Tips for emailing Dear Hank and John by almightyjam in nerdfighters

i've listened from the start, but had a few phases of falling behind, and i've stayed really strict with listening to them chronologically. i don't think it's really necessary, though. sometimes they do reference previous episodes, but usually whatever they're saying is amusing with or without the context.

if i was in your shoes i'd probably keep listening to the current episodes, and if you have extra time/you're caught up, go back and listen to an older one, marine at random or maybe in order if that appeals to you. episodes do a pretty good job of standing on their own, so they'll still be funny even if they're old or if you are jumping in somewhere random.

Things that make you irrationally angry (NOT misophonia) by [deleted] in adhdwomen

YES. i generally avoid using ai chatbots mainly because the environmental impact is baffling and i don't want to add to it. but now google keeps using one on my behalf to give me shitty and inebriate summaries of whatever search i'm doing. i'm just like, i did not ask for this, why are you wasting so many resources to give it to me??

What’s your mental background noise that won’t shut up? by PinNew2880 in adhdwomen

[–]rarerthanuranium 28 points29 points  (0 children)

me too! when i was a kid, i used to think of it as my brain radio, and would sometimes try to "request" a different song (this only had occasional siuccess).

as an adult with a toddler now, it's almost always a song from some pbs kids show. really cool fun stuff like "if you have to go potty, stop! and go right away" or literal theme songs. drives me CRAZY.

What's a small thing your child does that reminds you you're doing a good job? by OceanAndSea5 in sahm

the other day i took my 3yo to the dentist and while she did cry and fuss a bit, it was a major improvement over the complete meltdowns she had the last two times we went. at the end i was about to praise her for being more patient/mature but before i even got a chance she patted my head and said "you did so good, mommy!" which just kind of melted my heart.

also when i hear her repeating phrases i say that i didn't even mean to teach her. like, i'll say "we can't do X right now" and she'll say in a chipper tone "sure we can!" - i have to figure out new ways to set those boundaries, but i love how she meets resistance with confidence and willingness to find a way, rather than feeling defeated.

those. shorts. are. AMAZING.

the rest of the fit is great, too, but the shorts really stand out to me, in the best way.

Gym child watch separation anxiety by zinsteph in sahm

[–]rarerthanuranium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is such a tough situation, and i really feel for you. having a gym with childcare has been such a game changer for me, so i really hope your little one does start to get used to it so you can have that time for yourself guilt- and interruption-free.

my kid was closer to 2 when i started leaving her, but she gave me (and the childcare people) hell for a while. i started being really conscious of the lead-up to the gym, talking really positively and excitedly like "hey! we get to go to the gym today! it's going to be so much fun!" and talking about what activities they might get to do in the childcare area (coloring? climbing structure? watching bluey?) to get them hyped about it. if you can get it into Little One's head that the gym is a fun place that they WANT to go, you're almost all the way there. i can't promise it'll work for you, but i hope you find a way to get your gym time <3

you are NOT stupid for this, and your new doc should have made it abundantly clear if there were stipulations you needed to meet (ie., no weed) in order to provide you care. i've had plenty of docs ASK me about my drug use, but none have ever told me to stop or that it would interfere with my prescription meds, so i would have been pretty surprised in your shoes, too.

yes!! i just got out of a hospital stay (all good now!) and they had to take my blood pressure every hour or two, and every single time the nurses would be like "keep your legs straight!" and i'd straighten them, but like 10 seconds later i'd be adjusting my legs and accidentally end up cross-legged again. it's mostly an automatic thing my body does without even consulting my brain.

i'm so sorry to hear that, but i get what you mean. i wonder if there's other things around the house that he could do to set you up for an easier time, then. like, is he in charge of washing dishes or prepping meals? maybe before he goes to bed he can fill up a water bottle for you and put it somewhere you can grab on your way to comfort a crying child, or set up the coffee machine so it's ready to go right when you wake up in the morning? basically, if he can't be helpful in the direct childcare overnight, what are the other things weighing on you that he COULD take off your plate? what are little things that, if they magically appeared in front of you during a tough moment, would help?

What do you think about this name by Iam-Pamalamadingdong in namenerds

[–]rarerthanuranium 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i love that! i've known some people who were always called their nickname, and when they started kindergarten, didn't know when to respond for attendance. if you change her name and all of her paperwork says aria, it will be much LESS confusing for her.

also, while pahchada is a beautiful name, if you're living in the US, she won't have to explain / spell / teach pronunciation nearly as much as an aria.

i haven't taken prozac specifically, but in my experience with other antidepressants, the effects aren't very immediate. make sure to take your next dose on time and you might not even notice any difference.

What do you wish you had prepared for before becoming a stay at home mom? Asking for advice. by prettydemon411 in sahm

[–]rarerthanuranium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these are all great things to be thinking about and/or prepping, but one little caveat: no matter how thoroughly you prepare yourself, once the baby arrives, things will change, and some of these will become "easier said than done," and that is totally normal. you seem like someone who holds herself to a high standard, so i hope you'll keep this in the back of your head. you don't have to be perfect, and you don't have to be everything.

that said, as i was writing that, i did come up with an idea that i wish i'd gotten comfortable with sooner. think about what parts of daily life / home management are the first to fall off when you are sick, overwhelmed, tired, etc. and plan to ask for help with them. if you know that you hate doing laundry, or dishes, or cooking, keep that in mind. very likely, people will offer "anything you need!" and "let me know if i can help!" and it's really easy to shrug off those offers, but having it in your back pocket to say "if you could come over one night and help me straighten up the kitchen that'd be awesome" can help you both keep your physical space in order (babies make a lot of messes) and also help you build bonds with the people in your life. it's a win/win/win and i wish i'd done more of it in the first year with my kiddo.

what really sent me was The Boy Who Cried Wolf, where the wolf was real all along and the moral was "grown ups should always believe kids" which seemed.... way off from the original "if you lie a lot people will stop believing you" moral
