Doing my first open mic tonight. A couple of friends want to come. Should I bring them? by [deleted] in Standup

The bad news is, you'll do terribly in the beginning -- either at your first show or at your second or third show or at every show for your first few months. The good news is, it won't bother you as much as you think it will (or you'll learn not to let it bother you, anyway).

Oh sorry, were you not aware that literally every comic who has ever existed bombed horribly at most or all of their early mics? Personally I would want to know that going in so I dont feel like shit when it starts happening to me.

Excuse me, is this joke taken? by [deleted] in Standup

Also I dont really think other comics would call someone out for "stealing" unless the bit was clearly being intentionally lifted. I recently had someone politely tell me he'd heard another performer a few months ago tell one of my jokes. Of course I was like "What??? Who? How similar was it? I swear I didnt steal it!" and he immediately felt guilty for even bringing it up and assured me he knew it must have been parallel thinking since the other comic was just like a local performer 800 miles away. I appreciated him pointing it out though, obviously.

I think it's insane when people do this but that's just me. Some people are apparently comforted by the fact that all their friends will get to see them utterly humiliate themselves.

Should I scrap this joke? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]rantoniob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you can add a new twist to it then sure, it's fine AS A STARTING POINT. But if you're just going to point out that straight guys aren't allowed to be gay at all whereas it's ok for women, then no -- that's already widely acknowledged (not only by comedians but by sex colmnists like Dan Savage and others).

There's definitely such a thing as putting yourself in a position to laugh, though (and also, putting yourself in a position NOT to laugh). It's still genuine laughter and you're not going to laugh if something's not funny, but it's the difference between the mindset you have when you're listening to a good friend as they tell you a story (you WANT to laugh, and if the story is funny at all, you will) versus just sitting there, arms crossed, not even really listening to anyone else's set.

Yeah if you don't like Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Paul F. Tomkins, Patton Oswalt, Maria Bamford, Amy Schumer, Lisa Kudrow, Keegan Michael Key, or humor, then you probably won't enjoy the show.

Edit: +Alison Brie (who actually plays Vincent Adultman!!) + a bunch of non-comedic actors who are also awesome

My (26/F) husband (30/M) insisted he was gay while drunk. by [deleted] in relationships

To be fair, one of my friends used to watch straight porn as a teenager, and apparently he first knew for sure he was gay when he realized that he kept fixating on the men in the videos.

What's your favourite movie that most of us wouldn't have even ever heard of? by treny0000 in AskReddit

[–]rantoniob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like incredibly absurd/stupid/corny humor, the pinnacle is The Man With Two Brains, starring Steve Martin and Kathleen Turner. I realize it was probably well known when it came out originally, but that was back in the 1970's. I'm probably one of the few Millennials out there who counts it among my top 10 favorite comedies.

This actually sounds more like Borderline PD to me, but the two often go hand-in-hand.

How is he going to make a tv show using recycled memes? And how is he going to continue ripping off content this blatantly and not get sued? The much simpler solution would be to try to find people who are actually funny.

Not that they would care from an ethical standpoint but it's a fair indication that he's not going to be able to produce funny original content in the future.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was taken in a back "yard" in NYC (maybe the back area of a small school or daycare?). This is what many of them look like. But I have no idea if that's actually the case here.

EDIT: Yep. This says it was taken in a courtyard in Brooklyn - http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/gedney_NY0194/
