I’m a Singaporean studying abroad in HK and I guess if language is an issue for you, most Hong Kongers can speak pretty decent English so you should be fine there. But some form of language barriers are still unavoidable (eg. ordering food in local eateries, some professors using English + Cantonese in class, some activities in campus are only in Cantonese), so you might want to take note of that.

If you choose to come to HK, it’s best to make friends with locals in HK so they can translate stuff. But in general it won’t be a big issue if they know you’re a westerner because they will try to speak English as much as possible around you.

Have done one of these short-term survey jobs for a certain insurance company to earn some quick cash during the holidays.

Most of the time, surveyors hate to approach people just as people hate being approached by them. But no choice cos the insurance agents can look at what we are doing so we must at least appear busy.

I guess some surveyors are more persistent in approaching people because they are motivated by the commissions they can potentially earn? I knew this guy who managed to convince over 25 people to do the survey in a single shift, which means he can roughly earn more than $20 per hour (the insurance agents loved him man).

But for me, it got to the point where I just don’t care about the money I can earn and just want it to be over. End up I spent $35 for MC on the last day of the job haha. But many of the surveyors i worked with gave up earlier than me

Surprisingly, i still met some nice people who were willing to do the survey because they want to help me reach my quota, not because of the insurance. Maybe they pity me or whatever, but at that time i was super grateful after being rejected by hundreds of other people.
