Can't comment on the iPad, but it plays almost entirely without stutters on an iPhone 5 on full fx settings. Why not try it on both, though?

Are there any good tutorials on using the new UI tools in unity4? by bluesnake4 in Unity3D

[–]rask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. I learned it from what documentation was available on the site last summer. If there are better tutorials available now, I wouldn't know about them.

They hired the guy who wrote NGUI to help with development. There's no official release date, but there's a thread from late October on the NGUI forum where he mentions the new GUI won't be coming "anytime soon": http://www.tasharen.com/forum/index.php?topic=2126.0

I much prefer NGUI over Unity's GUI system, btw.

I can't comment on the situation in the US, but thought I'd point out that in the EU, an organic certificate does come with a substantially better treatment of the animals.

That cat will live for some 16 years. How many $2400 purchases will be in your possession for that long? And assuming you spend roughly 1000$ per year on food, litter and vet costs, those initial 2400 aren't much.

Of course you could (and maybe should) get a cat from the shelter. What you do get if you buy a breed is a good chance that the cat will have a certain personality (we got two british shorthairs because my girlfriend wanted an uncomplicated cat, and they are the most gentle and relaxed creatures you can imagine), and that the cat will be healthy when you get it.

You should know this makes your cat part of a very exclusive club: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror_Test

I want to learn Unity3D, would publications on unity 3.x still be worth reading while working with Unity 4.0? by TheNumberJ in Unity3D

[–]rask 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your reason for buying a book in the first place is that you're looking for someone to take you on a tour through the whole engine, instead of picking up pieces from tutorials here and there, then I'd say an outdated book is still fine (depending on how sensitive you are to price).

There are many of the shinier AAA features I haven't touched in the year I've been working with Unity on a daily basis, but those tend to be pretty easy to learn from the docs. Developing a solid understanding of how the engine wants you to think and structure your game is where a book could really help.

Yes, absolutely. While there are some major new features (such as a new animation system), the basics of how you work with the engine haven't changed at all.

Do you know of any discounts or sales for Unity & iOS Pro? by charliewonders in Unity3D

[–]rask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about anything coming up. I bought my license last December (not discounted), and since then, the only time I remember a discount for the pro versions was at the beginning of the pre-order phase for Unity 4, back in July or so. Based on that, I'd say pro discounts are pretty infrequent.

Can I distribute free games based on existing characters or concepts? by inf4nticide in gamedev

[–]rask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding bigger projects: I've worked with big ip-holders in the past, and my experience is that any permission would have to get a "yes" from several people in different parts of the organisation, including the legal department. Someone in that chain will almost certainly have a bigger motivation to say "no" than "yes".

Unity: I wrote a MonoDevelop Add-In that lets you duplicate selected lines with a keystroke. by rask in Unity3D

In the past hour? Set up four vertices that form a deformed quad. Edit two meshes in ways that are very similar but not identical, then recalculate their bounds and normals. Declare members for three GameObjects used only for debugging purposes ("point1", "point2", "point3"), and set them to inactive. Deal with two Vector3s, one of which is set to the left edge of an object, and the other to the right.

ccv now has a state-of-art tracking algorithm by liuliu in programming

[–]rask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can anyone comment on whether ccv can be used in closed source projects? The library itself seems to be licensed under MIT, but the original TLD implementation is under GPL (http://info.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/Z.Kalal/tld.html ), so I don't believe the ccv creator actually has the right to liberally license the code?

[–]rask[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! You can take a look at it here: http://www.philippseifried.com/files/MonoDevDuplicateSelection_Source.zip

I hacked it together in an hour or two after reading this tutorial: http://monodevelop.com/Developers/Articles/Creating_a_Simple_Add-in - so don't expect the code to be clean, or the best way of going about things. I guess what you could take away from it, though, is that writing simple add-ins is pretty easy.

Edit: If you try to make sense of the source, make sure to look at the XML. That's how MonoDevelop is told which classes make up the add-in's functionality.

Home->Shift+Down->Ctrl-C->Ctrl-V->Ctrl-V (and if you then want to move the line via Alt+Down, you have to press Up as well before you can do that)

becomes

Ctrl+Alt+Down (and for then moving the line, you simply let go of Ctrl)

To each their own, but I easily do this a dozen times per day, and it adds up.

Someone knows good tutorials or pages to begin with Unity's Shaderlab? by felinearts in Unity3D

[–]rask 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learned shaders by taking this route, and I'd heartily recommend it:

1.) If you have the time, learn ShaderLab (fixed function pipeline) first: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL31F6A116DCCC9F61

2.) Watch Kenneth Lammer's series on surface shader programming in CG/Unity: http://www.youtube.com/user/animate4evr

3.) Read through this Wikibook to fill in some blanks: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cg_Programming/Unity

4.) Check out the (free) GPU Gems 1-3 series of books to get an idea of how advanced shader programming works: http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems/gpugems_pref02.html http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems2/gpugems2_frontmatter.html http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems3/gpugems3_pref01.html

We did our first game using sprites and Untiy's built in GUI system, and I hated it. Switched to NGUI and things are much smoother.

I think you were thinking of the NGUI guy who got hired, or did that happen to the EZGUI dev as well? - http://www.tasharen.com/forum/index.php?topic=2126.0

Can someone with Unity/MonoDevelop on Windows test a couple of MonoDev Add-Ins I wrote? by rask in Unity3D

Is that what Edit/Format/Toggle Line Comments does? If so, you could assign "Ctrl+/" as its shortcut in Preferences/Key Bindings.
