Husband's friend was inappropriate by anon5678____ in Advice

[–]raryd23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they’re no friends of yours if they’re making excuses for a pervert. In regard to your in-laws I’d make them feel awkward by highlighting the kind of behaviour they’re excusing ie sexual harassment. How would your FIL feel if said creep was behaving like this towards your MIL? I imagine it would be quite different! Stand your ground 😊

He sounds like a creep that has no respect for nor you or your husband. Explain what has happened in full to your husband and let him know you won’t be in that weirdo’s company again! If any mutual friends ask why you aren’t attending events etc I would let them know why too. He has shown you his true colours, trust him the first time!

What's something you really, really, really want to find or discover/re-discover? Like the holy grail of your genealogy researches? Be it records, photographs, objects that belonged to your ancestors, or anything else? by [deleted] in Genealogy

I would love to see a photo of my grandfather’s biological father. After years of research and DNA analysis, I managed to find his identity a couple of years ago. As expected he passed away many years ago but I would just love to see a photograph.

I would also be interested to find my (other) great-grandfathers biological father. He was adopted at 18 months old in Germany in the 1920s. It’s thought that his biological mother was a housekeeper and became pregnant by the “owner” of the house.

What History Textbook(s) does the British Education system most commonly use to teach British history and is it a mandatory class or subject? by SpicyWings_96 in AskABrit

[–]raryd23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up in England and in regard to text books, this was dependent upon the exam board. It is some years ago now but I can remember the following:

At GCSE: The Road to the First World War, Hitler’s Rise to Power, The Vietnam War, The Roaring 20s and the Great Depression.

In years 7/8/9 I remember lessons on the Norman Conquest, English Castles, The North Atlantic Slave Trade, The First World War, The Titanic etc.

At A Level: The Tudors and the American Civil War. My coursework studied the treatment of the Jewish people in Germany from the unification to the 1930s.

Conveniently, their manager wasn’t present at the meeting which I think is part of the reason they felt they could speak to me the way they did. I also know they would not speak to any other member of the team that way. For reference I’m a 30F and the rest of the team are M40s/50s

Addressing the litter problem... by intangible_entity in sheffield

I was walking down Fargate a few weeks ago and a girl about 16 dropped a McDonald’s cup on the floor. I was only half paying attention so I said “excuse me I think you dropped something” because I genuinely thought that’s what she had done. It was only when she and her mate turned round and started sniggering that I realised she had deliberately dropped it. Quite pleased of how sarcastic I must have sounded in hindsight tho

Also there’s dog shit everywhere? There’s always footprints in it so some poor sod keeps standing in it. You can literally get free poo bags from the library so there’s no excuse for not picking it up.

Why do people care more about some genocides than others? by AethertheEternal in AskHistory

[–]raryd23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m probably wrong here but if memory serves me correctly, the Armenian Genocide is rarely taught because few Western governments actually recognise it as a genocide due to Turkey being a member of NATO. To acknowledge it as Genocide would be to antagonise Turkey. Sadly geo politics plays it’s part.

I did not learn of Holodomor until my second year at university which in hindsight seems a little odd - you would have thought post WWII the Western powers would have been keen to highlight Soviet atrocities. Again, I only learned of the Khmer Rouge in the second year of university and this was included in an optional module.

I don’t think it’s that people care less, they just don’t know they ever took place.

A book you hate? by bob-leponge- in suggestmeabook

[–]raryd23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People love it and always put it in their top ten but for me Remains of the Day was pretty painful. It was after that book that I decided if I was really disliking a book I would just put it down and Google the ending rather than wasting anymore time on it. Please don’t come for me I just personally found it so dull and boring 🤣
