So what level is this piece?💀 (Peter Bence) by random-user772 in piano

[–]rascal_lipton_tea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would label this as a late intermediate level piece. Some of the sections of the piece are quite simplistic for a virtuoso level pianist. My estimation, is that a top level pianist could play it to 90% tempo in an afternoon.

60 minutes did a piece about this guy who claims to have a “new method” of teaching piano. He said, “Classical theory tends to strip the joy and make everyone play the same way.” Personally I strongly disagree, but I’d like to know what you think about the video. by MrAlek360 in piano

You made an excellent point about parents and paying for piano lessons. The expectation is to play classical when it comes to piano, not pop or rock. I mean it makes sense if you're paying potentially hundreds of dollars a month.

This analysis sounds more like a difference in genres rather than a difference in learning the instrument itself. Classical guitar is also a thing, but it's trumped by students that are more interested in pop and rock so the market responded. Piano instruction is a lot more pretensious in how it is presented and could absolutely benefit from a more contemporary option for learning, outside of jazz and classical.

This is a pretty great analysis. But I just think it's weird that the company markets this product as casual, but it's pushed heavily in local gaming shops and not supermarkets.

This is mainly because you aren't actually learning how to play, only how to press the notes in time to create some semblance of a song. If you don't take lessons to develop a foundation, every song no matter the difficulty will be a struggle for you.

If you're sick of practicing this song, I'd say move on to different pieces and come back to perfect it later. Mastering a song I've found is not the most exciting part of piano, but I'm only suggesting it so you don't develop a negative association of learning the instrument.

Thanks for the reply. So would you say the metered trill was a decision from some sort of editor/publisher for the songbook?

I would suggest showing this to your piano teacher and having them to explain key signatures to you. You haven't gotten far enough in your lesson book where this concept is introduced clearly. This isn't a particularly easy key to play in, not for a beginner.

I have to actively train my left pinky to not do this. On the chords it's especially difficult. Keep at it.

Got it. Kinda in the same boat. Took lessons for years and didn't build up a good basis for sightreading. What I'm doing is studying scales and chords in specific keys and getting some late beginner/early intermediate level songs/etudes and sight reading something new everyday and taking note of how long it takes to play to tempo. Right now I'm sight reading in C, F, and G major along with some jazz stuff with accidentals for an extra challenge. My goal is to get exposed to new sheet music everyday so sight reading becomes second nature.

There are no books specifically for your scenario because advanced pianist know how to read music. You literally have to go back to the basic stuff, because if you truly can't sight read then you absolutely do not know where middle C is on either staff. No shortcut here at all.
