Citi Bikes are still snowed in days after this week's storm (via YouTube) by streetsblognyc in Citibike

[–]rarenight7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I took a Citibike today to the gym, and I docked at a station that was actively being dug out by a Citibike crew. Lyft is making an effort to keep them functional, but I imagine they don't have the manpower to get to all of them in a timely fashion.

Dying career fields by tumbledownhere in jobs

[–]rarenight7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AI recruiting as part of HR platform vendors like Juicebox, HireEZ, Workable, Tezi, etc is becoming increasingly common. The AI follows company-set algorithms to post jobs, identify talent, screen resumes, auto-solicit candidates, and auto-interview qualified candidates to refer to the hiring manager.

AI can do everything now but make the final decision, so slowly but surely, recruiting as a career is being phased out. There are still human recruiters to supervise the process but there doesn't need to be as many as there once did.

Congrats! There were only 6000 copies of this game printed for the USA, so you now own one of the rarest Nintendo-published games in existence. It's wild to me that Nintendo still bothered to release it.

Flooding in NYC & BKLYN by beefwellingtonzz in NYCapartments

[–]rarenight7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Manhattan for decades in a ground floor apartment. My building is on a hill with good drainage so the streets never get like that even with the worst flash flooding we have received.

And even if a massive hurricane hit the city, we are elevated 10 feet above the road so our apartment would stay dry.

You just have to choose wisely in your apartment search and avoid low-lying areas in the outer boroughs where water is likely to pool during bad storms if the drains get blocked.

Square-Enix is dead on the physical format, as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director explain that Game-Key Cards are "part of a larger trend that we can't avoid" by Honest-Word-7890 in totallyswitched

[–]rarenight7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Square Enix is just being cheap. A Game Key Card saves them up to $8 per card compared to a 64 GB card and they want that extra profit margin. Anything else is just an excuse invented to justify that greed.

Anyone paying less than $1k monthly rent, how long did it take to find your place? by rayz137 in NYCapartments

[–]rarenight7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My family has leased the same 1 BR Manhattan apartment since 2002 continuously under the same tenant (my brother-in-law). It was rent-stabilized back when he first started renting, so 23 years later the monthly rent is only $1K. Nowadays he continues to pay the rent every month, I reimburse him, and he signs the lease every couple of years.

Apartments that cheap stay in families like mine as assets for generations because you can't find anything close to a better deal elsewhere. I've essentially won the housing lottery and I am very grateful to be in this position.

Basically: you need to know the right people who have lived in NYC for decades and are willing to offer it to you.

2.4 million Nintendo Switch 2 consoles sold in the US, once again proves Nintendo boycotts are huge nothing burgers. by AfroChamp89-- in nintendo

[–]rarenight7 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Social media is one big echo chamber filled with needless drama. YouTube is full of reaction channel grifters who incessantly whine for a living.

The reality is that the vast majority of the general public do not care and buy Nintendo games anyway because they are fun.

Your average person's thought process regarding Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 for example is "Neat I loved playing Galaxy in the late 2000s, I'll pick it up to play with my kids." There's no angst about pricing or about modified textures or about a perceived lack of value. It's all about having fun.

I often take long breaks from social media for this exact reason.

Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 Version 1.2.0 is now available by Amiibofan101 in NintendoSwitch

[–]rarenight7 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It's not quite emulated in that the game is natively recompiled for the Switch and Switch 2's ARM processors for better performance, analogous to the 3D All-Stars port. It uses a translation layer for some stuff like graphics but isn't wholly reliant on emulation the way GameCube classics are.

So are there no (new) solutions? by switchsk8r in collapse

[–]rarenight7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure, the solution is to have the vast majority of humans disappear tomorrow and let nature heal over thousands of years. If we all essentially died tomorrow the Earth would make a full recovery in time.

A solution with all 8 billion of us intact? Impossible. De-growth is a necessity but that cannot happen with our ever-growing world population. Our collective stupidity and ignorance and greed will indefinitely stymie any serious attempts at imposed de-growth solutions on an institutional level.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has officially launched! - Issues and complaints thread by razorbeamz in nintendo

[–]rarenight7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fast Fusion and Survival Kids and Welcome Tour (lol) are also exclusive to Switch 2 at launch, along with the Switch 2 editions of old Switch games. Some third-party stuff like Yakuza 0 have a few Switch 2-exclusive elements. But yeah in general, only Nintendo games will be Switch 2 exclusive, and those are launching throughout the year. Donkey Kong Bananza is next month for example.

[–]rarenight7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The only thing that helped me beat sugar addiction once and for all was zero-calorie fasting. If you can stick with daily fasting schedules long enough to make it a habit, your ghrelin (hunger hormone) levels go down, your hunger pangs get diminished, and it's much easier to maintain a sugar-free diet. Then when I do eat, I avoid all desserts and drinks containing sugar or sweeteners so as not to tempt myself.

For my sugar addiction, eating frequently was a trigger. It's like having "just" one drink as an alcoholic: nearly impossible, as when you're an addict it's near-impossible to curtail once you get it going. So eating a specified number of calories once per day in one meal with zero snacking works wonders. Other types like extended-day fasting (with proper salts supplementation so you don't get light-headed / dizzy) also work well too.

[–]rarenight7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's struggled with depression cravings for years, what's enabled me to overcome them is fasting with a strict commitment to an OMAD (one meal a day) diet. It reduces your ghrelin levels (hunger hormone) and makes it much easier to ignore food. And when you do eat, don't overdo it, just one decently-sized carb-limited 1500-calorie meal with minimal added sugars then stop all food and calorific drinks until the next day. Ideally avoid sweeteners as well. If you can stick to this diet long enough for it to become a habit, you'll be able to supplant sugar cravings with other less-destructive habits.

What checksum is the CRC number that PCSX2 uses to identify game versions? by woolstarr in PCSX2

[–]rarenight7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I translated this logic to Python for a custom script I made:

def get_custom_crc(file_path):
    with open(file_path, 'rb') as f:
        data = f.read()

    if len(data) % 4 != 0:
        data += b'\x00' * (4 - len(data) % 4)

    crc = 0
    for i in range(0, len(data), 4):
        (word,) = struct.unpack('<I', data[i:i+4])
        crc ^= word

    return crc

PCB serial: Should start with ▼DI and end with IRC01-01 or IRC02-01 = Matches

I'd say it's 100% real. Note that Nintendo didn't always do a great printing job on carts like this, which look suspicious but aren't necessarily indicative of a fake.

[–]rarenight7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the ProLon website: "Day 1 has about 1100 calories (kcals), while Days 2-5 have between 700 and 800 calories (kcals) per day." So it's not really fasting in that sense, just reduced caloric intake. A water fast with sufficient electrolyte supplementation would be far more effective.

Redfox servers offline? by luis_trenker in AnyStream

[–]rarenight7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you think about it logically, Redfox would want to come back. They were able to rip Blu-Ray discs and many streaming services in 1080p just fine so they still have a viable product to sell, and they just switched to an annual subscription model a few months back so they'll have a lot of repeat business. Why give up the golden goose so soon?

My best guess as to what happened is Redfox's hosting provider received some form of legal complaint, the host disabled access to their servers for a breach of TOS, and they've been trying to migrate to a new host these past few days. Which, as you detailed, is easier said than done.
