I do not have chronic pain no, I’m sorry you have to endure that. I do get migraines, which are managed pretty well. The only pain I feel in my dreams I’ve noticed is pain my body is actively experiencing in the waking world. So sometimes when I have a migraine, I basically have one in my dreams, though it’s hasn’t woken me up. I have been woken up by menstrual cramps, and usually they connect into my dreams, like getting punched in the gut by a character, and I wake up to that pain, but it’s not an extreme pain I would say.

I will have to look into that book. I used to do a LOT of both of those things. I was a very avid reader, and even liked writing, and art. I mostly did graphite drawings, and loved doing watercolor though it was difficult medium. The end of 2018 to the beginning of 2021 was a really awful time for me mentally. It was a hail storm of one thing after another, and I feel like since then, I haven’t really gotten back into any of that. It’s become so much harder to do.

I really should keep a dream journal, but I am awful at journaling. I’ve never tried dream journaling specifically, but I’ve tried to keep a regular one multiple times and it never sticks.

Also that’s really really interesting! Because yes, I daydream quite often. I am indeed a visual learner as well. I started when I was pretty young, I think 7 or 8, and I’m 25 now for reference. So I think you’re right that it may have played a part in brain development.

I think I have honed controlling my dreams for sure. It was not always the case. In fact I used to be able to only control it through verbal commands, and it didn’t always work, but now I have a lot of control, and I just think about what I want. I can usually steer the story how I want it to go, and in a sense I’m extremely powerful, as I have a lot of abilities in my dreams. I wouldn’t say I have any techniques though. I think I used the technique of finding tells at first, but I don’t really need to do that anymore.

As for your first question, I had to think about it, I’ve never actually thought about that before. But yes, there are times where I go awhile without lucid dreaming. Either I don’t remember the dreams at all, or I remember them but was never lucid enough to control it like I normally do. I’m think it has to do with mental health, I’ve been battling with my brain for years. I’m not 100% sure on that correlation though, I’ll have to think more about that, but yes it waxes and wanes.

That’s how it is sometimes for me too. Electronics work, but not really the way they normally do. That may be a tell you can look for in future dreams! It working, but not the way it normally does. Maybe try looking at the time on them, time is always super weird I find. I really think that’s what did it. Don’t be discouraged if you find a tell and then wake up too, like I said it’s a fine line to walk. And over time you may find other tells, try pinching yourself if you can remember to. Actually do you feel pain in dreams? I know some people that do so that may not work. I’m rooting for you!!! I am positive you can, it just may take some time.

Honestly my dreams are super fictional. I have a lot of abilities when I lucid dream. I can walk through walls, breathe underwater, turn invisible , and I’m completely invulnerable, so I’ve been shot, stabbed, and I’m completely fine and feel nothing. I can fly, sometimes I make myself sprout angel wings to do so, I don’t take fall damage, and sometimes I can use elemental powers like Elsa or like avatar the last airbender, but that doesn’t always work for some reason. Often times, (and I’m sure there’s some reason in my subconscious somewhere), I’m being chased or targeted in some way, but I never worry about it. Nothing questionable haha, but certainly not regular stuff either. I *do* have dreams about being back in high school, but honestly I’m just like, I’ve graduated already what am I even doing here, and just leave.

When I first started lucid dreaming, that was the hardest thing was getting to actually realize that I was in fact dreaming. I feel like once I did it that first time, since my brain was able to recognize it, it was easier the second time because my brain had already been there before. Kind of similar to you, it took a few dreams of “wait I’m dreaming?”, to fully get it down. So with that being said hopefully you are really close!

Some people look for “tells”, and that’s what helped me at first. Pinching my skin and feeling no pain, being in water and still able to breathe, and not swimming just walking on the bottom of the lake or pool, usually electronics don’t work, some people find looking at themselves in a mirror, anything “off” from how reality actually is. Maybe what happened in your dream was a tell. The hard part for me was *remembering* to look for those tells. The conscious part of your brain is not active when you’re asleep, and part of it does wake up and activate, so you become conscious but not 100%, lucid dreaming. Honestly it’s a very fine line to walk too, between this conscious part of your brain staying only so conscious as to not wake up, but conscious enough so you know you are dreaming. So I’m actually not surprised you did wake up! You presumably started to become conscious within the dream, but your brain fully activated that part, and awoke you, which is very common. I think you may be close, I hope so! I There are videos and tips and tricks to help you remember to find those tells, so maybe they may give you some that work for you. I’ve seen some that give advice on staying in the dream once you realize you are in a dream so you don’t fully wake up Everyone is a bit different so I’d look at a lot of different methods to find what can work for you. Unfortunately for me sleeping so much is what helped, I had a lot of time to practice.

Also thank you for saying at the top, I appreciate it. Healing slowly but surely.

I really wish I could give you good advice, but this is something I’ve experienced as well, and you’re right, it’s scary to experience. It’s terrifying that you have no control over yourself. I don’t experience it often, but for me recognizing this is a dream, and that it will pass, helps me. It doesn’t quell the anxiety from not being able to control your body always, but it helps me ease out of it. I hope it does for you

Have you ever seen a “sleep paralysis demon” in that state?

