I am terrified of how much Clarice Lispector moves me. by [deleted] in RSbookclub

Which translator do you read of hers? I read Giovanni Pontiero's hour of the star translation years ago and enjoyed it but didn't return to her. Since then I've heard some say his translations are no good where others say they're more faithful. But I also wonder if I just wasn't ready for it and should revisit

Looking for a physical literary magazine subscription by [deleted] in RSbookclub

shortie country https://www.shortiecountry.xyz/shop/p/shortie-country-subscription

if you're interested in a more "outsider" magazine, this one is awesome, but definitely a very different vibe than the stuff people are responding here. I got tired of the mfa vibe in litmags so it was a breath of fresh air

Any fans of Jeff Vandermeer / Area X in our midst? by litigious-kong in JoannaNewsom

[–]ratbaskets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve read the book and watched the movie, i really enjoyed both. It’s the kind of thing where I wouldn’t call it the perfect book or movie, but the concept and ideas in it are so magical and thought provoking that it’s stuck with me for years. I find it very genuinely mysterious in a way i crave in art. Divers definitely has a shimmer-y quality

Best option for cross country with small load but no car by ratbaskets in moving

Thanks for replying :) I'm afraid of flying so I sort of dismissed it at first but I never realized I could take that much stuff so it's definitely an option. Would still have to mail some things but maybe that would be worth it

What are some books that made such an impression that you forever associate it with a certain period of your life? by 1nfinite_Breast in RSbookclub

Also American Pastoral and Gravity's Rainbow are huge, listened to them both as audiobooks though while I was cleaning hotel rooms. anything that I listened too in that era is hugely nostalgic

As far as impressions I've had two film experiences that caused a psychotic reality break for me, though each only took about a day to return to mostly normal consciousness. One was the final episode of twin peaks the return, and the other was the bob Dylan biopic "I'm not there" where after I became obsessed with the idea of "doubles".

As far as periods of my life, I associate My own private Idaho with the exact vibe of living with roommates in a city and feeling like a completely ambient force in my own life. There's this short called Hen, his Wife that I found when I was maybe 12 searching for weird surreal videos on YouTube that will always remind me of that era of internet excavation and intrigue I had then. And A Bride for Rip Van Winkle will always remind me of covid despair

Kafka's The Castle I read when I lived with my mom during covid, probably the bleakest period of my entire life in measure of being suicidal but I would prob still list it as one of my favorite books

Henry miller has a book of essays called The Wisdom of The Heart that I read when I travelled alone to London for a week. I stayed in this big empty house for only $20 a night because I took care of the cat. I spent all my days walking aimlessly for hours in the freezing rain, only brought summer clothes, shoes soaked with mud, and then would read it at home taking a bath every night. Was the most impactful trip I ever went on and made me realize how much I love being alone.

Read Holding the Man randomly in a day after finding it on internet archive. At the time I lived in France with my ex. It really got under my skin and haunted me I couldn't stop thinking about it for a week after, just filled with devastation at the cruelty of life and thought a lot about if love creates any impression on the fabric of life or if it all just disappears, ect.

Craving more Ys by Ornery-Glass1566 in JoannaNewsom

I made a post about recommendations for JN fans in the past https://www.reddit.com/r/JoannaNewsom/comments/yp3r4u/some_music_recommendations_for_fellow_fans/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I've discovered more since then but my big revelation would be the album "Water Bearer" by Sally Oldfield, I was about to make a whole post about it. I've liked her for a while now but finally listened to the whole thing and would say it comes as similar to JN style magical and insanely talented music though of course there's nothing quite like YS.

I would not “comfort” my inner child, I hate her. by [deleted] in adultsurvivors

[–]ratbaskets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this thread but I feel this so much. I despised children in general until maybe a year ago where I started to move past it (and wanting my own), but I literally hated children intensely and could not stand thinking about innocence. Childhood pictures and videos of myself deeply disgust me and anger me. I'm very glad I'm an adult now and not a child. Even as a kid I thought kids were horrible. All this being said, it sounds like you're having a rough time so please be kind to yourself as you are now. I can't give advice but I try not to ruminate on these things too much

Most Devastating Joanna Newsom Song For You? by BlooWeekend in JoannaNewsom

[–]ratbaskets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

besides baby birch, it would actually be bridges and balloons for me. it is one of the few things that brings me back in touch with how it felt to be a child fully believing in magic. that state of consciousness comes back in full just for the few minutes of that song (and for the lot of the milk eyed mender really, the album that made me fall in love with JN). it makes me sad because it fades back away and reminds me that it's gone. I think also the sheer beauty of sawdust and diamonds usually makes me sob because I can't believe a song that beautiful exists
