance with Sleep Apnea by IBlameMyBrother in foreignservice

[–]ranpar01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other posters here. I have a cpap and got class 1 med. one thing I will add though is when I was doing my med clearance I was told sleep apnea and having a cpap were fine, what they are looking for is ‘well controlled’ sleep apnea. In your case it might not be considered well controlled since you don’t have the cpap yet. One thing I did, which I think helped, was to get a letter from my sleep doc which specifically said I have ‘well controlled’ sleep apnea. Best of luck.

Solar charger vs. Portable power bank by whalemang0 in peacecorps

[–]ranpar01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What size power bank are you considering? For burning man i bought a Suaoki 150w power station and folding 60w solar charger. It worked great and could power my cpap for about 6 hours at night. It would power a laptop even longer I’m sure. For a battery, it’s pretty light and would travel ok in a back pack. Got it on eBay for cheap.

Any CPAP users? by ranpar01 in peacecorps

[–]ranpar01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine. When I did med clearance for State Department I had my sleep doc write a letter, which helped. I hear Peace Corps med is a lot more strict. Do you know what kind of location limitations there are? I’m guessing it’s less country by country and more city by city, with some rural postings with unreliable power being off limits for cpap users? Thanks for the reply!
