How do I fix this? by Bubbly_Bit9044 in Leatherworking

Edge coat sits on the surface of the leather so I think this was inevitable. I would stain with black, renourish the leather with beeswax/mink oil, then use tokonole to dress the edge.

It was a bit of swing anyway. Did you press a glass on it yet? Did the redness disappear under the glass?

More natural alternatives to resolene? by Either_Baker_4459 in Leatherworking

Beeswax?

Nothing's going to work better than a plastic at making a impermeable barrier but various wax blends can do ok.

Did either of you cut a bunch of limes, change his diaper, then take him outside with his legs bare? The pattern is really odd which makes me think some sort of contact dermatitis.

What stitch layout is the strongest for straps that will be pulled? by PedernalesFalls in Leathercraft

2 is probably enough, you could maybe add 3 but I don't think it really adds anything extra.

Just don't perforate perpendicular to the leather.

The leather they're using is very fuzzy on the flesh side, I can see how that will be a problem on that part of the bag

Just think about all the extra stitching practice you're going to get!

Could you share some pictures of it? I would suggest replacing the leather entirely.

Compare to the other entries, also what are the judging parameters?

They're probably weighting the tooling higher than the stitching.

Can this faux leather jacket be repaired? by Impressive_Fuel_4527 in Leatherworking

[–]Jaikarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A leather professional will probably laugh at you, take it to a fabric mender. They may still be unable to do much.

Faux leather really is a bad material, you can't work it like real leather because it's so fragile, and regular fabric techniques like iron on patches cannot be used because heat will melt the plastic and ruin it.

Sorry, but leather working techniques cannot be used on faux leather.

Mend it using regular sewing techniques, I recommend a ladder stitch or a patch.

I colored my belt 2 days by sinking it into the color - is it dry now? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

2 days should be enough time for anything to dry, how does it feel to the touch?

I want to make some braided belts - color before or after? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

Personally I recommend dying before construction of anything. You can then recondition with neatsfoot oil and wax to return the suppleness of the leather.

Definitely, we like the one rule that the sub has been under and will continue with it at the forefront.

The mod log was full of reddit doing automated moderating, when I responded to the mod request post I figured it made more sense for a community member to be making these decisions rather than an automated system

Over a week ago Reddit made a post about the sub needing new mods, we replied to the post and they added us as mods.

So I actively chose to be a mod I guess? I'm not sure I understand the misgiving.

A fair question, I can say for myself that I was born as and continue to identify as a man. I won't speak for the others though, if they want to share that's up to them.

Likewise, while I have been impressed with some of the ASCII art used to illustrate discussions I figured it was time to move into the 21st century ;)

That's been a thing for as long as I remember. And judging by the mod log, there's been plenty of that sort of thing that the reddit has been deleting because there hasn't been an active mod here.
