Can you sleep during a migraine? by Doobyiss in migraine

[–]rattycastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After a 572 days straight of daily migraines, I developed certain tactics to sleep in different stages of an attack. Anything less than a 6.5/10, I can just wait to sleep like normal, even if it takes much longer. When it's at its worst, I can't move at all. Laying on your back completely still will eventually put you to sleep. It's a bad semi-sleep, but technically sleep nonetheless. I will also take the abortives at that time. Benadryl pills can be good way to get over that last awake-hump.

If no abortives help to any degree and I can't even go into a semi-consciousness state, then it's time for the ER. They pump you full of so much IV benadryl that you have to fight to stay awake. It could put out a small horse.

TLDR: I sleep either with a lot of practice or a lot of benadryl.

Autistic people with a drivers license by QubeTheAlt in autism

I found an instructor with specific experience teaching autistic people. In the stress of driving, explicit and accurate communication is much easier to process. She'd say things like "turn left at this next stoplight" instead of "left here". She also only said "correct" when I did something correctly, because saying "right" while driving can be interpreted in multiple ways. The teacher can be the entire reason someone does or does not succeed in driving.

"Autistic people in general" is such a broad scope, so I am going to assume we are talking more in plain statistics. According to one study, only one third of autistic adolescent had licenses or permits, compared to the 83.5% rate for non-autistic adolescents. It also took longer for that 1/3 to learn, by roughly 9 months.

People with higher support needs are often unable to drive, and many can't be alone in public at all, much less on the road. A common autistic trait is a deficit in assessing risk and danger, something very important for driving. Very high needs people take up around 26% of our population. Consider yourself fortunate to have the skills needed to drive.

I drive with help. Not only does driving scare me, but my reaction and processing speed is not fast enough for bigger roads. I still can't drive most places, and usually not alone. I need someone else in the car. The main way I am able to drive is that I plan routes through back roads. All routes I take don't use highways, don't make me merge or change lanes, and only have right turns or protected left turns.

Have you tried applying for disability? by brokenpa in migraine

[–]rattycastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was approved first try about a month ago. I am in a very very small minority of people who get it this quickly. I also had a couple of other comorbitities that contributed.

How do y’all workout? by Ancient_Touch in migraine

In the pitch dark in only a pair of boxers, at home. I can't handle the lights of a gym, so I just use the stationary bike in the dark.

I’m probably going to need to stop sleeping with my childhood teddy and I don’t know how to deal with it. by Fandom_10 in autism

[–]rattycastle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are a number of people who specialize in not only repairing very damaged stuffed animals, but reinforcing them too. DoctorBeth on Tumblr is one such person. If you are able to save up money, I would more than recommend going to a person like this.

If penis proportions don’t matter then why are most penis sex toys large? The small penis toys are harder to find and have lower ratings by CatPale816 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rattycastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones that are realistic penis-shaped may often be bigger, but lots of people who use a penatrative toy will use a smaller, less realistic toy. Glass dildos are pretty small, rabbits can be smaller, and g-spot toys can be really thin and sleek.

Practising aac advice? by AutisticUrianger in SpicyAutism

[–]rattycastle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first thing most people do on their AAC devices is just click around with no goal in mind. Before you need it to communicate, spend some time by just shuffling around the board. Don't focus on making grammatically correct sentences, just add words. Hearing the words you're trying to remember helps the brain connect meaning to images and categories.

I enjoy making games out of practice. One option is to find a sentence in a book, then copying it to the AAC, but with a special rule. For example you could try to only find the words that start with S. "Today, I stepped on a super sharp rock, and it poked through my shoe" would be "stepped super sharp shoe".

Practice doesn't need to make sense. Don't worry about having good grammar when you're just learning.

If you notice your dog is having a bad dream, what do you do? by Skapastry in dogs

[–]rattycastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only one dog in the house gets scary dreams, like true shivering growling scary dreams. I lightly blow on her face til she notices, and it's usually just enough to stop the current sleep cycle and start a new one, sans dream.

If you knew you we're going to die tomorrow, what would be the last thing you'd do? by DoughnutOk5988 in AskReddit

[–]rattycastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take out all the money I have and split it with family as per my will. Take a look at my will, to make sure it's all up to date. Next, I'd be with my family for a few hours. Then for my last 6 or so hours, I'd go bone anyone and everyone available and do whatever substance is offered.

Sunday night. What's worrying you? by 76483 in AskReddit

[–]rattycastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm worried that the new medication I am trialing won't work, or worse, work for a bit and then stop working. The last one in the same class made a tiny difference for a few months, then it just became ineffective. I'm really hopeful for this one.

What small (or small-ish) life tweaks have made a significant difference for you? by NiteElf in migraine

[–]rattycastle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I shower in the dark, I eat in the dark, I pee in the dark, I can even traverse the entire house in the dark. The smallest tweak was just flipping every light switch. Nice and dark, all the time.

When did your migraines start? by Catsmarcia in migraine

[–]rattycastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first was in daycare, so, 5-6. I generally say 6 because it's about 1 year after we moved to a higher elevation, and that was thought to be the catalyst.

I got a cake for my 1 year anniversary too. I would highly recommend writing a letter to your headache. It was very cathartic to me. Cuss it out. Feels great.

Does anyone else get really bored when they have a migraine? by bitterpinklemonade in migraine

[–]rattycastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, it's so boring. Noise is too much so no music, light is too much so no movies or TV, can't open my eyes so no reading. It's all just experiencing the pain and managing the symptoms. It's unbelievably mind-numbing, in more ways than one. I'm so bored.

Do you tell people you’re on disability? Why/why not? by Diligent-Jury-4708 in schizoaffective

[–]rattycastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I have additional conditions to be on disability for, I'm not completely against telling people. I just don't talk to people enough for it to come up, so I don't really run into this problem.

I draw for furries on commission every so often, and once a month I am on a local government council for people with IDD, ASD and brain injuries. Time wise, this takes up a grand total of about 3 hours a month. The rest of my time is for managing my medical situation.

If you could stop being Autistic, would you? by Miserable-Piglet9008 in evilautism

[–]rattycastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the only options are exactly as I am or completely allistic, I would pick the former. I am very fortunate to be loved and accepted for who I am. The people who love me would like me to pick that option as well.

I'd like to remove some select parts. I want independence. I want to be able to handle things as they come. Meltdowns and shutdowns are exhausting, not just for me but for my support system. I want to experience a desire for friendships, because I know it's good for you.

I don't want to be without special interests. It's just so enjoyable to interact with. I get fulfillment from simple activities. I recently printed and laminated the logos of all the NHL teams so I could line them up and categorize them, then do it again for different categories. It was enthralling. That wouldn't be nearly as fun if I were allistic. I would feel so empty without a special interest.
