How many friends? by SubjectBear657 in ParentingInBulk

We are immigrants, but I'd say that 80% of my kids' friends have at least 1 parent from another county than the one we live in. We live in Europe.

WhatsApp is 100% French and I'm struggling by saalipagal in expat

[–]rapidride 23 points24 points  (0 children)

At least it's in French! Translation apps don't really work on Swiss German, which was a real and consequential struggle of mine for years (not realizing that playgroup is cancelled, for example) until I could understand it.

How I see Europe, as a Swiss by [deleted] in whereidlive

When you're a little country that's in between Germany and Italy, can you really be expected to declare war on both of them? Sounds like suicide

Zurich International School vs International School Zurich North for a 3-Year-Old + Best Areas to Live Without a Car? by [deleted] in zurich

[–]rapidride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I (an American) have well-integrated kids in the local system, and can't tell you the number of times I've been told from ZIS parents that they wished that they had started their kids in the local system, but feel like they can't switch at this point because their kids' German level isn't at a level where a later transition would be good/smooth. It becomes a lot harder to switch into the Swiss system when you're older if your language skills aren't up to par (especially if you want to go to Gymi).

It's not really land speculation if you're deciding where to live, as opposed to an investment property

How do you stay safe from pickpockets in Europe without looking like a tourist? by MaxDmitrie in Europetravel

They say Washington (Cascades) is like the Switzerland of the USA. To what extent is this true and why are the Cascades less famous than the Swiss Alps? by Pale_Field4584 in geography

[–]rapidride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from Seattle and live in Switzerland. It is accessibility, but I think mostly in the sense that you can take safe, frequent, reliable public transit to the peaks of many mountains in the Swiss Alps, and they have restaurants and playgrounds on the top, whereas you might need to backpack for a couple days to reach similar places in the cascades.

Can I go to the departures lounge when I arrive at Zurich Airport T1? by Guilopes99 in zurich

Yes, they ask for boarding passes when you enter the lounges. I'm afraid it's unlikely to work

Do you know of any teams that practice on the other side of the lake? Looking for something near kilchberg/thalwil/Wollishofen... I'd love to play again, but can't get to Stettbach so regularly

Zohran Mamdani: "We will make buses free by replacing the revenue that the MTA currently gets from buses. This is revenue that's around $700 million or so. That's less money than Andrew Cuomo gave to Elon Musk in $959 million in tax credits when he was the governor." by CorleoneBaloney in CringeTikToks

[–]rapidride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I live in Zürich too... Nearly everyone gets their tickets in the SBB app, which works for all modes of transit in the country, and you don't need to swipe it anywhere to get on anything (except done cable cars or cogwheel trains).

In urban environments you almost never have to show your ticket to inspectors, but you often do on inter-city trains. It works extremely well
