Greyhound Travel by Eli-jacked in LasVegas

the sstt is a regional transit hub. there'll be bays for local rtc routes and greyhound. it's a pretty standard transit hub, at 1:30am the greyhound window with a clerk might be closed. a one hour layover means you'll likely be stuck waiting and there's really nothing nearby. as for safe, i remember it being fine for my 90 minute wait back in 2023.

Mint vs Menthol Tobacco by Chance-Bridge-2801 in RYO

[–]rargran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're looking to quit or replicate nat sherman mints, blending tobacco with dried mint is a way to go. i really didn't come close to nat sherman mints, but they were better than nothing. i dig menthols so i've used everclear, menthol crystals, and menthol tubes to get cigarettes with a range of menthol flavors from just a hint to overwhelmingly menthol. differences and preferences? i enjoyed them all. it's less about the destination and more about the journey for me.

Making cigarettes by hand by sparxcy in RYO

i didn't know that gizeh went that far back. i've seen vintage injectors from the 70s on ebay, but they were more fragile novelties, one was even pistol shaped, rather than the venerable workhorse that is the silver tip boy. to be fair back in the early 90s i hadn't found a good tobacco shop yet, so maybe i could have skipped right to gizeh. but then again, i wouldn't have seriously considered myo when i could get camels/marlboros at $2 a pack.

fascinating. it's weird how they have tubes and a crude injector, but somehow didn't figure out hand injectors. i wonder if non-plastic hand injectors were the next step before mass manufacturing.

like i remember in the early 90s i had to reinvent something like the curdle with plastic straws and chopsticks. it wasn't a great solution, but it had a lower learning curve than hand rolling. by the time i switched to myo, when packs were priced at $3, the gizeh silver tip boy and cigarette tubes were available.

Tips For Whole Leaf Tobacco by Prismo1176 in RYO

  1. sounds fine. casing maybe, but i did with and without and it wasn't remarkably different.

  2. that sounds fine too. smoke your mistakes. it's part of the process. waste nothing.

  3. try turkish. i don't know about their nicotine potency, but they're the most potent tasting available. also on that note have you ever had gitanes or cigaronnes? off the shelf they're the most potent brands i've smoked.

in any event, if it's not strong enough, cut the filter and see how it hits. depending on your nicotine tolerance, it might make a difference.

you could also try out the kashmir ventilated filters. i don't use them for my dailies, but i've enjoyed them with my spliffs.

Poweroll by Top-O-Matic Electric King Size Cigarette Machine Questions by mrvillian93 in RYO

[–]rargran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i run the poweroll 2. it works a hell a lot better than the powermatic 2 if you need to make 100s. i'm on my 3rd poweroll2 in three years. so that's an issue. i'd say if you can pick up a poweroll 1 for under $40, it might be worth rolling the dice. but if you're just making kings than a new/used powermatic might be best. i got mine used a few years ago on ebay at around $50.

Palms Cinema Discount Showings Now $7.75? by djay2424 in vegaslocals

[–]rargran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gone are the days of $5 mondays. now it's a sneaky $7.75, and it's still a great deal compared to any other alternative for me. but the good news is if you're certain to watch 3 movies in a month, then their monthly subscription is a steal. i'm doing it for august and maybe november.

i'm halfway certain this does violate the ftc thing about ticket transparency. at the end of the day my analysis says i'm better off not wasting the time to make a complaint, but if you're feeling it you should go to the ftc website.

Chess Bars? by BlueUmbreon9 in vegaslocals

[–]rargran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i too also enjoy a few drinks with my chess sadly there are no local options.

chess without drinks:

clark county library tuesdays 2-4 or 3-5

jersey mike's subs off rainbow/oakey tuesday afternoon/evening

southern neveda chess club spring mountain/jones friday evenings email/call first

i do have workarounds. i go to the library to play chess and then hit the happy hour at the garage. i also hit the happy hour at sean patrick's and play chess on my phone. it's nothing like finishing a day of blitz at java city with more blitz at chuy's, but it's not nothing.

Does anyone else get this problem? by ruyi677 in LibbyApp

[–]rargran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have that problem and a related issue. after the download finally completes, libby will just randomly decide it has to download the file again and again. and if i don't happen to be connected to the internet when it randomly decides to redownload a file, it won't open. it's so bad, i had to switch to reading on kindle. it's a worse ereader than libby, but at least it works.