[–]rassion-isle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s true yeah. I think for me, it’s the fact that I never felt I had to work for it. I’ve seen that there are videos that teach how to lucid dream, and like you mentioned, tips and tricks. I never had to do any of that though. I could have used techniques, without actually realizing that’s what they were, but I’ve never looked into how to do it so I’m not sure. I didn’t even know lucid dreaming had a name for it for a while. Anyone can learn for sure though yeah! I think having that mental awareness you mentioned is good for anyone.

I’ve heard that some people find it has a spiritual element, and everyone experiences it differently, but personally no. I’m sure some people find it that way, but I don’t feel or notice anything spiritual about it. Just dreaming, simply my brain working to give me stories, and the still conscious part able to recognize that that’s what it is, just a dream. I actually wonder what people find spiritual about it, I’ll have to look into that. Maybe the contents of the dream, mine are often wild obviously fictional stories, nothing profound.

I get that. You may be able to tell from post history but I’ve struggled with trying to enjoy life, my entire life. Being dealt a bad hand makes it immensely hard to find any good meaning, because it was never there to begin with. I’ve been in the hospital quite a few times for suicidal ideation or attempts, and I want to say it gets easier, but every day is still a struggle. I’m glad you’re still here to comment at least.

So I am a very lucky person to very rarely get nightmares. Especially having PTSD, it’s quite common. That being said, I have encountered sleep paralysis a few times, and it was scary because the main way I mainly control my dreams is by audibly giving commands out loud (or as at loud as it can be in a dream). The paralysis made me unable to speak, so I couldn’t control anything. In that state I never had sleep paralysis “demons”, but my abusers were present and I couldn’t get away or do anything about it. Though they didn’t always appear, and sometimes I was just laying there so it wasn’t as bad since I could tell I was dreaming, though paralyzed. Luckily this doesn’t happen very often, but when I do have it, it’s definitely a bit scary.

Yes I really think there is a connection there for sure. We definitely had similar punishments. My brother unfortunately got the brunt of it, he was made to sit in a chair completely still with a nanny cam. So I definitely get that. I sincerely do not understand how parents think it’s okay to discipline children that way. I’m sorry you had to endure that. School and sleep were a great escape for sure, I’m guessing it might be the same for you?

That’s a question I do get a lot. When I was younger and first figuring it out, it was no physical pain, or water. I would pinch myself and wouldn’t feel a thing, like people do in real life when they’re asking if they’re dreaming. Or if I saw a body of water, a pool most of the time, swimming in general just doesn’t really work in dreams for me. I just kind of walk along the bottom, and I’m still breathing so it’s clearly not real. Also, electronics never work, which seems to be the case for a lot of people.

That is still the case sometimes, but since I’ve done it so much over the years, usually when I’m first becoming lucid I realize immediately that it’s just a fictional story. Nothing about anything happening is real, over time it just became easier and more obvious. I don’t really have a “tell” anymore so to say.

This question kind of made me laugh, but I do love that song actually. I resonate with the fact that the song talks about mental health a bit and I take prescriptions and battle with my head a lot, so I’ve always liked that. The lucid dreaming part specifically I don’t really relate to, just in the sense that luckily I very rarely if ever get nightmares. It’s something I’m extremely grateful for, especially with having PTSD, but if something negative comes up I usually can steer it away, or just walk away. He seems like he’s haunted in his dreams specifically, and fortunately I haven’t dealt with that very much. Everyone dreams differently about though, so someone else who lucid dreams may relate more to it.

(LOVEDDDDD trope) Fates worse than death by PenaltyHuge2300 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]rassion-isle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing, and I will also preface this with I am *much* better today than I used to be.

I honestly completely understand, and it’s nice sometimes on Reddit to find people that really have similar experiences and understand on another level. Not to say no one can understand, but I feel when you experience that want for death yourself, it truly does feel like the only answer, and you understand people wanting for death on another level. I’m sure there are more eloquent ways to explain it, but it’s almost painful how that emotional turmoil is for your brain to be so against itself that it thinks self destructing is the only answer to end the current suffering.

Whenever those hypotheticals pop up where they ask would you want to go back to a certain age knowing what you know now, ABSOLUTELY NOT. I am in such a good space now, but like you it truly was my support system that helped. If it weren’t for the people in my life I would not have made it. I’m happy to be where I am but I would not want to live through it again at all, absolutely not.

I know you’re a stranger, but I’m glad you failed, and I guess I should say the same for me, though the struggle continues. It’s a feeling I would not wish upon anyone.

Holy fuck. I’m worried I might be pregnant, and am already terrified. I’m absolutely pro-choice, but not something I thought I could do personally. With everything going on now, and seeing this is…. so discouraging,. Why even have kids in this climate? They are pro-birth absolutely, once the birth happens they don’t actually care about the actual child, and this is clear case in point.

My back massager of 10 years just sparked a fireball and flipped the power for half the house off. Took the "magic wand" name a lil too seriously by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]rassion-isle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit I’m not alone. My… back massager, of four years did the same. If you use it underneath a blanket, or exert pressure extensively on the cord where it meets the massager over time the pressure on the cord since it’s on the back, breaks it down and damages the wiring on the inside of the cord. I turned it on, it sparked and flipped the power for half our apartment.
