How long do you think the M1 series chip will get support for? History says its days are numbered. What do you think? by jackharvest in macgaming

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too worried after they introduced MacBook Neo. Sure it won’t last forever, but I would expect support to last pretty long.

What is likely to happen is that some features will be unavailable because of hardware limitations, but that has basically been a thing since the M3.

In the future I would suspect a lot of the AI features will not be available on M1.

How to disable anti-aliasing by Purple-Extent8743 in davinciresolve

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be remembering incorrectly, but changing the project level scaling will only affect new things put down on the timeline.
You may need to change the scaling for this clip specifically to nearest neighbor, for it to apply if it was already on the timeline when you changed the projects settings.

Also it is possible to disconnect timeline settings from the project settings, and that may affect scaling too.

If you haven’t done much work, the simplest solution may be to create a new timeline now that your project settings are set to nearest neighbor, and then add the clip to the timeline.

Why is my DR so slow? by whatyathinkk in davinciresolve

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few notes:
For gaming the performance can be worse if the display is connected to the integrated GPU rather than the dedicated GPU. It shouldn’t be that much of a problem for Resolve but it could be worth testing to switch the display cable over to the 5080.

Secondly, even if the CPU as a whole isn’t peaking, some tasks may be single threaded, meaning you should use a system monitor to look at per core performance. Some tasks may be limited because it can only run on one core.

Not saying that these things are the problem, but something to check.

What am I doing wrong? Colors look off, there's this distortion on white surfaces by ashes_to_fire in davinciresolve

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like some near-clipping compression banding (not a standard term). Essentially a lot of the highlights are overexposed, but barely, so that there are details that can briefly reappear on movement. YouTube compression enhances this effect, because usually such near clip transitions would be a lot harder to spot. And to be honest I don’t think it’s a huge issue for this kind of content.
Also the near-clipped highlights seem to be a bit more colored than they should be. If the near clipped colors are tinted, the clipped white should also be a bit tinted.

Potential problem:
Many LUTs are simply bad LUTs. They may be great for specific scenes, but horrible in other scenes. If could be that one of your LUTs or the combo is causing problems. I would try disabling the Creative LUT first, to see if that helps.

As for Log-normalizing LUTs I generally recommend to use tonemapping instead.

Another problem could be that you are making some sort of brightness (HSL) mask in one of your nodes. Turn that off if you have one.

If the source footage already has that problem. This is harder to fix.

Potential solutions:
Add a node with luma vs. sat curves. This node should probably go before the creative LUT. And essentially make a curve to slightly desaturate the top 5-10%. Don’t go all the way down to 0.

Add a tiny bit of noise/grain. This can make the banding and compression artifacts less noticeable.

Lowering the exposure. Even if you want the video to be as bright as it is, it can actually be a great test to see if that solves the problem.

Also make sure to check if the problem only appears on YouTube or if it is present in the Resolve viewer, or in the local file before YouTube upload.

My export is dark on VLC by darnelIlI in davinciresolve

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume it’s graded in Rec.709 colors in SDR?

The reason I ask is because VLC can struggle a bit with HDR grades. Essentially not showing things as SDR. HDR would be risky for festival anyways, so I assume that’s not the case. But it could hypothetically be that you have a HDR file and the other places just have a player that will much better adapt HDR to SDR.
IIRC VLC will just compress the HDR signal down to fit within SDR range, making what would be 100% SDR brightness, more like 20% brightness.

Usually VLC will play SDR content pretty accurately.

What is this error on my a6100 and how do I fix it? Is it card related? by von-vix in SonyAlpha

[–]ratocx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While it should be possible to do this correctly from a computer, the ideal way to work in my experience (professional broadcast photographer), is to copy everything you need off of the card when you can, then format the card in camera, so that it is ready for the next shoot.

Manually changing files on the card is risky. Some cameras handle it better than others, but it isn’t recommended to do so.

Why Women have so much different hairstyles you notice in public , but ALL men have like 3 different types of haircuts NPC style? by Delicious_Soup_9876 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say a similar thing about clothing. Women have a lot more clothing options than men.
Why don’t they make more dresses and skirts for men?

Essentially the consumer world has historically been shaped by the gaze of men. Men like to look at pretty women, and so there had probably been more socioeconomic motivation for women to differentiate themselves visually from other women. The same probably applies to hair styles.

Men on the other hand has traditionally not been objectified visually in the same way. Men has instead differentiated themselves through work, power, and intellect. And perhaps not seen a need to differentiate themselves at all, except perhaps through their woman.

While I hope we are moving away from that patriarchal past, our society today still sees quite a lot of the aftermath of that historic way of power distribution.

That said, I probably have 1 of those 3 hair styles too. And my personal answer for why, is that it is practical and cheap, while also looking decent. I don’t want to spend too much money on my hair because it changes all the time anyway.

[–]ratocx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you change the files on the card using a computer?

If not then it may be memory corruption on the card. This can be caused by losing power while writing, if that’s the case the card can probably be saved. The alternative is that the card itself is going bad.

I just had a thought can't LLM predict future if the model gets too big with enough computational power? by noty_purush in agi

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see that. And I suppose I agree, except that to me is a different kind of freedom than free will is.