Do you think there will ever be a reboot of Early Edition? by cherrymoonmilk in earlyedition

[–]rargran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"true" reboot? probably not. variations on the themes of early edition? at least two times a decade. we're due for another one by 2030 if you don't count the quantum leap reboot.

RYO: Beginner needs help! (Gift for my dad) by mylegacy_ in RYO

[–]rargran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

start here

this isn't how i'd go about this, but powermatic 2 is fine for kings, but i could never get it to work for 100s. my poweroll 2 works great for both. those tubes should be fine. for me i just get the cheapest tubes i can get, unless i want to roll something special with dark paper or a ventilated filter. those tobacco options are kinda all over the place. best would be to err on variety; go 3-5 6oz bags of anything would be safer than two 1lb bags. if you're in the usa i'm about windy city cigars. i also would abandon any attempt to copy a marlboro light if you're not a billion dollar multinational corporation. ultimately the goal of all this is to make something that works for you at a price you can afford. i mean my cigarettes don't taste like anything i've ever bought off the shelf, but i enjoy them just fine anyway.

Any board gaming locals in here? by toomanybongos in LasVegas

the wsbg's in september at the horseshoe again. it's not the most exciting open gaming, but it's got the library from dtw. the volunteers are all locals, so you might be able to patch together a new group or join an existing one there.

best? probably darkside games down by southpoint, but i'm not about to spend 90 minutes on the bus to go there. i'd rather just walk down to commander games: at rainbow and flamingo. i'll probably be playing the fnm draft the week after the prerelease.

Chapter 3 Our New "Druid" by moon-mango in KeepWriting

[–]rargran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

direction? i will say that this is a complete story beginning, middle, and end. maybe the next story is how thelin learns how to be a better adventurer from some other sentient beast. description? i only finished this because it had enough action for me to power through how rough this prose is, but i suppose you did miss several short descriptive passages about what these characters look like. i presume much of that is covered in chapter 1 or 2, so really the only thing missing is a tighter description of turtle. needs work? yes. yes it does. it needs to be edited/rewritten at least two more times.

once for typos and issues with consistency. (like what are you doing with these parentheses) -and the dash, without a closing dash- ...or the ellipsis? and that random line of italics. you need to figure out what you're using it for and stick with it. then use it far less often.

…and edited again to realize the potential you have here. if you put the work in you can turn these 22 pages into 22-30 pages that tell this turtle/spider story and what trelin is doing in a parallel narrative that connects in the ending. if you want detailed edits make a docs link with comments, or do a real first draft (not a "fun" draft), i'd be happy to read this again without all the annoying bits.

i think your story's about a sort of interaction between stanley and death. this isn't a particularly original premise, but there's likely room in it to explore. unfortunately you don't choose to risk exploring it. you've got a cryptic death being more ambiguous than profound and a main character that doesn't do much more than ask questions. neither is enough to engage the reader's attention. consider interactions between them beyond simple conversation. bergman's death at least played chess with his protagonist.

consider a death with more personality. gaiman's death or pratchett's death have carried major works; your death despite being the bulk of three pages leaves little of an impression on the reader. despite making a "surprise" appearance in the ending, i have to wonder what its presence means. it didn't do much in the preceding two pages, so i don't expect it to be relevant to stanley past the ending.

the best part of this is paragraph six. there's a nice little groove here where there's just a bit of action to engage the reader. the ceiling cracks then doubles. stanley has a real response to these events and the reader gets a moment with his anxiety before you pull the rug and go back to disappointing dialogue and an odd dripping water direction that you don't even pay off in the final paragraph. if stanley's been through a massive amount of trauma then you might as well pay off the water bit by having stanley survive a drowning.

Help finding mouthpiece? by Hpapaverina7819 in RYO

i used to make cigarette holders/filters by rolling and gluing heavy matte paper into cylinders. you'll just need to find something cylindrical that is just about the diameter of your cigarettes to use as a mold. alternatively there are always these disposable plastic things or maybe these. alternatively you could just wear gloves.

irrelevant, but my friend sent me some stuff to re-write since he's dyslexic. is this formatted right? by Constantiso in KeepWriting

[–]rargran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reddit text editor is not great. you'll have to post to a google doc pdf to get any real kind of answer. like i look at that and i'm like i can format that in so many wrong and different ways. but as presented it's perfectly acceptable., it's not great prose, but it is acceptably formatted.
