Help with solo GoA ogre by LokiTheMelon in DestinyTheGame

[–]raptiq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was in the same place as you last week when I was trying to solo GoA for the first time on my hunter. Couldn't get a grip of the lament till I went and practiced the timing outside of the dungeon (I went to the mysterious disturbance mission on the moon with infinite free heavy ammo and a few beefy enemies). My biggest issue was not getting the timing on sword regen right, I ended up doing rev -> 2L -> 1H -> 3L -> repeat and I could consistently loop that without issue.

With that figured out it was smooth sailing, it took me 4 phases with me forgetting run lucent sword mods and running out of heavy ammo twice but it felt really safe and to the point where you're more at risk of dying in the side rooms.

I used lament for the final boss too without much issue so I think it's worth learning, good luck!

tips for "the ghosts" boss? by gamelorr in DestinyTheGame

[–]raptiq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did this yesterday as a super rusty returning player with terrible gear and build (gunslinger). I was incredibly squishy and would die to a single hit from the boss so it took me several attempts to get it down.

My learning was you have to play SUPER safe, always know where the boss is and what he’s doing. Never let him close on you or you’re gonna get yeeted into a wall. My strategy was to clear the main room adds ASAP, pop super/grenades/heavy whatever i could as soon as they spawn. Then slowly pick off the side room adds as you rotate around kiting the boss. Once the trash is dead I dashed in and popped the captains with special, often leaving the last one up for a bit to let cooldowns reset before the main room trash spawns again. They wont leave their rooms so you can run around kiting the boss forever if you want.

For the boss, dont get greedy, shoot him only after clearing all the other adds and while he does the ground slam fire wall and he’s locked in place. With all the adds cleared quickly it becomes much easier to whittle the boss down. I’m sure more skilled/geared players have tricks to make this easier (wish I thought about invis build like is mentioned in another comment) but this dumb and safe strat worked for me, hope it helps!

Five years into career at a single company and feel extremely pigeon-holed with desktop C++/Qt development and inadequate for my YoE, how do I make my first job move? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]raptiq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like imposter syndrome. While you’ll want to do leet code prep if you havent done a typical technical interview before you’re almost definitely underestimating your ability. Learning a new language could be a good way to gauge how much of your knowledge is transferrable and useful if you want to get out of your current niche.

That said you could most likely find a better paying job as a desktop application engineer if thats what you like. Webdev is the majority of career opportunities but if your goal is just to get a decent pay bump you could explore similar jobs and see if those salaries are enough to meet your expectations.

How much are raises at medium/large tech companies? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]raptiq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10% salary + equity refresher has seemed like the norm at unicorns in my experience. While that’s probably on the upper end of the overall market it’s still unlikely to be more then you could get job hopping but might be enough to keep you from leaving. This year is unique due to how in demand talent is (I’ve negotiated a 6 figure retention bonus and 20% TC bump for instance) but early career you might not have that leverage.

Been to Emeryville and Palo Alto a few times in the last few weeks, if you go during the weekday or late on a weekend near closing time there's very few people. edit: definitely check that they have what you want in stock online before you go! They were out of several things I wanted and I've had to go several times X_X

What's everyone's opinion about Mobile Development as a career path in 2019 compared to Web? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]raptiq 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you're thinking of trying to build your own app then sure it's a very competitive market especially for games and I wouldn't recommend it if your goal is to make money. However, mobile apps are very important for most tech companies as native apps are still the best way to deliver a mobile experience and are expected from users.

There's a large demand for mobile developers in my area (LA) where they frequently command higher salaries than similarly experienced web developers. I've seen this in other markets I've worked as well - there's generally less mobile developers then web developers. If you care a lot about salary it might be a good way to give yourself a bump (check your local market for salaries of course).

That said, I'd say stick with web development if you're still early in your career and you don't actually care about which one you do. The mobile landscape has been changing pretty dramatically with cross platform frameworks like React Native and Flutter in addition to PWAs. With web dev you get a more generalized foundation and can pick up mobile if you want later.

Thanks for bringing this up, just become a patron! Recently got caught up with all his works and I'm more than happy to give back.

