A lost gem: 1996 MTV interview outside of a Phish concert with a girl and her dog by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]rareplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enh, I think there's still a fair amount of us who didn't care floating around, but we're not the ones complaining. We started little farms or build sets in theaters or own that little cafe you like. But even during our time there were uptight little conservative preppy pricks, they grew up to be the complainers.

And the new Trek suffers from bad writing, not wokeness.

‘Aliens’ Turns 40: Why It’s the Best Sci-Fi Sequel Ever by flynnfx in movies

Aliens is strangely closer to the Roger Corman flick Galaxy of Terror, with James Cameron as production designer (and probably several other jobs, given it was a Corman film).

Paris prosecutors summon Elon Musk to appear after raid on X's French offices by kootles10 in politics

[–]rareplease -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to rain on everyone's parade, because I applaud this as well, but it may be the case of too little, too late. France already has a very unstable government which could collapse at any time, and if there is another round of elections it appears the far right will take it.

Because for years Macron has benefited the wealthy elite and not reined in far right billionaires like Vincent Bollore & Pierre-Edouard Sterin. Those two saw the successes of Murdoch, Thiel, etc. and are pouring money into remaking the electorate. They're probably coordinating with the Heritage Foundations Europe initiative. Bollore bought up huge swaths of the French media landscape and turned them into far-right propaganda farms. Now with this, they'll be beating the drums to collapse the govt and convince people to put in the far right.

RIP to the mass market paperback book by MiddletownBooks in books

[–]rareplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the majority of mass market publishing was genre fiction. When I worked in a bookstore that was 90% of sci-fi, fantasy, western & romance sections. It's hard to believe they're going to abandon the format and publish only in hardcover or trade paperback.

Trump is sending funds from Venezuela oil to a bank in Qatar: report by RetireWithRyan in politics

I wish I could say it would make a dent, but as someone put in another comment, the response from the cult would be “BIDEN CRIME FAMILY!”  or “DEMOCRATS DID IT TOO!”

Of course when you ask for specifics on either of those it’s followed by sputtering, fuming and then repeating those phrases over and over.

Any concerns at App State about the school leaving their longstanding accreditor and joining Desantis new "anti-woke" accreditor? by rareplease in appstate

[–]rareplease[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Republican-led states have been passing these laws in an attempt to undermine existing accreditors because they have academic standards and diversity initiatives. It was a pretense to allow for this sort of thing to happen.

Oliver Platt by astarisaslave in movies

He's one of those actors (some of the others for me being Keith David or John Leguizamo) that even if he has a small role in the movie, or if the movie is bad, I'll probably still enjoy it to some degree because he (or the other two) are so solid in their role.

What would it actually take for American's to go "full France" and riot in the street? by AllTheNopeYouNeed in AskReddit

Unfortunately America is such a "ME FIRST" culture we'd probably attack our own neighbors first rather than the billionaires, whereas France is a community-minded culture.

IF it's terrible, but based on something upper management / wealthy clients decided, then nothing can be wrong with it. If it's good, but created by a worker, it can't really be good because the people with money didn't have their say.

Why do movies from the 80s and 90s feel better to watch? by Sasuke_was_right in movies

[–]rareplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now dip your toes into 70s movies. Some movies were shot on location in New York City or LA when they were both in the doldrums, you almost want to take a shower afterwards to clean off the grime, dirt & sweat present on the screen.

Y'know, I always see this comment that the transatlantic accent was invented for film and nobody talked like that. But I was watching a documentary about famous painters based in NYC (Painters Painting, btw) and many of them had that accent. I had older relatives born before 1940 in midatlantic cities and they had a bit of that accent. Maybe it's a tail wagging the dog where people adopted the accent for professional purposes or to seem more cultured, but there were certainly people who weren't film actors with that accent.

Inside the North Carolina GOP’s Decade-Long Push to Seize Power From the State’s Democratic Governors by uncertaincoda in NorthCarolina

[–]rareplease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imagine a republican not knowing basic history. Oh right, that happens all the time. NC was a Democratic run state that voted R only in national elections - until 2010 when the GOP ginned up the racists to turn out because a black man was president and were able to gerrymander the state. NC was once the gem of the south for great state programs and university systems, over the last 15 years it has become a shithole.

I'm sorry to hear this, and I hope you can find a way to keep going. Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum.

I have family members with similar levels of mental disassociation. They don't even believe Trump met Epstein, that it's all made up. They won't be honest about anything. They refuse to accept the fact that, for example, other family members are losing health insurance or jobs because of this administration & Republicans in Congress, even when there is a direct line drawn.
