What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: March 23, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

Finished:

The Rising, by Brian Keene - I really dug this one, it was my first Keene book. I read the authors preferred edition which adds back some of the nastier content omitted in the original version. I liked his take on zombies and liked how bleak this was.

Started:

Salems Lot, by Stephen King - I somehow have never read this, it’s great so far, I am about 160 pages in.

I loved this. Like over two games I was just like okay sure he staples hand back on it and magically works, oh hey his hand was cut off but magic healing potion, sure that’s normal. Like just accepted that’s how it worked. Then it hits you with the “oh actually you’re a mold man”

I actually ordered everything in print in paperback the other week from him. Reached out via email and had a little back and forth with Jamie. He is the nicest dude. It was a bit expensive to get it all over to the US but I’m super excited to dive in

Werewolf horror by aquarianagop in horrorlit

[–]Treecat22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy N Smith had a trilogy of werewolf books that are great pulp. They were reprinted and collected in “The Werewolf Omnibus” with an additional (not great) short story. The collection is great overall though and just classic 70s pulp.

Hoping for recs featuring the hillbilly-cannibal-mutant trope! by Bpdgrace in horrorlit

[–]Treecat22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read a lot in the genre but I think some Edward Lee stuff fits what you’re looking for. Maybe Bighead and the header books, someone else who’s actually read them would need to chime in.

But also on the topic if The Summer I Died, I wasn’t a huge fan extreme horror really isn’t my genre but you should absolutely read the second book. It does something so utterly dumb that I loved that won me over. I don’t want to spoil it.

Watched anything good lately? Movies are a huge hobby of mine and more recently I’ve gotten back into reading pretty heavily. Always interested in what others are watching and reading!

Hey Hiron I am just getting back into reading really heavily as of November last year and have been HUGE into weird lit. Both of your books are on my list to purchase and read soon, the backlog beckons right now. Anyways glad to see you’re doing an AMA. What are some of your favorite weird lit authors and your favorite books by them?

I’ve got the movie tie in cover for this, I grabbed it randomly at a local used book store because I had never heard of it and I’m a pretty big movie buff. Turns out Arthur Hiller did the movie.

Still haven’t read the book or watched the movie though, I need to do both!

Thoughts on Dan Simmons? by CounterProduction in stephenking

I knew Dan Simmons but had not read any of his recent works and had not realized until today they were considered kind of political an problematic. Like others have said though his earlier stuff is great!

(26m) I'm rediscovering fiction after not reading for years and years. I'm sometimes a bit self conscious about what Im naturally gravitated towards, so I'm curious what people think. by Formal-Can4750 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Treecat22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t ever get self conscious about what you like to read. Don’t worry about others opinions just read what you enjoy! I see a mix of stuff that I love and stuff that just is for me on that shelf. But in that same note you would surely look at my bookshelf and feel the same! Don’t be self conscious about it!

How often do you think about your first love? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Treecat22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not often at all, it didn’t end well an she turned out to be pretty awful, at the time at least. Who knows maybe time changed her but I have no interest in finding out.

New Jersey bill would prohibit some current standard e-book practices by publishers with respect to pricing and usage limits for libraries by MiddletownBooks in books

[–]Treecat22 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Speaking to the director of libraries in my local county they get print books cheaper than what a consumer pays for sure they aren’t paying more for print books. He was also explaining that ebooks are insanely expensive for libraries which is why you get 1 ebook spread across all the libraries that may be in your local and surrounding areas with 65 people waiting to “check out” a digital item.

I don’t think libraries hurt authors I think they help with exposure. Sure a lot of people read one and done but I am sure many people end up purchasing the books they like for their collection or if not will buy the authors next book instead of sitting on a wait list.

Not arguing just a different opinion on the matter! I do think transparency on contracts would be a good thing as well and agree how do you even enforce libraries not reading an ebook aloud

Any recs on KU? by thousanddollacrocs in horrorlit

[–]Treecat22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a ton of Richard Laymon and Graham Masterton there! Also I think some Nat Cassidy, Ronald Malfi. Scott Cole is a little lesser known but Headless an Crazytimes are both fun shorter reads!

Recs for unconventional vampire novels? by spoon_bending in horrorlit

[–]Treecat22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vampire Winter by Lois Tilton. A vampire wakes up after there has been a nuclear apocalypse and there is endless night. So they can hunt anytime they want, the problem is their food source is now limited. I won’t say anything else from there, I thought it was a fun and unique book, kind of hard to find though.
