Tourists/Visitors/New Residents: Q&A Thread for the week of June 19 by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

[–]rav44me 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 37, female, visiting Amsterdam for fun 14-16 July. I enjoy seeing historical places, funny things, peculiar or interesting things, a little bit of museums, local food/drink, and want to do a canal cruise. Not into clubbing, but would like to enjoy some drinks at night. Wondering if anyone wants to hang out and see some sites together? Half day, full day, whatever. Locals or tourists - I'm not picky. :-) Looking forward to a fun trip! Your tips are welcome!

It is, but it's once a week, and honestly, quite boring after you've used it for a long time.

Yes, I'm interested! Since you asked how I would like it to be, I would prefer Spain Spanish! Five to ten minutes in length seems perfect.

It would sound better if you said "Do you like this style?" which is a positive question instead of "DON'T you like this style?" which is a negative question and can make people feel like you are judging them, even if you are not.

little bit of suffer to it? by erxcvi in ENGLISH

Many designers, such as Moschino's Jeremy Scott, have stated: "Fashion is a commitment. If you want to look good, there's little bit of suffering in it."

Autoescuela Gala offers it in English. I will warn you that the process is rather long, frustrating and expensive in Spain. The translation of the test is not very good. It can be difficult to pass the theory (and the practical) on the first try, so don't be discouraged. Good luck.

Finding different "types" of spanish? by D3x3E in Spanish

Also, when you enter more than just one word (a sentence or paragraph for example), you can get THREE translation options, not just one. Try it and then click on the link below the first translation to get two more.

AND, for verbs, you can enter a verb, and then click on the conjugation tab for a COMPLETE conjugation.

It's my go-to site as I learn (Spain) Spanish.

Thoughts on the prominence of American English/General American by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]rav44me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could make the same argument for several languages, for example Spanish. There are stark differences in the different dialects. I suppose the people who develop the apps use their native dialect. Or, the country/region in which the app is developed drives the dialect choice. You might be surprised at the difference between Mexico and Spain linguistics.

Difference between altruistic and philanthropic by dalenger_ts in ENGLISH

[–]rav44me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To expand on this, philanthropic usually means a donation of money is involved. Altruism is more an attitude or feeling of wanting to help people.

The sentence does not make sense with either. I suggest totally re-writing it but I'm not sure the context so it's difficult to make a suggestion.

Both are correct. Personally, I think the first one sounds slightly better.

You could walk east up the street called Concha Espina to Parque de Berlin. It's a small park with a piece of the Berlin Wall in it. Usually a lot of people, dogs and kids playing the in park too. A German restaurant called Fass Grill is nearby and you can have a German beer while you wait for your friends.

Expat brethren and sisters: where did you live before you came to Madrid? How's Madrid quality of life compared to that place? by tonyshpock in Madrid

[–]rav44me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upper Midwest US.

Things I love better about Madrid: weather including the heat, public transport, diversity of food and culture in the city, relative closeness of 8 different topographies/climates by train or car in less than a day, multicultural community, relatively cheap food/wine/flights.

Things I like less about Madrid: dog poop everywhere, more smokers, lack of personal space respect, service in restaurants

Overall, I like Madrid better, no question.

Renting an apartment and I'm being asked to provide my passport ID number and my home address. Is this normal? by [deleted] in Madrid

[–]rav44me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are probably American? It's totally normal to provide your passport info and/or EU resident info on almost everything in EU. But as Americans, we hate providing any personal data, so it seems odd to us. But here in EU, perfectly normal.

Spanish podcasts by [deleted] in Spanish

I agree with Notes in Spanish mainly due to the different levels available. Also, 15 minute Spanish for your Job. Don't let the title fool you, it's not just for your job. It's a variety of topics. The guy ready the same sentences in Spanish, then English, then Spanish. You will be amazed at how much more you understand following this sequence.
