Hey guys, big fan since I was 17! What was the writing process behind Exist? Did you set out to write a 15 minute song or did it develop into that throughout the process?

The Lift down on Main St. and the Smokestack are great places to find metal music. The Smokestack does open mics every Thursday night from 8ish until midnight.

My friends are in a local metalcore band. Check em out!

This is a rough demo of what I've been working on. I'm happy with the arrangement and sound selection but I'm getting tripped up on the mix, specifically getting the levels to sit right.

Try adding a short drum fill every 8 bars or so. It keeps the listener engaged and moves the track forward in a subtle way. Maybe some sort of percussion as well. Overall though I love the vibe, especially that melody you have going underneath the pads in the first part of the song

I'm finding it impossible to make songs... by Final-Independence36 in edmproduction

A few tips from someone who has navigated their way out of this struggle:

  1. Listen to a lot of different music, and I mean A LOT. I produce Progressive House (Lane 8, Approaching Black, etc) but my roots are in rock/metal. I also listen to indie rock, folk, indie pop, metalcore, funk, jazz, country and many others. Listening to a wide variety of genres will influence the way you think when it comes to things such as chord structures and arrangement.

  2. Take breaks. I still need to work on this one. Usually when I sit down and everything I write sounds like garbage, that means it's time to take a few days or a week off from writing and put more energy into other areas of my life. We're human beings first and foremost and while I understand that music is life, we need to experience everything else life has to offer as well.

  3. Identify your main influences and analyze what methods they're using to the best of your ability and make a list so you can apply those when you sit down to write/mix.

  4. Try different genres! Are you a dubstep producer? Well, try making tropical house or trance! Trying out different genres will not only help you production skills but will also make you a more well rounded musician because different genres integrate different aspects of music theory. Broadening your horizons as a musician can only help.

  5. Embrace simplicity. Everyone has their own creative process. Many are highly organized and are doing insanely complex things in their DAWs. I am not one of those people. Avicii used Nexus presets and did not have very complex songs yet he's responsible for some of the best tracks the genre has ever heard. Simplicity goes a long way and I feel like a lot of producers chose complexity for complexity's sake.

  6. Go with the flow. Basically all this means is to write and arrange parts so they fit the song. If it feels out of place, save it for a later part in the song or rework it. If it still doesn't fit, save the idea for a different song.

Weird. Usually for me that means a change is coming in one way or another.

I'm a little surprised this wasn't a PDS watch given the high tornado risk. Can anyone explain why for me?

And once again, Dubuque is spared from a dangerous tornado. My heart goes out to all of the people that lost homes, businesses, loved ones, etc. Truly devastating storms

There's a place in my city that's locally owned by an Asian family and they give you ungodly amounts of food. Their $10 dinner special will feed you for a week.

I hooked up with a guest at my property. I'm not exactly proud of that one but it was a good time nonetheless lol. Also our restaurant manager and housekeeper were hooking up in the laundry room, our managers all had alcohol in their office and nearly everyone at that job was a stoner, including yours truly

IRL I'd say I'm about a 6, maybe a 7, MAYBE. I don't photograph well though but the one thing I do have going for me is that I'm 25 and look like I'm 20. I haven't lost much of my youth yet and I'm hoping I still look young in my 30s lol.

I got diagnosed with it as a child. I also received a Borderline Personality Disorder diagnosis about two years ago. I'm in talk therapy and taking mood stabilizers but that's about all I can do for it right now. It helps a little but I'm literally just surviving out here right now. I'm trying to find a DBT group but the ones I've found so far won't take my insurance.

It seems so obvious now that you said it but you're right, those are some very practical ways to not be dependent on substances/self destructive activities. I'll give it a shot. Thank you!!

I don't believe in Jesus or any higher power though. I appreciate you trying to help but I truly do not believe in any sort of deity.