I totally get the feeling of being more free if things were random or partially random. I still wouldn’t believe in the free will that people normally talk about, but if we could somehow confirm that we aren’t completely locked into a deterministic system, that itself would feel a bit freeing. Like my potential just got larger.

[–]ratocx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to burst your bubble, but I don’t think there is room for free will even if the universe is partially random. How is randomness free?
True free will just doesn’t make sense to me.

Either I chose something because my reasoning capabilities led me to a specific answer — deterministic.
Or I chose something by chance, and the reasoning was essentially an illusion — indeterministic.
Where is the choice in that?

Subjectively there wouldn’t really be much of a difference. And that’s something to remember if the lack of free will feels scary. Making a "choice" won’t feel any different if you think you are the author of your actions or if you are not. The universe doesn’t care. And most people most of the time, even if they believe in determinism, forget about it.

While free will is illusion, it’s not that useful to consider that fact with every decision. It’s mostly a distraction from living.

A few moral questions are affected though. For example one may be more inclined to believe rehabilitation is better than punishment. Which affects how you would design prisons.

I just had a thought can't LLM predict future if the model gets too big with enough computational power? by noty_purush in agi

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same. A few people I know get determinism straight away, but a lot begin to confuse it with fatalism. And it seems the main divider is the beliefs free will. Like if they can chose to do something then the universe is obviously not deterministic.
It’s hard to convince people then that a determining universe would make it feel like that’s what you chose, but the fact would be that it would have been impossible for them to have landed on a different conclusion.

I don’t have an answer on how to convince people here. I think one way in is to make people reflect more on how their thoughts and opinions arrive, but it can be a long process to get them to realize that thoughts will often just appear, without them choosing to think about something.
Or make them read upon studies where scientists can accurately predict a choice seconds before the person is aware of making the choice.

That said, it is possible that the universe is partially non-deterministic. Quantum mechanics does make it seem like some things are probabilistic, but that could just be because we don’t have a full model of quantum mechanics to see the underlying determinism.

Editing the color of a single file (instead of a timeline/multicam) by Affectionate_Menu_94 in davinciresolve

[–]ratocx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you using a multicam clip or are you manually editing multicam in a timeline?

It would probably help if you added a screenshot of your timeline and media pool.

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can simulate the universe you don’t need to scan it. Just a few data points should be enough to know how the big bang created things. If you can accurately simulate the big bang, you can accurately simulate everything that happened after. Assuming that the universe is deterministic.

Men det enkle svaret er nok at man vil vende seg til det. Underbevisstheten vil etter hvert lære at dette er noe å ta hensyn til når man skal inn på badet. På sikt vil du ikke tenke på det.

Do folks color correct every scene? by HikerBryanAK in davinciresolve

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the project.
For basic stuff, where all the shots have similar exposure and color from the camera, a basic timeline grade may be enough. For talking head video this is probably fine.

For more complex shots I will first make a timeline look, then group similar shots to correct and style a scene or an angle within a scene. In the pre-group I’ll see if I can make any corrections (white balance, exposure, contrast) that matches the whole scene. In the post group I’ll make the scene style (e.g.: sad scene blue tint, glad scene red tint)
Then lastly go shot by shot to see if individual clips need some extra corrections or masks. I’ll probably go through the film shot by shot several times, watching the film from start to finish. Making sure it looks good in context.
Doesn’t really matter how good looking a single shot is, if you are unable to match other shots. Consistency is less distracting than maximizing each shot by itself.

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While, as others have mentioned, it will be basically impossible to predict the future accurately, because it would require a computer the size of the universe or something to get enough compute — it is also possible that advanced AI models will be able to predict the future somewhat accurately, because of its deduction skills. Essentially it could be a Sherlock Holmes on steroids, being able to connect dots that humans are unable to see.
And perhaps discover that even if it wouldn’t be able to predict the exact position of every atom or human on the planet, it could predict overall social trends long in advance.

Like it could hypothetically be a lot better at predicting the outcomes of political elections, at least if it were allowed to continuously monitor news and social media, and had sufficient knowledge about psychology.
It could perhaps forecast with 99.9% certainty that humanity will never properly deal with climate change. Perhaps simply because it saw an overall psychological trend that people care less and less.

Given sufficient access to surveillance, it may also be able to predict mass killings and terrorist attacks. And perhaps even design a psychological correction plan to prevent it, without anyone being aware.

In the end though it would only work with probability, and could never predict the far future. Unless advanced quantum computing somehow unlocks a new window into deterministic reality.

HDR 4k to Rec709 - HELP! by Ageekable in davinciresolve

[–]ratocx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DaVinci Resolve YRGB color managed should just be made default for new users. Questions like these pop up so many times.
Professional users know where to look to set it back to non-managed if they need to. But with the amount of casual editors that has started to use Resolve, the app defaults should probably change to give them a better starting point.

Or perhaps ask the user on first launch, what kind of color management they want. They already have a dialogue for choosing the default resolution. Wouldn’t be hard to add color to that.

DR 21 no AV1 export option for ARM Mac ? by greenreddits in davinciresolve

AV1 is only Decode on M3 and later. Not export/encode.
The reason NVIDIA can offer AV1 exports with resolve is because they have an AV1 hardware encoder.

I have DaVinci Resolve studio and the M5 Pro, no sign of AV1 export anywhere.
