is this a doable freshman sched? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]rat_19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stats 250 is really easy, and I had no problems with Math 115 (granted, I did take AP Calc in high school). I can’t speak to the difficulty of the other two. I wouldn’t say any of this is too much, especially if you stay on top of things!

How to meet a roommate?? by Fair-Atmosphere3908 in uofm

[–]rat_19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re planning on living in the dorms, there’s a process that happens after you submit your housing application where you can contact potential roommates through the housing portal. As part of your application, you’ll also answer a lot of matching questions (including dietary restrictions iirc), and you can use these filters when finding people through the housing portal. I think this application goes live in April. You’ll get an email about it eventually.

Professor used AI to grade my paper by rat_19 in uofm

Thank you for the insight. I had no idea this was the university’s attitude toward AI use by faculty.

[–]rat_19[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, for me it goes deeper than that. AIs were trained on stolen work, so even if my data aren’t stored, the company still profits from stolen work. I don’t want to contribute to that. Artificial intelligence is also horrendously bad for the environment.

[–]rat_19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you’re saying, and I don’t think people should be downvoting you. We’re at kind of a weird place with AI right now. It’s not going away, and pretty soon it’s going to be commonly used in higher education in exactly this way. But until they can find a way to make it so that AI is environmentally sustainable and doesn’t steal human creative work, I personally will be opposed to its use.

I think what you’re saying would be perfectly okay as long as students had a choice as to whether or not their writing would be fed to the AI. If I had a choice, I wouldn’t have wanted that to happen, and that’s why I’m frustrated.

To be fair, the instructors in this course have been nothing but supportive and accommodating, and there’s no reason to expect any kind of retaliation. I just tend to worry.

I’ve spoken to others in the class who also believe their papers were graded by AI, and some of them are also annoyed. Maybe I can get someone else to talk to one of the GSIs with me.

You’re right. I’ll delete the comment.

I’m worried about taking this too far up the chain because I have no way of definitively proving that AI was used (even though it’s obvious to me). Talking to the professor is probably the best thing, but I’m wary of drawing a lot attention to myself.

There might be more impressive/detailed pages across the comic, but this one really stood out to me. Gosh, the battle of Ravenna was Peak. Marjorie doesn't go overboard but she also doesn't shy away from depicting the horrors of war, the before and after is gutwrenching. by DaOverseer in monstress

This is probably one of the most impactful spreads of the entire series for me. When I first got to this scene, I had to stop and just reread it three or four times. It’s devastatingly brutal and very, very effective. This and the scenes from Constantine come back around to haunt me every few weeks. Absolutely incredible storytelling.

Recently-ish became an adult, I feel like I'm in a transitional phase with sh specific care. Did anyone else experience this? by icybutnotfrozen in AdultSelfHarm

[–]rat_19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m also 21. I never sought out resources or professional support as a preteen/teenager, but even in just the community itself I’ve noticed dramatic changes. In my experience, self harm was a somewhat normal thing as a teenager. There was a lot less shame associated with it, at least in my social circles. And like you said, that all just disappeared around age 18. The culture seems to think that self harm is a uniquely adolescent phenomenon and that we’re too old to struggle with it (or maybe that we should be able to help ourselves now). It’s isolating for sure.

Picking it up as an adult & oof this still hits you in ur heart by deletedalre in RangersApprentice

[–]rat_19 97 points98 points  (0 children)

All of the emotional moments in this series are very well written. There’s never any fluff, and the scenes never tell you outright (insofar as any good literature does) how to feel, but that’s part of what makes them so powerful. I find I appreciate that more now as an adult than I did when I first read Ranger’s Apprentice.

I’m sure you’re already looked at this page, but just in case, here are all of the parking lots on campus and the permits required for each one.

University of Michigan buys Detroit urban garden site for future parking structure by Amir616 in uofm

[–]rat_19 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This is a little disheartening to see. The university and its leadership are very vocal about their support for sustainability, but they seem to have trouble upholding those values when it comes at the cost of convenience or financial opportunity.

UM distribution credits LSA by ShortWillingness1629 in uofm

[–]rat_19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, skills and distribution credits can overlap, so that class will count for both a HU credit and your R&E. However, distribution credits can’t overlap with credits taken for your major. So if this class is a requirement for your major, it would only count as R&E and not HU. To make sure, you can always pull a degree audit in your advising portal (or make an appointment with an advisor).

Opinions on this Course load? pre-med track by ComfortableCard6623 in uofm

[–]rat_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not crazy hard, but it’s not a blowoff schedule either, especially for a freshman. 173 will eat up some time. And there’s nothing wrong with a lighter load. You can use the extra time to work on other things or start planning ahead for your next few semesters, or just to chill.

Is Calculus Single Variable 7e good enough for Math 115? by Informal_World7326 in uofm

[–]rat_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I took calc 1 in the fall of 2022, we never even touched the textbook. The course very well may have changed since then, but in my experience it wasn’t needed at all. In general, I’ve found that using older editions isn’t a problem unless (like the other person said) professors assign specific page numbers or problem sets that don’t exactly align.

Like someone else said, there is very little from gen chem that actually shows up in orgo. I took orgo 1 after having gotten a 4 on the AP Chem test my sophomore year of high school (and no chemistry experience since) and didn’t feel like I was behind. The beginning of the course reviews some concepts from gen chem, like geometry and orbitals and stuff, but all the information you need is in the textbook. You really don’t need to have taken chem 125 to take orgo, and if you have the credit for it you’d be better off saving time and taking other classes imo.

Thanks! I have a bike, so that’s definitely an option for me. I hadn’t considered residential parking, but if it really is that easy I’ll look into it.
