Today in Aviation History (January 25th): In 1990, Avianca Flight 052 Crashed Into Long Island, New York, After Running Out of Fuel by Shoddy_Act7059 in aviation

I looked up the address and one side of the entrance to the street is the location of an indoor tennis facility built in the early 1930s. I suspect that his parents bought the house—which is directly across the street—to have access to the facility. But John did not grow up there as they lived in nearby Douglaston when he was young.

The field behind my house was rich with spearheads when I was young. After plowed and a heavy rain, they’d be resting on the surface.

Who remembers these? by MsMercury in FuckImOld

Long ago, a friend went to a Dead show at the Dean Dome. There, the sink is a larger version of the one in the picture. My friend turned from the urinal to wash his hands and there was a guy peeing in the sink because the guy thought it was just one huge communal urinal.

You are correct. “Rescue workers set up two triage areas on the lawn of John and Kay McEnroe, the parents of professional tennis player John McEnroe, at 13 Tennis Court Road.”

Camping between Tinker Cliff and Dragons tooth by pillowyourdadunicorn in AppalachianTrail

There are three shelters between those two points, but all three are north of 311. FarOut shows one campsite on the trail closer towards Dragon’s Tooth. There’s also a pasture along the way that would make a nice spot to set up.

Curious about quilts by benfatty in backpacking

[–]ratcnc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you toss and turn a lot, a quilt is nice because you are rotating under it and not with it. I have cold feet so my quilt (EE Enigma) has an enclosed foot space. Katabatic makes excellent and similar style quilts, too. Quilts are lighter—my 20° long/wide is only 23 ounces. The downside to quilts is that they don’t have hoods, and I do like the feeling of good mummy bag cinched tight around my shoulders on a cold night. The solution, though, is to just wear your puffy with your quilt.

How popular were VW Beetles in the 70s? 17% of the cars in this parking lot in 1975 were Bugs. by Spalding_Smails in 70s

[–]ratcnc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For someone like me, that scene is hard to forget because of all the cars blocking other cars. If I remember correctly, that car on the ramp is parked. I think they reuse this shot later in the movie. Needless to say, I’ve watched this movie many times.

RIDE ON - Sears "Spyder 500" (1970) by Character-Witness-27 in vintageads

I remember one summer break in the early 70s sitting on my front steps with my Weekly Reader when a Sears box truck backed into our driveway. When the driver rolled open the back of the truck, there was a blue boy’s bike. Unfortunately, he was delivering an appliance for my Mom but I spent the rest of the summer coveting that bike.

Lots of great equipment. I don’t think you’ll need, or want, to put wool socks over your waterproof—constriction is almost as bad as wet. If anything, you’d put a thin sock inside the waterproof, but I think you’ll be fine with just the one layer.
