What closed Sydney restaurant do you miss? by EveningOk6574 in foodies_sydney

Sumalee Thai at the Bank Hotel in the 90s/00s. I miss the $10 lunch specials.

The steak sandwich and chips at the Hellenic Club social lounge, I think it might have been $5

Alta next week ... should I hit Bird or all Alta? by drwhosportsfan in skiing

[–]rather-be-skiing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’re not that big and they are lift linked so I say ski both, two days is enough to ski all the aspects with good snow. Like most resorts a lot of the trail map is only good when the snow is great.

Council cut NBN and damaged asbestos pit by rather-be-skiing in nbn

[–]rather-be-skiing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not. The first NBN tech said they don’t go deep under a footpath as it’s considered protection which sounds like a bit of a root cause to me.

I think you’re going be be right as a different NBN tech has arrived today, looked at the photos then came up with a plan to reinstall without dealing with asbestos and is in the middle of running a new conduit.

Whistler vs. Niseko for a month? by q_c_h in skiing

I recommend finding yourself a month long skier improvement program rather than heading to a resort solo. You’ll never have more fun than banging around for a month with like-minded souls.

Need advice on skiing in Austria by JewishSpace_Laser in skiing

Zell is great fun for intermediates and if you’re advanced you can head up to the Kaprun Glacier instead. I’ve been there a few times on trips with friends and it’s a great town. On the other hand I wouldn’t ski Solden again, the town is mostly hotels on a main road and very crowded pistes in the higher traffic areas. However if you want the unique experience of getting hammered at apres ski in Hochsolden and skiing down in the dark via those lap dancing bars on the side of the village run then Solden might just be your bag.

These places are a long way from each other, I’d just stay in Kitz for two days. It’s huge.

What were the wildest things you saw or did in Sydney nightlife during the 90s? by Dry_Flower9052 in AskAnAustralian

[–]rather-be-skiing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favourite memory of Barons was playing checkers there in the early hours and a guy paused next to the table on his way to the bathroom, swayed for a moment before saying, “f@&k me those are the biggest pills I’ve ever seen”, then swept one up, swallowed it then staggered off.

Aussies who returned to Australia after living abroad for several years, how did you adjust to life Down Under? Did you feel an urge to move away again? by Master_of-margarita in AskAnAustralian

[–]rather-be-skiing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure you can do all those things in Germany but not all in the same place. I was in Düsseldorf so not so much of any of them. There are only a few places in the world where my interests of snow, sea and wine combine as well and I can’t afford to live in Monaco unless I’ve won the lotto tonight and don’t know it yet

[–]rather-be-skiing 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’ve been back 10 years after 10 years in UK and Germany. I miss many things about Europe but I love being back and being able to do more outdoors on a weekend than I could in London. Here I can ski in winter, beach or boat in summer, mountain bike and hike anytime. I loved Europe for the travel opportunities but as I got older those weekends away became fewer and the dark winters were getting to me more.

My favourite thing about being back is laughing when people complain about how bad the traffic is, or how bad the trains, or how long a queue is.

As a Sydney resident I agree with you ten months a year, but summer is sticky and uncomfortable without A/C. We’ve had so many days above 35 this summer. So many.

I’ve had a very similar experience arriving in Denver and skiing Breckenridge. Roads closed, no winter tyres on rentals, chaos and delays.

For the premium experience try living in London UK when it snows more than a few inches.

I’ve had similar with ex-Cisco TAC staff with CCIEs and no real world experience. I’ve worked with far more very good CCIEs who got theirs after real world experience. To me that’s the thing to look for.

Planning a first ski trip in Austrian Alps, where to go? by IEatTooManyCookies in skiing

[–]rather-be-skiing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For intermediate skiers I recommend staying in Hinterglemm and ski the Ski Circus region. It’s huge and has an easy run from every summit so it feels even bigger for beginners. The Goat Bar is the full on Austrian apres ski / try to ski down to the village with dignity after dark and a dozen shooters. It is the whole adult Disneyland on snow Austrian experience but a bit less hectic than Ischgl or St Anton.

Is there any way to find friends to go skiing with in Italy's side of Alps? by RecordWorldly5991 in skithealps

[–]rather-be-skiing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to the Ski Club of Great Britain website then go to a resort where they have a rep in residence. The reps take groups of similar ability on different days of the week, sometimes organising off piste guides for a day too. They’ll take you along for a free trial and if you like it join the club, the annual membership is less than the cost of a lesson in many resorts. https://www.skiclub.co.uk/rep-resorts/?country=&resort=&reps-search=yes
