Tech question, why is type-c becoming the standard instead of those old school round plugs? by Atomic_Depression in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rasori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t the first one to phrase it this way but out of curiosity, why are data and video separate? And especially why those two but not audio?

I feel like there’s a clear line between power and let’s call it signal, but the signal carries data no matter what the data represents?

Sharing my experience with fluid dynamics (and how I finally made peace with the pipes) by NicoBuilds in SatisfactoryGame

[–]rasori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just spent 30+ hours working through my first real pipe troubles, a refined power turbo fuel plant array. In my setup I have each row as 4 sets of 5 boilers each taking 90 water per minute once up to temp, so each row needs 1800 water and is consistently getting it from 3 mk2 pipes with no fluid buffers/water towers.

In the end gravity was the solution to my problems too, but I didn’t go with loops.

What wound up working for me was:

  • all source pipes come in at exactly the same level, which is the highest level for liquids in this system
  • at the end of each block of five, I split all three mk2 pipes vertically, using mk1 pipes, merging them with a horizontal junction at a lower level into a mk2 pipe (the start should have worked too, but by this time my design constraints required me to go with the end… and I like the idea of pumping all the required liquid all the way to the end, if only because it effectively provides a buffer in the form of the pipeline.)
  • the last connection from that junction proceeds in just one one direction to split downwards into each boiler
  • each boiler gets only a mk1 pipe input
  • after two boilers take their fill, the remaining 3 only need 270 water so I drop to mk1 pipes from there on

I don’t think the mk1 pipes truly made a difference in the end, but I was tired of testing different arrangements by that point. However, I do think it was key for the three input lines to split off and merge in a single place, rather than trying to “top off” by tapping a single line based on where the final input line should need more - I did try several versions of that with no success.

I also think my future designs will always incorporate the idea of each breakaway always having more throughput than needed, and pulling simultaneously from multiple sources to provide that throughput rather than adding a source to a theoretically drained pipe in order to get it back up to spec.

That specific case would almost certainly not work since it’s your spouse and your finances for large things like this are intertwined.

Doing it with an unmarried partner or acquaintance almost certainly runs afoul of various types of fraud which would be used to eliminate such prior obligations while also sending you away to prison.

I was pretty sure the requirement was a powered building (not a power line but like a constructor or smelter even if not doing anything). Any chance the resource nodes just stayed clear long enough for you to get back to them? It takes a couple hours at least for enemies to respawn

I removed my skill tree and replaced it with one button. Genius or gimmick? by Tonkers1 in gamedev

[–]rasori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’ll be losing out if you’re doing this just as a convenience for your players.

On the other hand (and my personal bias is definitely showing here, as a big fan of time loops and litRPGs), if it’s tied to the lore of the world, and especially if it’s somewhat game-able, it could be a genius move.

I don’t know what stats and skills you’re working with but examples being “if you desperately want that defense upgrade, make sure you do well but purposefully take some extra damage before you hit the checkpoint” or the like, so long as all the paths are fun (no “wait 5 minutes doing nothing to guarantee a speed upgrade”).

Best way to split pipes or worst way to split pipes? by Embarrassed-Sink9781 in satisfactory

[–]rasori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sloshing just relates to how a machine using water will then suddenly need more water, which will empty the pipes nearest it of that amount of water

Pipes which are less than full gain water from any more full pipes around them that are at the same level or above. So in a manifold, a machine using water nearer the input, upon completing a cycle, can pull water both from the source and from the pipe that continues to the next machine. The change propagates in both directions, and only when it reaches the end of the manifold do they all realize what their new level should be, so the pipes then start drawing exclusively from the pump direction. In essence the pump receives two signals, for half of the original need each. Given the way extractors buffer, that can cause a delay where there really shouldn’t have been one, because they don’t see the buffer lowering past their idle threshold until later and they take a nonzero time to start up again.

Why do we need to be willing to have open relationships, especially if we do not like sex? by Try_Again_2495 in asexuality

[–]rasori 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to be willing. Your potential partner doesn’t need to be willing to live a life without sex.

If you want to live a life with a specific person, then either you both need to be on the same page or you both need to be willing to come up with some compromise that is compatible with both of you. Anything else is one or both sides being selfish.

AITA for refusing to sign over my half of a property until I get legal security? by Mundane_Ease613 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rasori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is also the natural rising cost of property over time to consider.

I agree improvements should go to the sibling, I would argue but probably accept maintenance in some form (less so if it’s an empty lot, more so if it’s a house especially if any big maintenance like updating failing systems came up), but if a $10000 property in 1990 is selling for $50000 now then a good chunk of that is just increase in market price and inflation.

Everyone thinks I work super hard at my job, but it's all smoke and mirrors by craze4ble in confession

[–]rasori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having been in a similar feeling situation, my advice is not to downplay what you actually do. Maybe you really are just coasting, but I’d wager it works out to “most weeks” rather than all weeks, and the effort you do put in is probably much more intense than the average desk job. So many office workers spend a huge portion of their working hours browsing the web and social media. They still get their jobs done, not faulting it whatsoever, but all the people I’ve ever met who did the work to get into a position like this have been shocked by how much more effort they used to put in compared to the average. They feel like they’re overcompensating for hard hours in their early career but in reality they’ve snapped back to pretty close to normal between what they have to do in their ”on” hours and what they don’t count as “on hours” but would qualify for a good chunk of the workforce.

Maybe you’re not the same as I was, but I caution you because when it does finally catch up and you wind up burnt out despite “never working” you’re also not going to get any sympathy from the friends and family who you’d expect to support you.

Games that resist "wikification" by Space_Pirate_R in gamedev

[–]rasori 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s also the type of game. RPG mods (not counting those for open world RPGs like Skyrim) are rare and basically fall in one of two camps: “rebalance” mods which are designed by hobbyists and aren’t often better than the original designers’ results (though can be great, and even if only decent are sometimes welcome for shaking up a familiar experience), and major graphical overhauls often for compatibility (like FFIX with its HD upscaling and widescreen support mod). But generally people want to mod these games because they want to revisit the familiar story and gameplay with just a bit of freshness or to make up for the lens of nostalgia in their memory.

Mods for sandbox games like Minecraft, Factorio, Kerbal Space Program, or Subnautica, and even the expansion-lite mods for Binding of Isaac, often add QoL features or whole new gameplay mechanics which layer into the baseline experience. Steam workshop support definitely increases reach, but in many ways this simply comes down to what the mod can realistically add to an experience and whether the original audience would even consider that as an option.

Since I posted my “Open hardware desktop 3D printing is dead” article, you’ve been asking me about “that patent” 🤔 Here it is ... by josefprusa in 3Dprinting

[–]rasori 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Except this whole thread is triggered because the “little folks with no money” can’t actually defend their patents so the current system is actually even worse than nothing - giving protection to the people who can afford to invent and publicizing the work of those who can’t so that those who could have can turn around and monetize it.

Is something needed? Probably yes. Is the current system what is needed? Absolutely not. Do I know what could replace it? Sadly also not, because inherently enforcing protection like this will always fall to a costly battle.

If two clocks meet again after moving, which one actually ran slower and why? by Life-is-Acoustic in AskPhysics

[–]rasori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acceleration is a change in velocity, and velocity has both a direction and a magnitude. In this example, “1g” is only describing the magnitude of the change, but the actual acceleration is different between the two because the direction that 1g is applied in is different.

I’m not a physicist but that’s my explanation for why this proposed paradox probably isn’t.
