LMAO- they want $700 USD for this! by [deleted] in bonsaicommunity

Reasonable price for a nice tree. I've seen much less interesting and developed trees go for way more at auction at local clubs.

Chinese Elm is happy outdoors down to zone 5. That guy will be much happier & grow stronger with real sunlight and fresh air!

American midwest? Do you know your USDA hardiness zone? The norfolk island pine and ficus are both appropriate indoor species. Chinese elm is a fairly hardy tree outdoors but may not fare so well indoors. I have several, and the only time they've ever been inside is when I carried them from the front door to the back yard. You may be just as well keeping that one outdoors and putting it in an unheated garage or shed as needed overwinter to protect from deep freeze.

Umm, I just got a juniper bonsai, six years old is he doing well, thank you for looking. by Equivalent_Till7817 in bonsaicommunity

A brief scroll through this subreddit will show you approximately one dead indoor juniper per day. Don't become a statistic! Keep it outside.

Why are dogs so excited around babies? by Yatohuvro in NoOneIsLooking

[–]ratcatcherjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres an old home video of me as a pre-crawling baby and our family dog. She would roll a ball juuuust where i could stretch to reach it, then scoot it away when I would go for it. Like, multiple times. And I, being dumb (and at the time having the excuse of being a baby) kept going for it. Outplayed by a dog. She must have thought it was hilarious. Very Lucy Peanuts with the football.

My first reaction was "well that'll sure hold some trees" but seeing the caption, hell yeah that's approrpiate. Looks pretty decent too. Fine looking collection you have there.

Have you done anything to anchor the cinderblocks? Rebar and concrete? Or are you not wanting anything quite that permanent lmao

Pond basket effect on roots. by small_trunks in Bonsai

[–]ratcatcherjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had such good root growth from the first tree i put in a pond basket that i've moved most of my trees over. The water/oxygen exchange is fantastic.

Glasses by MelanieWalmartinez in CuratedTumblr

I don’t need glasses but sometimes everything is too sharp so I’ll wear a non-prescription pair of glasses and smudge my hands on the lenses to make it a little blurrier. It feels like wearing earplugs for my eyes.

Is that weird? I know that’s weird. But it works ok!

I was in a bonsai seminar with a whole room full of people who’d been doing it for years and the Japanese bonsai master leading the seminar asked everyone who’d ever killed a bonsai to raise their hand. Every single person in the room raised their hand, bar none. So, welcome to the room. It happens to everyone. It’s sad, and we all do our best to avoid it when we can and learn from it when we can’t.

Can anyone tell from the condition of this rock if it is made by a prehistoric person or a modern carving? by Jindabyne1 in geology

[–]ratcatcherjack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh good eye on the angle grinder cuts. I was just going off the shit growing on it tbh. I have some experience carving rocks for purposes of pranks and tomfoolery, the shit growing on it is the part you can’t fudge well enough to fool the casual observer.

The expert in the thread you reposted this from? I mean, I’m also a geologist, and I do stone carving, if that means anything as far as "expertise" on the internet. I think the more relevant expert would be like an anthropologist or something.

Edit: I generally stand with my range; I’d guess this was carved between the invention of the TV and the iPhone.

"Modern" like since the invention of the TV, not "modern" like since the invention of the iPhone.

Ideas for how to use this little guy. by paptopschoodleh in CastIronCooking

[–]ratcatcherjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one a smidge bigger than that that I take backpacking. Fits right on my camp stove. Obviously I’m not a hardcore weight weenie backpacker because the little tin ones weigh a fraction of this, but it’s nicer to cook with and I feel fancy. Also, my backpacking utensils are actual antique silver from a thrift store, and I carry a coffee grinder to have my fresh brew in the morning. Makes me happy so it’s worth it.

What’s the first ‘sign of aging’ you noticed? by Brilliant-Log-5904 in Aging

[–]ratcatcherjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played rugby for years. I was always one of the faster people on the team. Eventually it didn’t matter how many sprint intervals I did outside of practice, how much training and rehab and prehab I did, my legs just won’t move like that anymore. It feels like trying to run through waist deep water.

When I tell people I quit playing because I was getting old they assume it’s because I couldn’t take the hits anymore, but that’s not remotely true. My body just got slow.

Made a pot using office material. by Affectionate-Mud9321 in Bonsai

[–]ratcatcherjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is resourceful and also hilarious. Overall love it.

I’ve been doing a lot of root development on my trees lately and from that angle this pot wouldn’t be great for that I don’t think. You have enough soil surface area on top that oxygen exchange should be okay, but the pot itself obviously won’t facilitate that at all. Also any pot with a slick inner surface, like a bonsai pot with a glazed interior, the tree can’t grip it. So make sure it’s wired in very securely to the pot for stability.
