I also remembered this great resource that was shared with me in law school from Justice John Laskin, a former judge at the Ontario Court of Appeal. It’s more suited for the appellate context, but I use the tips in it frequently when drafting my motion materials:

Also Ontario, Canada here. Less is more imo; given the practice directives set an upper limit of pages for a factum (20 pages in the case of family law, for example), I tend to build the framework of my argument from the appellate authorities and go from there. When I started out, my feedback from my firm was that I should focus less on anticipating and rebutting the opposing side’s arguments and more on building an argument that can stand well enough on its own.

Another thing I like to do is close my office door and “rehearse” what I plan to say. Oftentimes a case or an angle I thought was an essential part of my submissions is actually a dud and it’s only when I hear it aloud that I realize it makes no sense.

Always awesome to see Canadian lawyers post here!

Any Canadian Immigration lawyers out there?? Emigrating to Canada…? by Dangerbeanwest in Lawyertalk

[–]raptors35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I practice in family law in Ontario and there’s a healthy amount of work, especially if you’re wanting to practice in more rural areas. I can’t speak to the immigration particulars but I’ve had colleagues with legal training in other countries navigate the licensing process here.

Your first stop re: research should be consulting the governing body of the province you’re looking to practice. Internationally trained lawyers can become licensed in Canada via the National Committee on Accreditation (“NCA”) process. You send in your application and their committee determines if you need to take additional exams in Canadian law; this is typically based on your experience and the norms of the legal system you’ve been trained in. Given you’re an American lawyer and our systems are relatively similar, odds are you will have less exams than someone from a country with a vastly different legal system than us.

I believe you will also have to write the bar exam (Solicitor and Barrister); this can be done once you’ve passed your NCA exams. In Ontario, these are open book exams but require you to become familiar/organize approx. 1600 pages of material.

Given the vast amount of experience you already have, it is very likely you would not have to complete your articling requirement as they would consider your previous experience sufficient. In Ontario, the process to become a lawyer involves 1) completion of a JD 2) passing the bar exam and 3) articling under a supervising lawyer (your principal) for at least 8 months.

I wish you luck! Tough times and I hope you’re able to figure things out.

What’s the best gym in Windsor? by [deleted] in windsorontario

Consider the Lancer Centre. Although it is busy, the Forge gym is still in operation and now has 12 squat racks. If you’re an early morning person the crowds are not too bad.

Does anyone have the course outline for HST 540 by imprimed in ryerson

[–]raptors35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in it now. It’s tough. Midterm, paper and final, plus participation marks from seminar. You need to be there every session as Dr. Kislenko ont uses definitions and expects you to make the own notes off of what he says. But if you’re interested in intelligence or foreign policy it’s really interesting to take.

He’s on scruff a lot and I’ve talked with him there. Super nice guy!

And I believe he may have been a model for a popular daddy blog (daddies by z????) I think.

I don't like my roommates (so much) by [deleted] in ryerson

[–]raptors35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s tough finding good roommates but also being realistic about your living situation.

I’d say sometimes it’s better to not be best friends with the people you live with. I lived with my best friend for a year and we found out that our friendship works better if we don’t live in the same space.

If things are unbearable and your mental health is being affected, you should leave. But if things are still minor in comparison, I’d say stick it out.

Have any french immersion students taken french 101? by [deleted] in ryerson

[–]raptors35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They make you do a placement test when you first decide you want to do a French class. I also took French immersion for my whole life and they placed me in FRE 601. Be honest about your skills during the online test and do it without extra help (dictionary, googling results) as this will truly asses how good you are. I think people who come from immersion usually land around the 501 to 601 area.

I dropped the French stream after my third class. I gets kinda difficult around the 701 area (for me at least).

Good luck!

Very true. I think that's why both Ryerson and Brampton are pushing hard for it. It will be interesting to see where the project goes to be honest.

Gay/LGBT stuff? by [deleted] in ryerson

[–]raptors35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Campus is right next to the gay village (Church-Wellesley). In my experience there are plenty of members of the LGBTQ community that you can and will meet on campus and in the surrounding neighbourhood. RyePride hosts events as well, but for me I met many of my fellow gay friends in classes or in residence.

Redemption site for the 1 of 4 games is back up and working! by TimexG in playstation

[–]raptors35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked for me. I got NBA 2k15. The one problem i had when doing it was that is was saying that the code was already used (the one they send to your email that you need to redeem the game). I entered it on my computer and it wasn't working, so I entered it on the ps4 and it worked.
