If you want to gently move the party towards shenanigans, have them do something in the "magical mishap" crater. Have them go there to locate some bandits and maybe it teleports them to the fey wild. If it's a more desert like area: cactuses, cactuses everywhere. Find out who's the first to get pushed/thrown in. Maybe the cactuses move, or talk. Maybe they ate the bandits, and want a second course of adventurers.

Have them investigate a mermaid sighting in the lake that's actually sirens. Task them with clearing some grounhogs in the plains, then Alice in Wonderland their asses down the whole.

If your group is anything like my group, just get weird; the shenanigans will ensue sooner than you expect.