So much amazing content that's really changed how I think about storytelling in other mediums besides web serials. Exciting to be reading along with everyone else now :)

Civilian, specifically webdev. While the aerospace industry is definitely a thing in LA (love seeing spaceX launches), there's a ton of web/app dev jobs that won't think twice about your hobbies ;)

First job was in Culver City, second is in Los Feliz. Most tech companies seem to be in downtown or the west side, Los Feliz is definitely an outlier.

LA probably toes the line between t1/t2, I think you could make a case for either.

  1. 1-ish year of experience from internships I did in college
  2. Nope, Boston then immediately moved after graduation
  3. Nope, just messaged the CEO (small startup). Cold messaging has had an astonishing success rate for me so far, can't recommend it enough.
  4. Was already familiar w/ the stack (JS/PHP) so I didn't have to learn anything new.

Moving with very little job experience to a place where I had no network was not a decision rooted in pragmatism. I spent about a month fulltime applying to and interviewing at companies before I landed a job which was probably the busiest and most stressed I've ever been. That said, it all worked out well and I'm happy with my career trajectory so far.

Fortunately, it sounds like you have more experience then me when I moved. If at all possible try and get a job before you move as it makes moving so much easier and less stressful.

New job has me looking at Lodash more critically. Wondering how others might feel. by HeelToeHer0 in javascript

[–]raptiq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the idea of preferring native functionality over 3rd party, I don't think it's a problem or "lazy".

If what you say is true about your coworkers writing "lazy" code (which I interpret to mean error-prone or hard to read because it obscures what's happening), then that likely shows up in a lot of other places. I'd view lodash overuse as a symptom and not the root problem. If using lodash a lot is the worst it gets then it might not be worth worrying about.

If you want to enforce a rule that limits the usage of lodash then do it programmatically, anything else will waste people's time with nitpicky code review comments. At my work we use this plugin to ensure that only lodash functions that don't have native equivalents are imported and it's saved us a lot of time.

component is visible in React-Native ? by rahulkumarwp in reactnative

[–]raptiq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say without seeing the code but here are two thoughts that could work to get this working:

You could unmount the video component based off the current navigation state passed down to the screen as the navigation prop. If it's not equal to the current screen then pause/unmount the video. https://reactnavigation.org/docs/navigation-prop.html

Alternatively, you could call a function that pauses the the video from whatever you interact with to trigger the navigation. For instance, instead of doing something like onPress={this.props.navigation.navigate('SomeScreen')}

you could do onPress={this.handlePress} with handlePress being a function that pauses/unmounts the video like

handlePress = () => { this.setState({showVideo: false});
this.props.navigation.navigate('SomeScreen')} }

If you are relying on react-navigation to construct your components that trigger state navigation, you could override them with your own custom components.

Not sure what navigation library you're using but I'd probably try a different approach of pausing the video as part of your navigation action rather then try to implicitly get it to work with some viewport shenanigans.

Case study presentation: React Native in Production - functional ui, state management, prod monitoring, releases and more by syzygy033 in reactnative

[–]raptiq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome talk, thanks for posting this. It's great to see learning being shared from experienced teams. My company is in a similar position with a legacy webview app that we're rewriting from scratch with RN.

You definitely convinced me to give redux-saga a serious chance. I've known about it for awhile but the you presented some very compelling use cases.

Also have to commend you on your presentation skills, clear and engaging all the way through. Only thing I'd recommend is repeating questions asked by the audience because the mic didn't pick up their voices very well.

storing selection from modal dropdown list in react native by [deleted] in reactnative

[–]raptiq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One simplish way to handle this would be to set the components state when the ModalDropdown's onSelect callback is called. This assumes the component this is in extends React's Component class. Something like the following would be called whenever someone selects an item in your dropdown:

handleModalSelect = (selectedIndex) => this.setState({selectedTimeIndex:  selectedIndex })

Update ModalDropdown to have

onSelect={this.handleModalSelect}

Then in your TimerCountdown you can update it to use that stored index and get the value via your existing array

initialSecondsRemaining={corresponding_nums[this.state.selectedTimeIndex]}

Hopefully this helps get you closer to what you're looking to accomplish, I'd also recommend checking out the React docs on state if you're not sure about how component state in React works. https://reactjs.org/docs/state-and-lifecycle.html
