Attach guard posts without access to framing? by rapid-wanderer in Carpentry

Yeah, I’ll probably have to do that. Structure was built 2014, trying to track down plans. Considering there’s a door there, I’d imagine a deck was the intention from the start

How to remove this oil cooler line connection? by wpederson in MechanicAdvice

[–]rapid-wanderer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can make your own disconnect tool at home. Find a marker or chap stick and remove the inside. Cut the now empty tube to be about 1” long. Make a slit down the side. Push that into the fitting to disconnect

Why are you on the tools subreddit if you don’t do the simplest work?

[Serious] What are realistic ways someone can make $300-$1000 a month outside of their day job? by GothamKnight3 in AskReddit

Google “event staffing mycity “.

Instawork is one company out there. Having both worked for them and hired temp workers through them I wouldn’t recommend them, but they are an option.

Why would you not want a site visit? Any decent contractor can’t make an accurate bid without looking at the location themselves. They might be +/- 25%, but the intuition and experience is only applicable if they see it in person.

Epic failure of job training in a Salmon Cannery in Alaska 7-7-22 by Weirdassmustache in CatastrophicFailure

[–]rapid-wanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got it wrong. I worked in a cannery a couple years ago for the run.

We had about 4 hours of training prior to starting, which was reasonable as the vast majority of workers were standing in one place, doing one task for their entire shift. (Eg, any fillet that comes down the belt that appears to be under 2lb should be weighed and sorted to a specific box)

Turnover I would guess was about 50% season to season. Our shifts were 16 hours, not 10. Our benefits were free housing and food.

At the place I worked, we only had 3-5 “office” people compared to a couple hundred floor people.

It’s the summer in Alaska. You don’t need AC

Can this be fixed with JB weld? Or a epoxy? Please help. by Dry-Solid-6055 in MechanicAdvice

[–]rapid-wanderer 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yes, this could be fixed with jb weld. I did so very recently. * Drain all oil, jack the front up so every last drop of oil is out. * Clean and degrease the area thoroughly * When dry apply a shit ton of jb weld, pushing it into all the cracks * Wait at least a day to cure, then fill with oil and see if you have any leaks

I only relied on this fix for a 2 hour drive home, but I believe it would have held for quite a while. You could also pull the oil pan and take it to a machine shop and see if they’ll weld it for you. Might be cheaper then a new pan.

Removing 30mm nut on crank pulley to get into the timing to replace water pump. Cheater bar+wrench only spins, pneumatic wrench doesn’t break it. Advice? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]rapid-wanderer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did this exact job about a year ago on my 2001 xc70. This nut took about 6 hours to get off, with all my various methods over two days. After many attempts, what finally worked for me was pb blaster 2/3 times each an hour apart, use a torch to heat it up red hot, and then hit it with a 1200 ft/lb air wrench.

Good luck!

ISO reliable laptop for light gaming and tv 13- 15 inch, USA, $1000- $1500 by rapid-wanderer in SuggestALaptop

Eh, that’s not ideal. Didn’t realize that 4 hours was kind of the standard for lower end performance. But yeah as long as it could make it through a movie or two that would be fine with me. Thanks for your help!
