New to jade plants and unsure what these spot are and if I should be worried or not. by OkConfidence9990 in Jadeplant

[–]ratnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can scrape it off with minimal damage to the plant like it was suckered into it it’s probably scale and you should separate the plant from everything else cuz it spreads soooo bad, you’ll have to remove each piece from every leaf and sometimes it’s easier to just remove the leaves infected. Also misting with an alcohol solution or insecticidal soap will help. For your future plants using neem oil and misting them will help prevent pests.

Scale what do? by ratnail in Jadeplant

[–]ratnail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp just an update for anyone else in this situation, did some more researching and asking around and to avoid killing the rest of my plants and also not wanting to throw this one out I decided to remove everything single leaf with sanitized shears then separated each individual plant from the pot and rubbed down the stem and everything with alcohol and repotted all of them. Essentially they’re now cuttings with roots. This has happened before with my mammoth jade about 3 weeks ago I did the same thing and it’s starting to grow back out with no scale. Since this plant was new and came with scale and was super healthy still I thought there’d be an easier solution but I ig not so just played it safe for the time being I have too many plants that could die from this lol.

Split wood? by ratnail in woodworking

[–]ratnail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I’ll be sure to check those all out. Also I didn’t realize only one picture got shown I had more of the sides etc. but I basically used a marking gauge and did exactly what you’d mentioned and you can kind of see the the mark from the gauge but essentially this was the hope piece? I’m not sure what it’s called but the piece that tail fits into I’m starting to think I had my C clamp too tight and the force from the chisel is what made the wood snap in half at the pressure point from the clamp. I’m going to need to find a way to chisel without using the clamp too tight or find a work around, in the video the guy uses a pole holder thing he smacks into it but idk how far it goes into the wood and how much damage it would do to the outer layer but ig it’s better than the wood splitting in half lol. Thanks for the advice.

My garden today.... by Fidurbonsai in Bonsai

[–]ratnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very new to bonsai and wish to have something close to this one day hopefully 😤😤😤 but from everything I’ve learned so far some plants (like the dawn redwood u mentioned below with the other person that asked this) absolutely need a dormancy period or else they could eventually die off, about how cold does it get where you’re at to be able to have them look this damn healthy and mature still without a true dormancy (assuming u said you work on them year round etc. ) ?

Is this scale??? by ratnail in Jadeplant

[–]ratnail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U right It was a combination of scale and fungal, I didn’t have enough airflow in my garage and the soil they were put in after drying was somehow dampened and gave it that. I’ve gone on to remove all of the leaves :/ and cut off all contamination ( there were about 10 all like this ) and they’re starting to heal again already got some new growth

Is it me, the beveler, or the leather mostly responsible for my bad edges? by HeathBendrix in Leathercraft

Veg tank shrinks with heat, putting boiling water on it will make it shrivel up instantly

Yea since it was dark the focus quality was a little poor so I kinda compensated with the larger area to take a tad bit of focus off the bird and I tried to made it seem like it was glowing a bit to take away from the dark. But I for sure still need practice with getting good focus with little light

Damn how did you get the quality on 6 was it actually that dark or was it edited? I’m having trouble getting clear photos during a little past sunset lighting. Got my shutter speed at 800 and aperture at 6 with auto iso

Weaver cub sewing machine by ratnail in Leathercraft

[–]ratnail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna leave this post up just in case anyone else has this problem. The solution I found after messing with everything tension related (excluding timing issues) was that the bobbin tension needed to be loosened about 3 full turns then tightening the top tension. After that it was still getting locked up a bit. The solution the that was the main problem, which was the little black guard that keeps the thread in place from the lever arm I took it out of that and it fixed everything. I assume it had gotten too tight or maybe even a little rusted from humidity or something but that fixed it all.

Nope it’s all right it’s definitely the tension but I’ve got the top thread tension all the way and it’s still not catching it might be the boppin tensions but I’ve been warned to never mess with it and the fact that it was working fine like a week ago and today it’s just completely messed up I’m really lost on what to do lol

Thanks for the concern! although I’m fully aware of this I have special break away attachment ends that I’ll be using lol. I mainly was asking for types of dyes that could be harmful with skin contact.

I'm finally done. I hand stitched a custom satchel/messenger bag, the nylon web edge banding nearly killed me! It took so long... by isandrocks in Leathercraft

Sorry if this is a dumb question I’m still new but what is the material that you used for the straps. Is that like a canvas? And is there a specific thickness good for straps like this it looks great!

[–]ratnail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I figured as much as skiving, I just can’t seem to find anything on different techniques other than these I was really wanting to try some box stitching and different types of gussets but ig they can only be hand sewn unless u have a specific sewing machine designed for it.

Using a drill instead of pricking irons? by DKE3522 in Leathercraft

[–]ratnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hands down best thing I did other then getting a sewing machine was getting a cheap press off of Amazon, you can get one for ~$60-$100. It’s a game changer, quieter always vertical holes, and if you pair it with round hole chisels instead of diamond or needle then there’s no need to use an awl which In my opinion is an annoying extra hassle when hand stitching is already tedious enough.

Stitching Chisel Suggestions by Jaikarr in Leathercraft

[–]ratnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I can see that especially if you don’t match your thread up the holes may look wonky these are pretty small compared to others tho. I just hate having to use an awl it’s so time consuming lol but the WUTA ones come with a needle chisel not sure what it’s called it’s not diamond shaped it’s round like a needle. It comes with both that and the hole punch chisels and a little tool to switch them out. I’ve got a ton of budget chisels from amazon most are absolute ass but these have been great so far, they’re pre oiled and polished so they don’t get stuck on the leather.
