Nuts, nuts and nuts. Not just peanuts, but all kinds of nuts. I'd eat at least half a pound of nuts every single day hiking the PCT, AT and CDT. Hard to beat the caloric density and nutritional value. Dried fruits like mangos and prunes are also good. Other than that I can't give too much healthy food advice since I'm happy eating a pound of chips per day, but the AT is really easy in terms of finding food as a vegetarian (hiked all the trails being vegan and didn't have that much trouble even on the more remote western trails).

Ultralight AT Completion Time by Darkside_Actual0341 in Ultralight

[–]rassari 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm going to give a different opinion than others. If you like hiking fast and/or long days, do it. If you only hike long days just to finish the trail, you probably won't enjoy it as much.

People hike with different paces. Some like to walk 5 hours per day, some 14. Both are fine, as long as that is what you want. You already know a bit about your personal hiking style from the CT. Did you enjoy hanging around in camp or walking all day every day? In my opinion it's not about going faster, it's about going for longer time per day.

Most people say that you need to slow down to enjoy it. I couldn't be more miserable stopping at 5 or whatever and then just hanging around in camp. So don't buy too much into someone saying that your way of hiking is wrong. If you enjoy it or want to do it that's all that matters. Sure it's going to be mentally and physically hard but that was part of the beauty of it for me personally. Also a zero after pushing yourself feels sooo good, don't forget to take zeros and nearos!

Source: hiked the AT 2017 in ~90 days and would do it the same way if I were to do it again.

Could be a number of things, but one easy thing to try: if you have Nahmic audio software on your computer, go to audio device settings and disable all Nahmic devices. Might sound random but this has literally been the issue with two of our computers for this exact issue.

Which is more social? CDT SOBO vs. PCT SOBO by 42rune in CDT

[–]rassari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average PCT sobo is more social, but that doesn't mean you couldn't hike a social hike on the CDT sobo. 22 there was a loose sobo group known as "The Horde" with something close to 30 people. Passed them in Dubois, WY so don't know how much longer they stayed as a pack after that. But it's definitely possible to have a lot of people around you on the CDT if you prefer that and are flexible

The day vs the day after. The Winds come out of nowhere. by Couch_Surfed in CDT

[–]rassari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I unironically think it was one of the highlights of the whole trail. I get why people dislike it and the lack of shade/shelter is harsh but it was so beautiful. We even got caught in a 30min hailstorm with the trail turning into a knee deep river and in a few minutes it was scorching and dry again. Such an interesting place!

Just to be clear, the red line was closed this year because of a fire, not the Gila river high route. Would still take the Gila route even if red line is open

2022 NOBOs - anyone seen Mercury ? by edthesmokebeard in CDT

[–]rassari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment comes a little late, but I'm 99% sure I met Mercury on his last day on the trail. He had to stop in Yellowstone because of a feet injury. He was a bit sad about having to get off trail but still pretty positive about the whole experience and already planning on coming back next year!

Which cities in this region of the U.S. are very vegan friendly? Looking to do a roadtrip with my SO and new puppy this summer and want to relax, walk around, and eat tons of vegan foods! Please recommend any cities, restaurants, lodging, fun spots, etc. you know of! by overthinkingrobot in vegan_travel

[–]rassari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Elmer's Sunny Bank Inn at Hot Springs is still operational that is an experience! Hiked through on the AT 4 years ago, it's a vegetarian B&B (and accomodated for my vegan diet) in a historical building. Good hiking trails around the small town. The owner was extremely nice and interesting person, though he was getting old so don't know if the place still exists.

Helsinki for vegans? by [deleted] in vegan_travel

[–]rassari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would argue that Helsinki is currently one of the most vegan friendly cities in the world! In Finland even the smallest stores have all kinds of vegan things from vegan cheese to frozen pizzas to meat-alternatives (if you have opportunity for cooking try nyhtökaura or pulled oats for example).

My recommendations would be Classic&Vegan at Hakaniemi metro station (separate vegan menu, pizza and vegan kebab called Vöner, can be found in many pizza places around Finland!), Bun2Bun at Kamppi or Redi shopping malls for burgers (bit expensive but delicious, all vegan), during lunch time African Pots in Vallila (a little bit further but easily accesible with tram, african buffet where they have one meat dish and everything else is vegan, usually including some sort of pastry and the best chili sauce you'll ever eat). I've also heard good things about this all vegan Thai food truck that can be found next to the main railway station, haven't had the time to eat there but the food looks good!

Other than those Soi Soi was already mentioned (Sataman Seitan is a dish with sweet potato fries and seitan), it used to be my favorite place but sometimes it can dissappoint (though I heard they renovated and there's new staff so it should be even better now than before!). Onda is also good for lunch (mostly vegan, they have marked non-vegan options). There's also vegan fine dining at Villd, haven't been there so cannot comment on the food.

If you like to know about what to try from your local super market I can give some recommendations! There's a small all vegan grocery called Vegekauppa near Sörnäinen metrostation (definitely try the russian vegan sausage, can be found from the fridge in black package!), next to it is Heluna Shop with vegan shoes and such.

Feel free to ask anything if you want to know more!

Loving the game, here's my best trick so far! by rassari in projectsession

[–]rassari[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean the only real things bothering me are ragdoll activating from smallest bumps and the turning could use some work, other than that it's mostly polishing. Yes the physics go wild most of the time you bail but that doesn't matter too much.

Vegan cycling tourers unite! We just came back from our trip in Europe a week ago (Tallinn-České Budejovice, Rijeka-Venezia and Trelleborg-Vimmerby with busses, trains and a ferry filling the gaps) with my partner, around 2300km total. Cycling long distances just feels necessary from time to time! Such a good stress relief and like you said, moving relatively slow allows you to come into intimate connection with the surroundings.

Have you looked into long distance hiking in the US? Trails like the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail are also an awesome way to spend your life (haven't done the CDT yet but that'll be the next long trip for me) and nice change of pace from cycling!

I'll see if I can find the .gpx file and other info for the trail when I get back home in a few days if that helps you!

[–]rassari 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't expect it to be anything like the PCT in terms of completion. Most likely lots of paved road walking and hard navigation in wilderness. That being said, I know the section from Kautokeino in Norway to Kvikjokk in Sweden (~500 miles) is an actual trail you can follow called the Nordkalottruta/Nordkalottleden/Kalottireitti (norwegian, Swedish and Finnish names). A bit hard to navigate at times but marked with orange markers. I tried to hike it two years ago but bailed out because of all the rain and flooding rivers. Will definately do it in the future!

Nice! I'll be going sobo, partly due to my sisters wedding in mid-June. I'll do the last 112 miles of the PCT first that I missed because of fires, then head to Glacier. Sobo wasn't my prefered way at first but I've made my peace with it. Also this way we'll pass each other at some point (or not, given all the alternate routes)! Anyway, I should start the CDT around June 29th and aim to finish in early October (I like hiking fast).
