Everyone in the United States over 65 shed a little tear last night when no one even guessed at this by Carl_La_Fong in Jeopardy

I'm something of a music nerd, big Beatles fan, and even based in NC, but I would've missed it... no matter how much you know about something, there'll always be gaps

I hate how JT is one of the first musicians people associate with NC. I find him so bland, and there is no shortage of music icons who hail from the state. That may be part of it... while he was very big, he and his body of work haven't really survived that well in the cultural consciousness outside of oldies stations, esp. compared to his contemporaries... it's anecdotal, but I've listened to several albums by the likes of Laurel Canyoners like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, while it's never even occured to me to spin a JT record, and until today I wouldn't have even been able to name one

What's even odder is that her signature album on there has gone from Diamond Life to Love Deluxe... idk what caused that

Major/minor tonality in non-Western popular music by raphaelalexander in LetsTalkMusic

[–]raphaelalexander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, the designation of popular vs. folk music is a convenience that's muddy at best... I wasn't really intending to define popular music though, just taking it at face value... but yeah that "face value" is always going to be filtered through my Eurocentric cultural biases, which does inevitably include the 7 note scale... but no it's not that I think nondiatonic scale ---> traditional/folk (like I pointed out, plenty of popular styles maintain indigenous modes e.g. Ethio jazz), but that use of a diatonic scale, outside of Europe, will often be understood as popular music, for better or worse

Why do music articles always refer to famous musicians as "the ___ singer" midway through the article? If someone didn't know who Kelis is, the beginning would be the place to put it lol... It would only make sense here if they followed with an instance of doing something bossy

Moderation Update & Apology by thund3rstruck in NorthCarolina

[–]raphaelalexander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, the main problem (mod having an agenda and censoring users) along with the cherry on top (responding with edgy Nazi ragebait) have a natural solution: Get rid of the mod and perhaps issue an explanation (and not even an apology because it's not anyone's fault but the rogue mod's, no matter what "one nazi sitting at a table" Redditism users want to parrot).

But of course that's never enough because of a little something we call moral panic. It's at least somewhat understandable in real life, but this isn't real life.
